John Jackson, better known as the notor- ious “Red Bill,” is again in the clutches of the law. He was arrested on Saturday by Officer Edwards for a murderous assault committed on a companion about ten days ago on “Herring Hill.” Jackson was located in a house on 27th street. He saw the offi- cer appr-aching, and tried to escap> through a window. The leap he made was not es- timated properly, and Jackson received a severe injury to his leg. He then accom- panied the officer to the station without further ceremony. Lr. William S. McIihenny died yesterday at 3263 Prospect avenue. He was sixty- nine years of age, and was a native of Pennsylvania, coming here about twelve years ago. Dr. Mcihenny was ill but thirty hours. Death came through a sudden at- tack at the heart. Deceased had aot prac- ticed his profession for years. Marauders are at work on Water street. A few nights ago they entered a machine shop near 324 and began to take apart various pieces of machinery, preparatory to a detailed haul. They were evidently frightened away, the loosened parts being found lying about by the owner the next morning, and the front door open. The successful carrying off of these p.eces would have yielded the thief or thieves but a dol- lar or two at a junk shop, while it would bave cost the owner several hundred dol- lars to replace them. Other such depreda- tions, mingled with petty annoyances, are being experienced by owners of business property along the river front. The police say they Know the guilty ones, and are but watching for a favorable opportunity to bring them to eccount. Hopkins has peculiar ideas about the question of practical jokes, and i: was because of these ideas that he got himself in trouble Saturday night. He is a special police officer, who holds a commis- sion from the District Commissioners. His Leat is in the neighborhood cf Pennsyl- varia avenue and 18th street, and in that vicinity the residents contribute to his sup- port. Among them is Carl Efke, who keeps: a dining saloon at 1726 Pennsylvania ave- nue, and the alleged joke consisted in the taking from in front of the dining room of two geese. These particular fowls were dressed and were hanging so high that Mr. Eike thought he would let them remain out over night, for the cold air would not hurt them. Special Officer Hopkins found the fowls where they were not lost, and, in- stead of turning them over to their owner, he took them home for Sunday dinner. Early yesterday morning the dining room proprietor reported his loss, and Detective Khodes was detailed on the case. It was rot the first time that fowls had been taken from there, and because of past ex- periences the officer suspected that Hop- kins had taken the geese. Without losing any time he hastened to Hopkins’ house, No. 811 North Carolina avenue, where he found the officer in bed. Phe geese were being cooked, one boiling and the other baking. “I was only joking with him,” was what the special officer said. The officer did not take the geese for the rezson that they were hot and greasy. Hopkins appeared in Judge Miller’s court this morning, and made his explanation. “When I saw the geese hanging in front of the place about 2 o’cleck in the morn- ing,” said the prisoner, “I rang the door bell, but failed to arouse anybody in the house, and then it occurred to me that I'd play a joke on Mr. Eike, and so I took the geese home.” “But why did you cook them?” Judge Miller asked.~ “They were very tough,” he answered, “and I thought I would have one of them for dinner and take the other one back.” Judge Miller failed to appreciate the joke and questioned the prisoner about his movements after he had lowered the fowls from their high perch. He said he kept them in the patrol box until morning, and said that two men were present when he took them. — * The court held him guilty of theft, and fined him $20, or sixty days in jail. FROM CARDS TO JAIL. Too Much Poker Got Frithe Inte Con- tact With the Law. A game of poker and gambling on the races across the river was too strong a com- bination for Edward L. Frithe, a° young man from New York, and when he had lost his last cent he endeavored to replenish his fund by taking some of E. L. Perkins’ cloth- ing. The latter lives at No. 505 7th street rortheast, and Frithe occupled a room in his house. Saturday after he had lost all his money he took Perkins’ coat and vest, neck- tie and overcoat and left part of them at a pawnshop. Then he went to the Baltimore and Potomac depot to take a train for Balti- more, but was arrested by Policeman Cos- tello, who had been given a description of the man. He had the overcoat with him at the time, and admitted that he had taken the other articles. To the officer he said he had been forced by hunger to take the clothing. The pawn tickets for the other articles were surrendered, and the man was locked up. This morning w appeared in the Police Court he plead guilty and told the judge that he was forced to take the articles of clothing because of his condition. He said he wanted to go to Bal- timore, where he had friends, apd then he was going to send Mr. Perkins the tickets and money. Most of his money, he said, he lest at 1 game of poker on the train. Judge Miller told him that Mr. Perkins was a working man, and could not afford to play poker, and he Is entitled to be protect- ed from those wl their money in this y.
