An American Makes a Merry Christ- mas for English Ballet Girls. ‘From the Pall Mall Gazette. As most of our readers are aware, thero is now being nightly presented on the Al- hambra stage a ballet of considerable mag- uificence, entitled “Titania.” Regular fre- quenters of the house, on one or the other side of the footlights, have been aware that for several weeks past one of the best boxes in the house has invariably been oo- cupied by the same gentleman, who comes each evening to the theater in time for the commencement of “Titania,” and leaves immediately after the curtain has descend- ed on its final scene. This amiable extrav- agance costs this munificent patron of the ballet the trifle of eighteen guineas e week. On Friday night the members of the bal- let were offically told to attend on the fol- lowing morning, when a presentation would be madesto them on behalf of this same benevolent gentlemar. Great curiosity was felt, as the regular appearance of the soll- tary figure ‘n the box had naturall aroused the interest of the performers, al- though he had never shown any inclination to come behind the scenes or to make the personal acquaintance of any one of them. It was not, in fact, until Friday evening that his name was made known. On Saturday morning, as it is needless to say, the ballet mustered in full force. The profession of ballet girl is not a very lucra- tive one, and at this time of year any little gift, whether In money or in kind, is no doubt acceptable. But not one of them dreamed of the extent of the benevolence of the unknown old gentleman whom they had reen “in front” night after night. One by one they were called into the committee room, and, according to their position on the salary list, were awarded varying sums of money. The principals received £40 apiece, the average among the rank and file was about £10 each, and even the chil- dren, whose wage Is but 6s a week, received each 4 sovereigns. The donor, whese name is Mr. William L. Winans, is an Americar’. He was not pres- ent, his gift, which in all amounted to over £1,100, being distributed by Mr. Alfred Moul, the Alhambra manager. He, how- ever, was in his customary box at the even- ing performance, and the ordinary visitors to the theater must have marveled what amazing fascination its occupant possessed for the ladies on the stage. It is, perhaps, not unfair to add that the male dancers and supernumeraries did not share in the distribution, Mr. Winans does not confine his benevo- lence to the music hall stage. For rome years he has spent the winter at Brighton, and the ladies and children engaged in the Brighton pantomime have always had oc- casion to thank him for generous gifts. He is far and away the most IHberal supporter cf the drama in London, for he takes not only a box for himself every night, but boxes by the dozen, which he gives away to his friends. Three hundred unds @ month is said to be the extent of hie cus- tom to the theaters when he is in London. Tried Coffee for Facl. From the Philadelphia Record. A curious story is told by. he officers of the German steamer Salerno, which sail- ed from Rie for New York, with a cargo of coffee on November 20. This side of the Delaware breakwater her supply of coal gave out. Then her captain, finding a fierce gale blowing, decided to reverse his course, which he did, using some of ‘he ship's woodwork for fuel. An attemp: vas made to burn some of the coffee fr fuel, but the aroma drove the men out co (1@ “go | room. Then the provisions guy- out, the ship was in bad straits whey he reach. ed Burmvuda, December 17,
