HOW THE MOVEMENT WAS STARTED Bodies From Which Delegates Are Exp2cted. Forty-six ————— THE GENERAL PROGRAM ee Since the last publication in The Star with reference to the national anti-saloon convention io be held in this city Decem- ber 17 to 19, arrargements have been pro- gressing, end everything is now practically ir readiness for the gathering of the op- ponents of the drinking saloon, who are expected from all perts of the country. The following particulars in regard to the origin and progress of the movement have been obtained by The Star from the head- qvarters, prior to the convention, in the Washington Lean and Trust building: ‘The idea of organizing a National Anti- Saloen League hzs been discussed in the District of Columbia league ever since the inciplency of the latter. As an effort to bring the national organization into existe: Prof. H. R. Stewart, who was then on active worker in the local league, proposed a standing committee on national organiza- tion as early as December, 189%, when the resent revised constitution of the local . league was under discussion. It was thought by the majority of his associates that such work did not belong to a stand- Ing committee, and nothing further was dcne at that time. How It Originated. The present active efforts originated with @ cenversation between Archbishop Ireland of the Roman Catholic Church and Rev. Dr. A. J. Kyrett, chairman of the commit- tee on temperance and prohibition of the Methodist Episcopal Church. These two eminent divines happened to be traveling tegether, and naturally conversed about temperance and the suppression of the ¢rink traffic, In which both are greatly in- terested. They agreed that a platform on hich all opponents of the saloon could jtand for united aggressive work was prac- ‘cable ard very desirable. Subsequently Rev. Dr. Kynett, while traveling in like manner with Rev. L. B. Wilson, D.D., pres- leent of the District of. Columbia Anti- Saloon Leagve, was informed by Dr. Wil- son of the large degree of success that the District of Columbia Anti-Saloon League has met with in bringing together-repre- sentatives of different denominations, of al political parties, and both white and colered; and Dr. Kynett suggested that the District of Columbia league take the initta- tive in securing a conference of leaders preliminary to a national anti-saloon con- Yention. ‘fhis conversation occurred last pering, and the suggestion was laid before the execut've cammittee of the local leagu>. It was decided to undertake the work; ar- Tangements were at once begun for a con- ference to meet here the last three days of May, 1895, and invitations were sent out all over the country east of the Mississippi. Arranging for a Convention. From the responses it soon became evi- Jent that a number of prominent speakers and writers could not attend at that time, which included Decoration day, owing to previous engagements elsewhere. There- upon the conference was recalled, and the ccmmittee in charge undertook to endeavor to settle the preliminaries of a national convention by correspondence. Having re- yeived what were considered a sufficient Humber of signatures, the call for the con- vention was given to the press October i8. Names continued to arrive subsequently, ineluding those of Rev. Jas. M. Cleary, president of the Catholic Total Abstinenc Union of America; Rev. A. J. Kynett, D.D., LL.D., above mentioned; Rev. S. M. New- man, D.D., rastor of the First Congrega- ticnal Church, and Maj.Geo. A. Hilton, presi- Gent of the National Gospel Mission Union. Excepting individual representatives of the religicus d2aominations, the committee only asked fo. signatures of the heads of na- tional and international temperance socie- ties and rational organizations known to be in sympathy with anti-saloon work, and the responses were almost without excep- tion favorable to the convention and to the national organization which ts expected to result frcm its deliberations. Places of Mceting. Headquarters during the convention will be in Calvary Baptist Sunday school house, and'mest of the sessions of the convention will be held there. It is expected that a public session will be held the evening of Tuesday, December 17, in First Congrega- tional Church, and that of the business ses- sion of the convention the evening of Wed- the 18th, in Calvary Baptist Sun- nool house will be open to the pub- Admission to the business sessions will Ne. probably be confined to delegates and to known fricnds of the cause. The promotion of the convention has been managed by the District 0% Columbia Anti-Saloon League and {ts executive com- mittee. The special committees thus far appointed are the committee on call, con- sisting of Rev. L. B. Wilson, D.D.,*presi- dent of the league, as chairman: J Ewin, first vice president, secretary of the committee; Mrs. H. A. Gillenwater; A. N. Canfield, grand chief teryplar of the Inde- pendent’ Order of Good Templars, and Mr. Cavour O. Bohrer; a committee on place of meeting, consisting of Col. John F. Vinal, chairman; Albert E. Shoemaker, esq., and Mr. Blackford; a committee on accom- medations, consisting of Mr. Jesse C. Suter, chairman; Mrs. Clinton Smith and Mr. /A. 1. Swartwout; a committee on transportation, consisting of Rev. F. D. Power, D. D.. chairman; Mr. Geo. S. Gib- son and M-. Edward H. Jones, and a com- mittee on ys and means, consisting of Mr. N. E. Vowles, chairman; Mrs. M. V. Page, Mr. William’ A. Hedrick, Sergt. John C. Daley and Mr. Ed. A. Beekman. Bodies to Be Represented. Forty-six bodies entitled to 143 delegatgs heve alresdy signified their intention of being represented in the convention, includ- ing the following, which are national or de- nominaticnal in jurisdiction or scope: Na- tional Temperance Society, International Evpreme Lodge of the Independent Order of Good Templars, High Tent of the Inde- rendent Order of Rechabites, Supreme ‘ouncil ef the Templars of Honor and Tem- perance, National Non-partisan W.C.T.U. National Diviston Sons of Temperance, Na~ tional Gospel Mission Union, National Junior Prohibition League, Woman's Na- tional Keeley League, Anti-Saloon Army, the Epworth League (Methodist Episcopal), the Methodist Protestant Christian En- deavor Union, the permanent committees on temperance of the Methedist Episcopal Church, the Presbyterian Church and the United ‘Brethren Church, and the trustees of the Universalist denomination. It ts also expected that the Roman Catholic Church wiil be represented by Bishop Keane of the Catholic University, tf not by a full delegation. It is also expected that a great many more national bodies, as well as those whose jurisdiction is less wide, will be heard from by the 17th, when the sessions of the convention begin. —_- NO EROFIT IN MINING SILVER.
