Talk of Placing Electric Lights About the President’s Summer Home. Marlon Letter in Boston Globe. President Cleveland, while he is here, 1s rarely out riding after dark, unless he is on his way home from a fishing trip; but Mrs. Cleveland, when the weather 1s pleas- ant, usually makes a dally call upon the Jeffersons, and frequently remains until quite late in the afternoon, and it’s often very dark before she reaches Gray Gables. With the bright electric lights on the grounds of the Jefferson estate, and a long and continuous line of street lights from here to the President’s summer home, no matter how dark the night may be, the journey can be made with safety and pleas- ure. The residents on the Monument neck shore will, it is expected, take an active interest in the movement, and it is quite likeiy that the system will be extended to the summer houses on the point below Gray Gables. While there is considerable building all along the shore, the only evidence of activ- ity in that I'ne here is the new dwelling at Gray Gables which President Cleveland 1s naving erect2d fer Brad Wright and his family. The new house, which will be ready for occupancy before the summer season opens, is near the new barn which was bullt last spring, and is on that part of the grounds which faces the lily pond. The house contains sevén rooms, and was designed by William Crump, who built the barn for the President. The house in ap- pearance closely resembles the barn, and Will cost when compieted about $1,200. ‘The interior w.il be of Caroiina hard pine fini: the walis and ceilings lathed and plastered. c : The roof and sides of the building will be shingled, and a broad piazza is on the front of the house overlooking the pond. Mr. Wright's present home is in the lodge, near the present house, while the new house {s neariy a half mile distant from Gray Gables. ‘The lodge was orlginally intended as the quarters for the Cleveland servants and the wards, and next season they will find ac- commodations there. The farm horseg and cattle are kept in the Lew barn, and Mrs. Cleveland's horses in the barn near the will be quartered Gables Tt is likely that the President will have his farm help do considerable agricultural work this season, as there is plenty of rich scil ou the estate, which has never as yet ylelded a good crop, and a new farm wagon and other farming implements have been supplied. cht Ruth, which is hauied up on ‘At the entrance to the Cleveland estate, at the point rearest the railroad from here, the raiiroad company has placed a sign within the past week, which reads as fol- lows: “Ali persons are forbidden crossing the tracl The sigr is piaced within a few feet of the fence inclusing the Cleveland estate. There is only a narrow foot path up a short aud steep hill at this point, and the town’s people are wondering what it all means. With the new house completed and oceu- pled, the Cleveland estate will be quite a settlement during the sammer months, end in addition to the railroad station there wil be a petition for a branch post office, to be cailed Gray Gables, during the time when there are so many people sojourning in that immediate vicinity. WHAT IS FATIGUE? A Description of a Condition That is Femiliar to Every One. wn the Youth's Compant Fatigue is the natural result of labor, and as such ig a periodic symptom with which every h2althy person is familiar. It is-one of the laws of organic life that periods of relaxation shali succeed periods of activity. The heart itvelf is normally in repose for abcut one-thirc of the time con- a by cach beat—a fact in which there mething particularly suggestive and interesting, since physiolegists agree that about one-third of the twenty-four hours shculd be devoted to sleep. fe is made up of a serles of vibrations in which tensicn and rest succeed each other. The heart vibrates about seventy tim: inute; the vibrations of the re- sp: y organs occur about sixteen times in the same period; while the vibrations of the whole organism may be sald to com- plete their eycle ence in twenty-four how Abnormal! fatigue, 2 state approaching e haustion, occurs when cne attempts to alter navure’s rhythm, when the hours of tension are made to encroach upon those which should be devcted to rest, when muscle end nerve e2lready fatigued are driven to further exertion. : Fatigue of a kind known as overtraining resulis, in the case of the athlete, in heart weakness and shortness of breath—“loss of wind,” as It 1s called, while the Iong-coa- tirved fatigue occasioned by excessive ap- to professional or business pur- results in pervous prostration, or in paralys While excessi tigue is in itself un- one of the chief dangers which re- s from it is that commonly indicated by term “catchirg cold.” Thus the dan- &er of sitting in a draught or on the damp ground is many times Ccubled atter great exertion. he application of heat to the surface is a more logical procedure after extreme fatigue. Louis No more unique figure is to be found in the American judiciary than Judge Gaslin of Nebraska, and many are the stories told of this interesting personality. A 4 per cent 2 month mot lender had, throveh the instrumentality of a small loan, secured about everything a homesteader possessed except his farm, but wiih all the payments the loan refused to grow less. Finally action was brought in court to en- ferce payment of the alleged balance by mweens of @ judgment against the man's fart A jury had been secured which un- derstood its business, and in spite of the Instructions of Judge Gaslin, which favor: dant, brought in a verdict for the slobe-Democrat. he sald, “that verdict Is set takes thirteen men to steal a 's farm in this ccurt.” On another occasion a man who had drift- ed over into Nebraska from Colorado, who vas not familiar with the manner of ad- ministering justice on the Nebraska side of the border, appropriated a horse which he found hitched to a post in front of a coun- try store. The horse happened to be the Property of Judge Gaslin. The thief was ceptured, and later bound over to await trial in the district court. A few days af- ter Judge Gaslin met a fellow-judge from another disirict, and requested him, as a favor, to come into his district, on a day specified, and sentence a horse thief, as Gaslin said he felt a little delicacy in sen- tencing a man for stealing his own horse. The fellow jurist assented, and incidenta!l- ly iqutee when the offender was cun- Victed. ‘Oh, he isn’t convicted yet,” replied Judze in, “but I'll tend to that part of it. And he did. tee A Tiny Child. From the Roston Herald. The smallest six-weeks-old baby in Con- necticut is the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Wat- son Van Berkerk of Essex. It is one of twins. The other died shortly after birth. At the time of birth the child which sur- vives welghed one and a half pounds. At the present time the child weighs less than two pounds.
