When coal gas was first introduced its rovelty aroused keen opposition and fears as to its safety. “It was said to be poison- ous and highly explosive, and it came slowly into general acceptance and use. Now the whole world uses it, and great fortunes have grown out of its manufac- ture and sale. When water gas was discovered its use was bitterly opposed by the existing gas in- terests, then firmly established, and it was denounced as an impracticable “experi- ment,” “poisonous” and dangerous to health and property. With only about one- sixth incfeased illuminating power it has made its way everywhere, and enriched its fortunate owners. When electricity flashed its dazzling are light upon the world, and, later, evolved its decorative incandescent lamp for do- mestic uses, the gas interests made com- mon cause against this new and vigorous rival, and the appalling dangers of the electric wire and lamp were most graphic- ally set forth to influence capital and in- timidate the public. Despite its great cost, which twenty years of study and experi- ment have failed to materially reduce, and which still makes this illuminant a luxury for the comparative few, the electric light is established throughout the world, and has produced enormous profits for those who were wise enough to perceive its pro- spective value. And now modern science has produced acetylene, a light more brilliant and beau- tiful than any of its predecessors, and, lo! we have the same old cry from the same Chickering Pianos and Mason & Hamlin Organs. They are principally interesting to us, however, and to the public generally as indicating a highly excited condition of mind among the large owners of gas and electric light stocks. Acetylene will stand or fall upon its own merits, and we advise any one who is in- terested in the new illuminant either from a scientific standpoint or as an Intending consumer or shareowner,to visit the exhibit now open to the public at No. 734 lth street, and investigate the subject for him- self. The exhibit is a strikingly interesting one, and if the gas has one-half of the merit claimed for it, for light, heat and power its managers need pay little atten- tion to the statements of its detractors. VOTING FOR BISHOP No Choice Yesterday at the Episcopal Gon- “vention. How the Vote Was Scattered — Te Renew the Battle Today— Amendments Adopted, Yesterday afternoon, after The Star's re- Port of the diocesan convention closed, bal- loting for candidates to fill the place of bishop of the new diocese began. Before calling {cr nominations, a brief religious service was held, conducted by Rev. Dr. Elliot, in which a blessing was asked upon the work that was about to be accom- plished. There was some question as to how the balloting should be done. A mo- tion was made that there should be an in- formal ballot, in which the lay delegates were to take part, for the sake of finding out what the general feeling of the con- vention might be. Those who favored this plan argued that while the election was vested in the clergy, it would still be a saving of time in the long run if they could know the sentiments of the laity, who must, after a candidate has received the necessary number of votes from the clergy, confirm the vote. With the constitution of Maryland in force in the new diocese, a two-thirds vote was necessary to elect. As has heretofore been pointed out in The Star, the chances of any candidate receiving such a large vote are very small, and when the conven- tion adjourned last evening after taking a number of ballots there was a general im- pression that the convention would have to adjourn finally without electing a bishop. In that event the election will go over to the next convention in May, by which time the different vestries will have had an op- portunity to pass upon the important amendment favored by the convention yesterday providing for an election by @ majority vote. The Nominations, When Dr. Elliot announced that nomina- tions would be received, the following were made from the floor without remarks: Rev. Randolph H. McKim, D.D., by Rev. Alex- ander Mackay Smith, D. D.; Rev. John H. Elliot, D.D., of the Church of the Ascen- sion, by Rev. Charles F. Sontag; Rev. Mor- gan Dix, D.D., of Trinity rish, New York city, by Rev. I. L. Townsend, D.D.; Rev. John 8. Lindsay of St. Paul's Church, Boston, by Rev. John London; Rev. Thos. G. Addison, D.D., of Trinity Church of this city, by Rev. George H. Johnstone, D.D.; Rev. Alexander Mackay-Smith, D.D., by Rev. James E. Poindexter, and Rev. Rich- “ponies Howell, by Rev. James E. Buck, The Ballots, On the first ballot 62 votes were cast, which made 42 necessary to a choice. Rev. Morgan Dix and Rev. John 8S. Lindsay, D.D., had 24 votes between them, which was understood as representing the strength of the high church faction, or the minority. They divided theirs votes less than did the majority, whose votes were scattering among nearly a dozen candi- dates. The first vote was as follows: Dr. McKim, 18; Dr. Elliot, 5; Dr. Dix, 18; Dr. Lindsay, 