SUBURBAN NEWS ANACOSTIA, Mrs. Marioni, whcse troubles on account ef her husband have caused her name to appear in print quite frequently of late, has decided to remove from Anacostia, and will make her home with her father in Wash- ingten. Mrs. Gibbons, with whom Mrs. Marioni boarded, is very ill from the effects of the shock caused by the fight in her hovse Saturday evening between Mrs. Ma- rioni’s husband and her father. Leading democrats of Anacostia say that one of the delegates to the Chicago con- vention ought to be chusen from the sec- tion lying on the south side of the Eastern branch, and will do all in their power to bring about such a result. A leap year ball was given last night at Masonic Hall by a number of the young la- dies of Anacostia. It was quite 2 pleasant affair, and was managed by Miss Nellie Leonard, Miss Ella Quaid, Miss Jennie Branson and several others. At the quarterly session of Anacostia Tent, No. 138, Independent Order of Rech- ablites, announcement was made that Mr. George W. Shoemaker, sr., a member of the tent, had been elected by the Grand Tent its grand visitor and lecturer. Mr. Columbus Hager was initiated as a mem- ber of the local tent. After the transaction of routine business, Mr. B. Bryan gave a recitation, and short speeches were made by Messrs. C. Mills, C. B. Bladen, George F. Mattheson and others. The tent will have a reunion March 17. The Junior Daughters of the King of Emmanuel P. BE. Church gave a tea last evening at the rectory. Rev. Mr. Davenport, rector of Emmanuel P. E. Church, has announced that the next confirmation will be performed by Bishop Satterlee soon after his consecration. Mr. A. E. Uncie “Harney” West, one of the oldest and most respectable colored men in this vicinity, is dead. He was an infant when Barney's flotilla was in the Patuxent river in 1812, and was named after the commo- dore. Rev. Mr. Neal of Shepherdstown, W. Va., was the guest of Mr. J. There are still some very dangerous places in the board walks throughout Brookland. The citizens trust these will be looked after before any serious accidents happen. Mr. J. ¥znaga will break ground in a few days for a beautiful residence on Lansing street. Tomorrow night the Church of Our Sa- viour will give an entertainment in the town hall. The program committee have endeavored to secure the best talent, so a good treat is in store for those who come. Among those who wiil participate are Miss Sydney Smail, Mr. Saltzman, Miss Bessie ‘Tyler, Miss Elsie Snyder, Mrs. Odell, Miss Eva Whitford, Mrs. J. J. Costinett, Mr. G. W. There was a large attend- ance, many persons from Washington and Baltimore being present. A handsome gold Watch was won by Mr. Geo. S. Britt, who received the necessary number of votes. ‘W. H. Keates of 1615 5th street northwest, ‘Washington, held the lucky number which woo the gold watch that was raffled. Tae chair for the most popular divine, donated to the lodge booth by Mr. George H. Tucker, ‘was won by Rev. Charies J. S. Mayo, rector of Pinckney Memoria! Church, who received the highest number of votes. The crib for the most popular baby was awarded to Mrs. RR. L. Lawrenson. The contest for the past master’s jewel between Messrs. Eugene A. Fowler and Harry B. Major was very close, the former receiving 531 and the latter 482 votes. The Knights Templar charm, do- mated to the lodge booth by Mr. C. W. Lean- narda, to be awarded to the most popular Knight Templar, was won by Dr. S. C. Cox. The articles that were left over from the ir were disposed of at auction by Mr. les Weeks, the popular auctioneer of Washington. The fair closed with a dance, which lasted till nearly midnight. Messrs. Alfred D. Batley of Bladensburg, L. O. Wisman of Hyattsville and Charles A. Earle of Riverdale have been nominated by Gov. Lowndes as justices of the peace for Prince George's county. The Bas Bleu Literary Society held its regular’ meeting yesterday afternoon at ‘Melrose,” the residence of the Misses Lew- in. Quotations from Longfellow were given at the call of the roll. Miss Edith Walbridge read an excellent essay on the “Life and Works of Longfellow.” Recitations were given by Misses Stever, Perry and Kate Briscoe, and readings by Misses Burnside and Hill. Miss Delia Lester read an inter- esting original story, and Miss Edith Wal- bridge read the prize essay. Musical selec- tions were rendered by Misses Annie Bris- coe, Dent and Wallace. Miss Shellie Chew, daughter of ex-Judge Chew of Upper Marlboro’, is the guest of Mrs. J. B. Burnside. The Hyattsville Assembly was entertained by Miss Corinne McFarland last evening at Ravenswood, the pretty residence of Maj. and Mrs. M. V. Tierney. The attendance of club members was large, and the evening passed quickly with