24 THD EVINING STAR, SATURDAY, DECEMBER 17, 1895-TWENTY-FOUR PAGES. IN MUSICAL CIRCLES Many Matters of Interest to Local Music Loving People. Preparations by the Choral Society for the Coming Performance of the “Messiah”—Other Items, The coming performance of “The Messiah" by the Choral Society at Convention Hall the 17th instant promises to be one of the best that the society has given. The director, Dr. Harry C. Sherman, has drilled his fo: so that the choruses will all be excellently sung, and the quartet, consisting of Miss Charlotte Maconda, soprano; Miss Ruth Thompsen, contralto; Mr. E. C. Towne, ten- cr, and Dr. Carl Dufft, bass, is composed of well-known and experienced oratorio sing- ers. “The Messiah” ts cne of the most lofty end elevating compositions In the whole range of sacred music. It Is sald that Handel composed this great oratorio in twenty-three days; but he must have medi- ated long upon his exalted theme before he Legan to put his ideas into the definite shape of musical secre. . There will pe much interest felt in the first appearance with the society of Mi Ruth Thompson, whose early work in music and whose foundation for her presnt excel- lence were made in this city. She is said to have developed greatly since she went to New York and continued under competent instruction there the cultivation of her rich contralto voce. She will be warmly greeted by her old friends here, who are gratified at her suce Anothe presting feature of the coming perfurmance will be the first appearance ot the new Wash.ngton Syinphouy Orchestra, which has been assembied by Mr. Herman Rakemann. ‘The progress of Mr. Rake- marn’s work in the tormation of this or- chestra has been told in tnese columus, and those who heard its rehearsal of “The Mes- sian’ music last Sunday are satistied that its accompaniment will surpass that of any that the society has had since it sang under the Weadership of Walter Damrosch. The reservation of membership seats has teen going on rapidly during the week at Ellis’ music store, and after next Tuesday the box sheet will be open to the general public. It is the aim of the board of directors of the Choral Society to inspire in the active membership an esprit du corps that shall increase the interest and dignify the con- nection. Though there is alrealy a large and efficient body of !adies and gentlemen in the ehorus, there should be included in the roll of active membership every prom- irent singer in the District. The best sole singers should consider it a privilege to sing with the Choral Society, and the di rectors hop2 that before this season is over such will be the case. That is the feel- ing in regard to oratorio sovieties in other cities, ard it should be so here. “It 1s to be hoped also that the project of erecting a music hall in this city, that was cutlined a few weeks ego in The Siar, will net be abandoned, but will be pushed through the Influence of the Ckeral Society. That body would be most berelited by the erection of such a hall, and the board of directors, it is urderstood, will endeavor to enlist the sympath.es of some of its hon- orary members in the projec:, so as to give AUCTION SALES ERS ART GALLERIES, 1229-81 G Street Northwest. “From the Land of the Rising Sum.’ Week Commencing DECEMBER NINTH.
