This explains why oystermen transfer the oys- ters by ship loads from the bays along the Atlantic coast, where they multiply rapid- ly, but where, In consequence of the lack of food, they are stunted in growth, to the estuartes of Connecticut, New York and New Jersey. It is believed, however, by many of the oyster growers that if the bi- valves could be fattened in pure sea water they would be of better flavor, as well as more wholesome. The difficulty has been to provide the preper food. After seven years of experiment these oyster growers have hopes that the diffi- culty has been overcome. The new method, which aims to supply the requirements of pure water and the necessary food, has been put in practice on the shores of east- ern Virginia, Situated, as it is, near the end of the peninsula, there are no streams of any size flowing into the bay, and the water is as unpolluted as that of the ocean itself. In the low, marshy ground that fringes the bay a number of parallel canals are to be excavated, the sea water being admitted into them by sluice gates. In these canals the oyster will be grown. ‘Phe mollusks will find there their natural food, which consists of diatoms and other minute algae, which are reproduced in pro- digto nantities under the conditions ex- isting of the mixture of-salt water with a e of fresh water. The prac- of the plan has already been ona small seale. Thus far the prac- followed of transplanting the h the plan in full operation this will not be necézsary, as the canals open right on the breeding grounds, and during the early summer, when the spawn is given off, it will float into the canals, and oyster il be planted naturally. Other ad- vantages claimed for the new method of are the easy exclusion of the ene- mies of the oyster and the convenience of harvesting. AUCTION SALES. AUCTION SALES. AUCTION SALES. THIS EVENING.