songs, dancing and in- strumental music. Mrs. Joseph Aman re! dered a couple of selections, ‘‘Sweethear' and Streleski's “Dreams,” singing both in exquisite style. Miss Mary Schofield played a number of piano solos that were heartily enjoyed. Miss Edythe Gallant acted as the accompanist of the evening. A bountiful collation was served at 10 o'clock, and then dancing occupied the remainder of the even- ing, together with songs by the members of the club in chorus. Those who were pres- ent were Mrs. Robert Callahan, Mrs. Mc- Farland, Mrs. P. J. For some time there has been talk of a division in the pastorate of the Presby- terian churches here and at Balston, Under the present arrangement, Rev. D. L, Rath- bun is serving both churches, and the Bal- ston brethren, considering their condition such as to warrant a separate church and support of a pastor, have desired that it be so constituted. At a joint meeting of the trustees last week a mutual understanding was arrived at by which if the Balston brethren still desire the change it will be effected. This will throw more burdens financially on both churches, but the chureh here a prospercus condition, and will ! assume the increased responsi- w bilities. Miss Ida N. Ball, who has been visiting her aunt, Mrs. Fulton, at Herndon for sev- eral weeks, returned home Tuesday. ‘The members of the Christian Endeavor Society will hold a business meeting Fri- day night. The quarterly meeting of the school com- missioners was held here Tuesday, at which the business of the last quarter of the public schools was closed up. Secretary and Treas- urer John J. Higgins made the following re- port: Enrollment, white pupils, 3,520; col- ored pupils, 2,051; total enrollment, 5,580. Average attendance, white, 2,260; colored, total average attendance, 9. Ex- white schools, $11,819.56; colored, total expenses, $14,220.01. Ex- penses, colored schools, $1,926.97; total, $12,- George E. Gaither was appointed trustee of school No. 5, election district No. 1, vice Wm. B. Mobley, resigned. A reward of $10 was offered by the commissioners for the arrest and conviction of parties who damaged the school house near Beane. At the conclusion of the meeting of the Teach- ers’ Association, on Friday, the teachers will be paid for the past term. The county commissioners, at a regular meeting held on Tuesday,passed and ordered payment of the following bills for county work: First district—G. F. Snauffer, piking account, $14.60; E. B. Brown, work on road, $9.99. Second district—Wm. Waters, bridge work, $3,195. Fourth district—Wiliiam M. Davis, work at court house, $3; Arthur Myers, bridge, $49.60. The board has ordered the building of a bridge over Muddy branch, between Hunting Hill and Gaithersburg, and the same will be offered for sale to the lowest bidder on Saturday, March 7, by Commissioner Samuel K. A hawk measuring four feet from tip to tip was killed a few days ago by Mr. Geo. Meyer in the vicinity of Bali's mijl. The severe wind storm Monday night and Tuesday is reported to have done much damage in various parts of the county. In the neighborhood of Clopper’s station ard Germantown hay stacks were blown over and fencing badly damaged. The ledies of thé Poolesville Presbyterian Church held a very successful festival a few nights ago at the residence of Misses Rebecca and Dora Hall at that place. Thieves arc active in the vicinity of Martinsburg; Messrs. John Jones, Thomas Poole and Thomas Reed having recently lost stock, fowls and various farm pro- ducts. The clerk of the circuit court has issued marriege licenses to the following parties: Burnham W. Manypenny and Lizzie R. Crown; Chas. H. Gardner and Daisy Kerr; Wm. H. Waters and Mamie Hoyle. Among the recent social events of the county was the marriage at Poolesville Presbyterian Church of Mr. Richard L. Butler of White’s Ferry and Miss Rosa C. Brunner, daughter of Mr. Wm. Brunner of Martinsburg, the ceremony being per- formed by Rev. F. W. Petman, resident pastor. At high roon the bride and groom entered the church preceded by the ushers, Messrs, Americus Brunner, Walter and Harry Butler and Jesse Hyatt, to the strains of the Lohengrih wedding march skillfully rendered on the organ by Mrs. F. W. Petman. At the chancel they were met by the officiating clergyman, who united them according to the church ritual. The bride was becomingly gowned in blue cloth, with appropriate trimmings, with hat and gloves to match, and carried a white prayer book tiled with satin ribbon. ‘The church was beautifully decorated with petted plants and a profusion of ever- greens. At the conclusion of the ceremony the bridal party and friends returned to the residence» of Mr. Brunner, where a re- ception was held during the afternoon.
