West before the Baptist Young People’s Union, which have been going on all this week, have been largely attended. The pastor has spoken chiefly of the duties of the young people. Last night the meetings closed, and despite the bad weather, there was a good attend- ance. Rev. Mr. West feels confident that much good will result to the young peopie of his congregation. The Dickens Club will not meet tonight, @s was expected, but will meet next Satur- Gay at the residence of Mrs. Juan Lewis. Mr. J. Yznaga has broken ground for a beautiful residence on Lansing street. The contract for building the house has been given to Messrs. John T. Hare and Lewis Byrnes. The W. C. T. U. of Brookland had a Pleasant meeting Thursday afternoon at the residence of Mrs. R. R. West. The fact that some new members have been added recently to the tnion has greatly encour- aged the promoters. Dr. and Mrs. H. J. Penrod have decided to remain in the'r house on Lith street ‘until April, when they will take possession of thelr new home, on the Bunker Hill Yoad. Gaithersburg Lodge of Good Templars at the weekly meeting last night initiated Mrs. F. V. D. Rayfield. Prof. V. D. Neat week a meeting is to take place at St. Paul's English Lutheran Church for the purpose of forming a Young People’s Lutheran Union. While this is partly the result of the recent mass meeting, it wiil not be in any sense a Lutheran Christian Endeavor Union. There will be some societies in the organization which have no connection whatever with the En- Geavor movement. There are to be three delegates present from each young people’s scciety, one of whom is expected to be the pastor of the church with which the society is connected, and it is thought that the fol- lcwing churches will be represented: Luther Memorial, St.Paul’s, Reformation, Zion's, St. Mark's, West Washinston, Keller Memorial, Our Redeemer and Concordia. A constit tion has been drafted and will be submitted for adoption, which provides for a presi- dent, first and second vice presidents, sec- retary, treasurer and executive committe Rev. Dr. I. W. Canter, pastor of Mt. Vi non Church, and in charge of the mission of the church in Georgetown, has organized the mission for regular work. J. W. Hum- mer has been seiected as the superintendent of the Sunday school recently organized and a preaching service for Sabbath, be- sides those services now held, is to be ar- ranged. Bishop John P. Newman addressed the Method'st Ministers’ Association Monday morning on his experiences during his recent trip. The bishop also touched on the que: tions of church polity now being asitate: but did not seem to be in favor of taking radical steps toward changing the form of government under which the church has grown to such proporticns. Rev. George N. Luceock, D.D., pastor of the Metropclitan Presbyterian Church, has just returned from a trip to Ohio. While away the doctor assisted in conducting a series of special services. His pulpit was filled last Sunday by Rev. Adolos Allen. A Bible Club has been organized at the First Congregational Church. A prepara- tory lecture was given Thursday evening, and it is expected that the club will do away with the necessity of a Sunday School Teachers’ Club. The Ladies’ Ald Society of North Capitol Methodist Church gave an oyster supper Wednesday evening, the proceeds being de- yoted to the payment of the church deb Quite a neat su™m was realized. The float- ing Incumbrances have been paid, and next month a legacy will come due cf $800, so that the interest for this year is very nearly provided for. A coilection was taken up last Sunday in the local Catholic churches and throughout the archdiocese of Baltimore for negro and Indian missions in the United States. A circular letter has been widely distributed in the interest of this work and signed by Archbishops Ryan of Philadelphia and Kain of St. Louis, asking that more attention be paid to this feature of church work. A meeting will soon be held to elect a successor to President William B, Mathews of the District Epworth League, who re- signed last week. It will not be necessary to call the whole league together, as the constitution provides for such elections by the board of control, and accordingly that body will be called together inside the next two weeks for this purpose. Several names have been suggested in this connection, among them is that of Rev. Hedding B. Leech, now superintendent of the fourth general conference District Junior League. Rey. Isaac W. Canter is holding revi services at Mt. Vernon M. E. Church, as- sisted by the revivalist, Key. J. E. School- fleld. At the beginning of the present month the Junior Christian Endeavor Society of the Mt. Pleasant Congregational Church was three years old. The society now num- bers 100 members. During the past year the society has raised $10) for the church building fund, and $117 for the coming con- vention. Word has been received in the city of the death this week of Rev. Dr. James R. Hub- ard, a former rector of the Church of the Incarnation. Dr. Hubard at the time of his death was rector of St. James’ Church, Berkeley, Va. A “hatchet party” was recently given at the residence of Mrs. Robert Bowdler, one of the members of the Keller Memorial Lutheran congregation, for the benciit of the church. Prizes were given to the ones who came nearest to pinning the hatchets to the cut in the representation of a tree. At the close of this portion of the pro- gram refreshments were sold. For the past two years the congregation has been making anearnest effort to wipe out the debt on the edifice, and 1s now nearer its aim than ever. Rev. D. E. Wiseman,pastor of the Church of Our Redeemer, has returned from New York city, where he was called by the sickness of his brother's wife, which proved fatal. During his absence the pulpit was filled by one of the students of Howard University. The American University has come into possession of an old Hebrew Bible, publish- ed in the city of Cologne about four hun- dred years ago. It is a bequest from the late Rev. W. H. Laney, a former pastor cf Fletcher M. E. Church of Washingiun, and will make an acceptable addition to the al- ready good-sized collection on theological subjects which the university possesses. Arrangements are nearly completed for the opening of the library and reading room of Calvary Baptist Church. One thousand new books have recently been purchased by a committee, and with those which the church already had will make a total collection of about 2,200 volumes, in- cluding works of fiction and the standard authors, with an especially large number of commentaries. The library room on the right of the entrance to the SunJay school house has been complelely refurnished. Additional shelves have been put in, and a number of long tables, desks and chairs have been purchased. It is also expected that a number of magazines and periodicals will be obtained,as well as the daily papers. At the fourth quarterly conference of Grace M. E. E. Church, under the auspices of the Women’s Foreign Missionary Society. The Mission- ary Reading Circle also had a regular meet- ing lately at the residence of Mrs. Hep- burn on Capitol Hill. They are pursuing a regular course of reading. A new society has been admitted to the Christian Endeavor Union of the Dis! t. It is the Vermont Avenue Baptist, and it makes the number of the local societies seventy-five. ‘Tomorrow the annual Sunday schol mis- sionary anniversary is to be celebrated at North Capitol Church by an appropriate program, followed by an election of officers of the society. The Ladies’ Aid Society of the Eastern Presbyterian Church is making an effort to secure four hundred subscribers to the debt fund. Each subscriber pledges him- self or herself to be one of four hundred to pay twenty-five dollars each during the coming year, but the subscription will not be binding until all the four hundred have been secured. Bristow of Calvary Baptist Sunday school is arranging to have the largest roll call day the school has ever had this coming month. Calvary has now between fourteen and fifteen hundred scholars on the rolls, nearly all of whom are regular attendants. The Dtstrict Sunday School Union is pre- paring to hold a series of institutes during the spring months. The last one was held at Tenleytown, and the next one will be on the 20th of March, in the Presbyterian Church at Takoma. At this meeting there will be present the officers and members of the Montgomery and Prince George's coun- tles associations. The meeting is called with the primary object of awakening in- terest in these counties. Five of these in- Stitutes have been held altogether.
