24 THE EVENING STAR, SATURDAY, MAY 23,.1896-TWENTY-FOUR PAGES. IN MUSICAL CIRCLES] W. M. Paul is the New President of the Choral Society. Prof. Josef Kaspar to Again Wield the Baton—Other Matters of Local Interest. The result of the election of officers of the Choral Soctety indicates that next season the organization, which is the most im- portant voeal corps in the District, will commence its work under the most favor- atle auspices. Mr. Paul, who has been chesen president, is one of the oldest active n.embers of the society, and has shown his devotion to its interests in many ways. During the past season Mr. Paul was par- ticularly active, and was instrumental in greatly reducing the debt of the society. He is thoroughly devoted to music, being precentor at the New York Avenue Pres- byterian Church, and, with his large circle of acquaintances, will undoubtedly prove of great benefit to the society. The other cfficers were re-elected, and they have become efficient in their respective positions. Two of them are entitled to espe- cial notice—Miss A. C. Leavitt and Mr. Meade. Miss Leavitt has been the finan- secretary for so many years that there is never a thought of any one else at the receipt of customs. Ske has transacted all her business so systematically and satis- factorily as to prove her a capable business Woman, as well as a good musician. Mr. Meade has handied the funds of the society in a thoroughly efficient manner, and has conducted his affairs so qutetly and unos- tentatiously, but so effectively, as to have gained the complete confidence of not only the board, but the entire society. Prof. Kaspar returns to the conduct of the society musically, after a year’s rest, and he will enter upon his duties In the fall with renewed vigor. Dr. Sherman's ability as a conducter is well recognized, and the so- ¢iety feels under obligations to him for the manner in which he took hold of the batoy when Prof. Kaspar was obliged to lay it down cn account of bis heaith, and wielded it so successfully during the last season. He tg practically the dean of the conductors of this society, having been the first to direct its music, and continued to do so for many years.
