CONFEDERATE BATTLE ASSEY Movement to Locate the Proposed Me- morial in Washivgton, The Cost to Be $750,000, of Which $200,000 Has Been Raised—Attend- ance at Richmond, The regular meeting of the Confederate Veterans Thursday evening was-one of the most largely attended for some time, in addition to other matters of !mpo! steps were tzken for the appointment cf a committee to work up an interest toward securing the erection of the contemplated Battle Abbey of the South in Washington. It is the desire of the association in form- ing the committee to secure gentlemen from among well-krown citizens of the District who are not members, as well as from its own membership. The proposed memorial temple, battle abbey, or whatever it may be officially christened, will be on a colossal scale, and will all probability involve an expenditure of $750,000 or more. It is the earnest wish of the Contederate Veterans’ Association to secure its location here, not only as a southern memorial building, but as one of national importance, and an especially attractive and ornamental fea- ture to the city. The work of promoting the endeavor will be ably assisted by the Ladies’ Relief Society. Steps are being take organize a committee of fifty, embracing memb2rs of the two associations and a number of prominent ladies and gentlemen outside of the associations. A committee, composed of one member from each state and one from the District of Columbia, was appoirted at the last grand encampment of the United Veterans to decide pon the location of the memoria! building, and this committee will do so at the coming annual encampment, to be held in Richmond in June next. The committee of promotion here, to be formed thr: ugh the movement inaugurated at the Taursday night meeting, will solicit subscriptions, to be devoted toward the erection of the build- ing if located in Washington. The general fund, collected through the southern camps, to which the association of this city has made a coitribution of several hundred dol- lars, amounts already, it is said, to over $200,000, which in itself \;ould insure a very handsome edifice. Plans will be completed at once for pushing the work of the com- mittee in this city. Arrangements in regard to delegates to the annual encampment at Richmond were taken up Thursday ing, and it was de- cided that the associat! shguld, as far as possibie, attend in a bi iit was also ds- cided that the only distinguishing feature in the way of uniform snould be a soft hat, light in color and similar in shape to that worn by the militia. Headquarters will be selected today for the wrk @f the memorial hall committee. Gesture TREASURY MESSENGER ‘PALLS DEAD —. James M. Houseman -Stricken With Heart Disense Thia Afternoon. James M. Houseman; an! elderly white man, who was employed a&’ a messenger in the office of the solfeitor‘of the treas- ury, died suddenly 2 li tle before 1 o'clock this afternoon in the!’ treaSury building. He was sitting in the Watehthan's chair at the east basement door,“where express mat- ter is received. Sudadfly, And without a word, he fell forward. He was dead be- fore anything could be done for him. The sad occurrence created a consideranle excitement about the corridors at the time. Houseman was well known and greatly liked among the employes of the depart- ment. The coroner's office was immediately rotified, and Deputy Coroner Glazebrook was on hand in a few minutes. He made an examination of the body, which lay in an adjoining room, and decided that heart disease was the catse of death. ° Mr. Houseman lived at’ 1242 12th street. The police have been engaged all the week in making an investigation of the incendiary fire at the house of “Nina” Du- |} mas, in the “Division,” carly Monday morn- | ing. Early last evening “Nina” Dumas | was arrested by Precinct Detective Sutton | of the first precinct and locked up. Sus-| picion was the charge against her. The officer suspected that she had set fire to! 4 her house or had employed some other per- son to do it for her. It was about 4 o'clock in the morning when the fire occurred. The proprietress of the house was supposed to have been in New York since the previous Thursday. Te There was no one in the house when the fire was discovered. The firemen succeeded in checking the flames in time to discove' evidence of their incendiary origin. Kere: oil had been poured through the house on the carpets, bedding and furniture, while a large packing box filled with wearing ap- parel had been saturated and left on a bed Two new oil cans were found in the house. A colored woman who had been employ- | ed as a domestic by the woman was lo ed up, but the next day she was release. d. | as the circumstances did not indicate thai she had been used as a tool to destroy the house and contents, Nina Dumas is twenty-nine years old, and is a native of France. She occupied the house, No. 1430 C street, only a few months, and the detective says paid $115 a month for it. The woman now under arrest says that she went to New York Thursda: y, but the detective has fcund two men who claim that they saw her here Saturday. She re turned the day after the fire. During these few days, according to the detective’s in- formatior:, she sent to Dave Tayenner three telegrams and a letter, but just what she had to say in them the detective does not know. Tavenner, who is an unmarried man, lives on I street, and is a clerk in a furniture store. He was summoned to the police sta. tion this morning, and detained there wile the officer was continuing his investigation. It turned cut that the woman had the contents of the house insured in the North- Western Company fer $2,500, and has put in a claim for the insurance. In getting the insurence policy, it is alleged, she swore she owned the furniture and a piano, when it is charged she had not paid for the furniture, and had only reuted the piano, Detective Sut tton says he thinks the men who cla'm to have seen the woman kere Saturday are mistaken. He thinks she was in New York, and should he fail to fix the incendiarism on her he thinks the insurance company will Prosecute her on a charge of making a false claim. In making this insurance statement, it is charged, she was assisted by the ¢ 5 Tavenner. Although he was detained at the station today for some time, he was not under arrest. —— Papers Excluded From Turkey.
