There was a lively scrap last evening in “Boston,” in which Orlando Harris, color- ed, aged thirty-one, was the chief actor, and Harvey Clark, a one-legged negro, who hobbies around on a crutch, was the vio- tim. Harris became infuriated at the crippl and came near ending his life. He hit and kicked the poor unfortunate, and not doing enough visible injury by these means, he grabbed the crutch, the victim’s only sup- port, and began clubbing the man on the head. Clark was terribly battered up, and his head and face gashed in a number of different places. Policemen Harrison and Maher were attracted to the scene, and they captured Harris, locking Lim up on a charge of assault and battery. Commitices Appointed. A space ten feet square, thoroughly prepared and well cultivated, will produce as many tomatoes or onions as an average family can consume during the season. T am surprised that those directing the operations of the lot farmers have not, seemingly, thought of planting sweet potas tove, for it Is now quite late to plant Irish potatoes. They should have been in thé ground two wecks ago. It is true that the soil in this city is not well adapted to the growth of sweet potatces, but if thoroughly Well prepared, ploughed and harrowed two or three times and well manured, they will pay as well and probably better than Irish potatoes planted out of season. As to the kind of fertilizer, I have always preferred barnyard manure, and during the tweniy- four years that I have grown potatoes in this District I have never seen the effect upen them, seab produced by the use ¢f stable manure, as reported through The Star of “Monda Let the good work go on, but under the supervision of those who understand prac- tically how to prepare the ground, how to plant and how to cultivate. On page 4% of “The Personal Memoirs of Gen. Grant,” vol. 2, will be found a fao simile of the terms of surrender in Gen. Grant's own hand. On page 491, same volume, Gen. Grant says that he wrote them, and on page 482 saya: “When 1 put my pen to the paper I did not know the first word that I should make use of in writing the terms. I only knew what was in my mind, and 1 wished to express It clearly, so that there could be no mistaking It.” The original shows three places where changes were made in the language by Col.
