Martial Law Proclaimed and Impress- ment Has Begun. The flag of rebellion has once more been raised In Nicaragua, and reports show that the whole district north of Lake Man- agua, including the departments of the west and the north, are in open rebellion against President Zelaya. Martial law has been proclaimed, and the impressing of men into the army is being pushed rapidly. The president is supported by a wing of the liberal party, and 2,000 mea are already under arms. Managua, the capital, is being actively made ready for defens>, as the insurgents. whose headquarters are at Loon, the old capital of Nicaragua, end the center of the old Roman tholic pop- ulation, as opposed to the Catholics of more modern views, are expected to make an attack upon Managua. A strong detach- ment of the Leonists has already left that town, and ft is believed that Managua will be attacked tomorrow or the next day. ‘The conservative party in Managua met yesterday and resolved to give moral support to President Zelaya, and also de- termined to send e: ‘resident Cardenas and General Avil to Granada, near Lake Nicaragua, to inform their partisans there of their determination to suppo:t the pres- ee he insurgents aré supported by a por- tion of the political party in power: put up to the present what is known as the op- position party proper has not joined the rebels. The antagonistic feelings of the people of Leon and its vicinity and those of Mana- gua date from away back, and are founded upon old jealousies, having religion as their basis, and more modern ideas, on the other hand, as their excuse. Unhappily for President Zelaya, a large consignment of modern arms and artillery, purchased in Germany, which arrived shortly after the occupation of Corinto by the British, and which at one time it was feared would fall into the hands of the British admiral, have, owing to political intrigues, found their way to Leon, and are now to be used against the president and his supporters. The excuse for sending the arms to Leon was that a certain party here was in fa- yor of a dictatorship being declared, and that, therefore, it was advisable that the modern arms and ammunition should be stored at Leon, where, it was asserted, there was less likelihood of a demonstra- tion for or against the government. The Leonists were powerful enough to have their way in this matter, and it would seem from the present developments that this was only one feature of a plot to overthrow the government of President Zelaya. ———-+e-+_____ Judge Couch of Iowa Dead. Shot the Desperado to Death. A Bristol, Fla., dispatch says: After shoot- ing three men, M. F. Grissett was killed yesterday. Grissett was a noted desperado, and shot into a logging camp with a rifle. W. R. Flowers and Henry Calvin opened fire on Grisgett. The desperad> rode at the two men, firing rapidly.