6; Dr. Addison, 2; Dr. Mackay Smith, Mr. Howell, 1; Dr. W. R. Hun- tngton, 1; Rev. G. F. Williams, 1; Dr. David Greer, 1, and Dr. W. L. Langford, 1. A letter was then read to the delegates announcing the desire of Dr. Huntington that, if his name was presented to the con- vention, it should be withdrawn, and a sec- ond ballot was ordered. Seven ballots were held during the after- noon and evening, and while a few votes shifted around, the strength of the two factions showed little evidence of change. Apparently the vote of Dr, Dix was trans- ferred to Rev. Dr. J. H. Eccleston of New York. The last vote of the evening was as follows: Dr. McKim, 16; Dr. Elliot, 3; Dr. Dix, 0; Dr. Lindsay, Dr. Addison, 1; Dr. Mackay Smith, Mr. Howell, 1; Dr. Sat- terlee, 8, and Dr. Eccleston, 25. Majority Vote. It took some little time to count the votes on the different ballots, and while this was being done the convention took up the con- sideration of the proposed amendments to the constitution. Some of these, notably the one providing for the election of the bishop by the majority vote, gave rise to consider- able discussion. It was finally adopted, and will be sent down to the vestries along with the other reccmmended changes. A curious and unexpected feature of the discussion was the fact that a larger number of lay delegates than clerical voted against the amendment, which provides for a concur- rent vote of the laity and clergy und con- siderably adds to the impo-tance and dig- rity of the laity in the convention. The resolution which gives the bishop the right to express his sentiments on any subject in the convention, but not to close the cebate, was also teken up and passed after a lively discussion. Farther Amendments. At the evering session the balloting occu- pied almost the entire attention of the con- vention. although further amendments were considered while tle ballots were being counted. They were all adopted without serious opposjtion. Mr. J. C. Bancroft Davis introduced a res- olution that the convention meet on the third Wednesday in May to finally consider the resolutions which were passed yester- day and incorporate the changes involved in the constitution of the diocese, if they met with the approval of the vestries of the several parishes. This resolution is neces- sary, because the provision that the con- vention meet on the third Wednesday in January of each year is not in force until approved by the vestries of the several parishes. It was passed practically unani- mously. . A resolution introduced by Dr. Addison that the division of the diocese into arch- deaconries be postponed until after the election of the bishop was passed. The fol- lcwing committee was announced on the in- corporation of the diocese: Messrs. Blair Lee, William A. Meloy, and A. L. Browne. At the suggestion of the president, the convention then took up the place for the next meeting and accepted the invitation of Dr. Addison to come to Trinity Church. At the session yesterday, after a number of ballots, Rev. Mackay Smith, D.D., was elected as the seventh member of the stand~ ing committee. —___.___ Why Speaker Reed Smiled. New York Cor. Phila. Press. One very interesting Incident associated with the ceremony of tnducting Mr. Reed into the speakership was not reported from Washington, but with the return of the Congressmen to New York for the brief recess it has been told here. When ex-Speaker Crisp was escorting Mr. Reed to the Speaker's chair the ex- Speaker ard the Speaker-elect entered the House by a doorway which was not the one which some of the members thought would be chosen for that entrance. In the passageway leading to this doorway Amos J. Cummings stood, not being aware that Mr. Reed and Mr. Crisp would come by that way. Suddenly a heavy hand was laid upon Mr. Cummings’ shoulder, and he heard a familiar voice, speaking in mock seriousness, say to him, ‘‘Amos, stand out of the way.” Mr. Cummings compact- ed himself into as small a compass as pos- sible, so that Mr. Reed might pass, for it was he who h4d spoken. As the Speaker was squeezing by, Cummings said to him, “Tom, are you going to the place of exe- cution or to the throne?” A swift smile passed over Mr. Reed's countenance, @ quick look of merriment which was no- ticed by many who were near him who did not understand the cause of it, and the only answer which he gave to Mr. Cummings was a chuckle. That he re- membered that question of Cummings was made evident the next day when he met the Congressman, and made a witty com- ment upon it, aithough he did not answer Cummings’ question. — Barred From the Mat The Postmaster General has denied the privileges of the mails to the Hamburg State Lottery Company, located at Neus- trelitz, Germany. A similar order was is- sued against the Inter-State Savings, Loan and Trust Corporation of Cincinnati, Ohio, - ——+-- ‘A telegram was received at the department headquarters of the army in Denver, Col. yesterday, from the commander of Fo Grant, Arizona, stating that it was report two Indians had been murdered.
