The Madrids’ Benefit—As thoroughly artistic as could be desired was the benefit entertainment tendered the Madrid Mando- lin Quartet last evening at Metzerott Hall, end the popularity of the members, Messrs. McCormick of Kentucky on the subject of “A Re- united Country” promises to be an un- usually interesting and enjoyable occasion. Mr. McCormick. will be introduced by Mr. Justice Harlan, who is one of the patrons of the lecture, the list including the names of those who are highest in civil and mili- tary life at the national capital. Mr. Me- Cormick possesses all the gifts of a south- ern orator and is a true son of Kentucky, the land of silver-tongued speakers. His subject is always an interesting one and a large audience will undoubtedly welcome him this evening. Miss Starkey’s May Ball.The annual May ball given by the pupils of Mi Blanche Starkey will take place this even- ing at National Rifles’ Armory. Miss Starkey's class of fancy dancers have al- Ways sustained an excellent reputation for geod work, and the event this year will be much more complete in every detail than ar event in the past. A Split at the Annual Meeting—Officers Elected. The annual meeting of the Dmancipation Celebration and HistoricalAssoclation of the District of Columbia was held last night at G09 F street northwest, and quite an excit- ing time resulted. The purpose of the gath- ering was to elect officers for the ensuing year, tnd the meeting was organized by the selection of Alexander Hawkins as tem- porary chairman in the absence of Robert Holliday, the president. Mr. Holliday and scme of his friends arrived later, and the former protested against holding the elec- tion when so few members were present. His protest was unheeded, however, and the Holliday faction withdrew. Those who remained elected George W. Stewart, presi- dent; Lewis Willis, vice president; J. W Coles, secretary; William Prather, assis' ant seerstary; James W. Wood, treasure Alexander Hawkins, chaplain; Tilman Dor- sey, sergeant-at-arms; F. W.
