The visitors reached the city at 11 o'clock this morning from Boston and ensconced themselves at the Evbitt House. The team is in charge of McGunnigle, the manager. Mac has had lots of ex- ence in base ball, having pitched in Michigan League as far back as 1873. xed the Brooklyn leas club in , when the Bridegrooms won the pen- nant, and the Louisville fans entertain Sreat hopes that he will better their ball have a habit of leaving téf their dinners at the end of the seventh or_go were sorely disappointed, for the fup happened in each game after they weh€ alway. In the first game, with the score standing 3 to 2 against Washington ara all the prob- abilities favoring a victory for Cleveland, there came a batting stré for the locals that netted them three ruhs and the game. This rally, to use the old and well-known Phrase, was “alone wort} the price of ad- misston.”” Tuesday, after a dreary rbund of weak hitting, inning after inning, and no hope in any breast that the monoteny would be Ufted, the ninth inning ofehed with the score standing 6 to 2 in favor of Cleveland. Two fine hits were made. by Cartwright and McGulre and things like at least a tie, and perhaps a victoYy, again snatched from the very jaws of defeat. But the spurt did not last quite long enough, and the game went to the visitors, 6 to 4. Yet the rally at the bat was in ‘itself a great relief and it showed that the game is never lost with the present Washington team vntil the last man is out. This trait was shown well enough in yes- terday’s game, when, with.two out in the ninth and everything favoring a shut-out for the home team, Joyce pounded the ball for two bases and tied the score, and in the following inning McGuire hit to the score board for three sacks, and scored in a moment on a sacrifice. Had it not been for Burkett’s beautiful nomer to the fenc the game would have been won; but that hit added to the intense interest, and it is questionable if ever before was a game played here that was so full of excitement and so close. s In the first game Washington made 5 runs, 10 hits and 2 errors, to 3 runs, :) hits and 1 error by Cleveland. In the ‘second game Washington made 4 runs, 5 hits and 1 error, and Cleveland 6 runs, 10 hits and 2 errors. Yesterday Washington made 3 runs, 8 hits and 2 errors, and Cleveland 3 runs, 9 hits and 2 errors. ‘The total for the series was: Washington, 12 runs, 23 hits and 5 errors; Cleveland, 12 runs, 28 hits and 5. errors. If there is a series on record In the history of the league with such close results, es- pecially in view of the finishing inning of the different games, the memory of local base ball “fans” 13 sadly at fault. Colonels Were Outplayed. Timely hitting, augmented by good field- ing and base running, won the game for Boston from Louisville. The Colonels were unahle to bat Nichols when hits were need- ed. After McDermott had been touched up for seven hits in the fourth he was taken out and Hill substituted. day by his great three-bagyer to right, and Tuesday he opened the ninth inning with a double, and it was rot his fault that the experience of Monday was not repeated. But It cannot be disputed that when men are on bases, he 1s very apt to pop up a fly. He 1s now just where he most frequently has chances to advance or score runners by hitting. Rogers is developing into a surer batter than the big man who guards first bag, and DeMontreville doubtless has a better hitting record for the season. Either man would do better at team batting than Cart- wright has of late. It ought to be mentioned, too, that in this connection there is a good deal of talk to the effect that Cartwright ought to be laid off the team for a few games, to iry a new combination. The fans who talk this way are of the opinion that Cartwright isn’t a very strong man on the initial bag. These people do not stop to think, however, as Possibly Capt. Joyce does, that the first basemen who shine on other teams have easy positions to fill and would not be in it with Cartwright if they were playing with the Washingtons. The explanation is easy. Other first basemen have seasoned infielders to celiver the ball to them, and nine times out of ten the ball comes to them just right. The situation with Washington is just reversed, and it is the exception when a bali is well thrown to Cartwright, particularly in a tight place. He gets the nastiest balls thrown to any first baseman in the league, and has saved many, many errors to the inflelders by the masterly way in which he Scoops them up. Joyce, although seasoned, 1s not a good thrower. Rogers and De Montreville are both quick and active, and are swift throwers, but they are often in- accurate. Knowing Cartwright’s ability to catch short bounds they avoid the danger of throwing into the stand by sending them in low. The result is that Cartwright sel- dom receives a thrown ball above the knee, and often he gets nasty long-short bound- ers—the hardest kind of ball to catch—such as thet thrown by Rogers in the tenth in- ning yesterday, which retired the side, and saved the game. This ts what some people who have cicse- ly watched the games this season think, end probably Mr. Wagner aad his enter- prising captain-manager think the same way. Shifting Cartwright’s position in the batting list might be an advantage, with- out in the slightest degree cli upon the big first baseman as all-round player.
