14 THE EVENING STAR, FRIDAY, DECEMBER 6, 1895—-SIXTEEN PAGES. GONE AFTER DUCKS The President Has Taken a Trip Down to North Carolina. He May Be Gone About a Week if the Sport is Good Those Who Accompanied Him. Recent reports received by the President Indicated that ducks and geese have appear- ed in large numbers in the favored waters of the sounds of North Carolina, and the temptation was too strong for bim to re- sist. Con juently he has again laid aside the cares of official business for a season of sport among the water fowl of the “tar heel state.” Accompanied by Dr. O'Reilly of the army, Commander G. F. Wills, naval secretary of the light house beard, and Commander B. P. Lamberton, inspector of the local light house district, President Cleveland quietly embarked on the light house tender Maple at the 7th street wharf at an early hour last night, and is now well on his way to his favorite hunting grounds. As usual, his plans were kept a close secret, and the President got away before the other officials of the gov- ent, including the members of the leg- ative branch, were aware of his purpose to desert them for a while. Probable Duration of His Trip. ‘The little light hovse tender is well_provis- jored, and it is likely that if the weather is fair the President will not return to Washington before the 12th or 14th of the month. The Maple was headed for the mouth of Chesapeake bay just about dusk, and the trip began with a cloudy northwest and a rather raw and biting wind that Is commonly regarded as the best possible weather for waterfowl in this section. Un- less it is deemed well to le up in the lower Potomac over night on the chance of pick- ing up some ducks there, the Maple should arrive at Norfolk this forengon. -There she 1 enter the Chesapeake and Albemarle canal and pass through -the upper end ef the system of sounds which extend from Virginia clear down to Wilmington, N. C. It is hoped that the trip will be even More successful than that undertaken last spring in the same waters. All of the President's companions have made this trip before in his company, and are consequently well acquainted with the best shooting grounds. It is expected that the crutse will extend as far south as Wil- mington, N. C., though most of the time the erty will be furtker up the sounds not far from Roanoke Island. Jeg 4 Peculiar Fraud, The Postmaster General has a queer case of fraud on his desk A woman mail car- rier in Kentucky was stopped one day near- ly a year ago by an idiotic negro. All he did was to call-‘to her to stop, and moved as if to catch the horse by the bridle. The woman drove on and the negro did not fol- low. Knowing the idiocy of the man, the authorities did nothing about it, but a few w ago a white man named Mullin had the negro arrested in order to get the stand- Ing reward of $250 offered by the govern- m.ent in such cases. The idiot was sent to the penitentiary and Mullin applied for the reward. It is likely the matter will be re- ferred to the Department of Justice and Mullin be put through for fraud So eae SALES OF REAL ESTATE, &e. AUCTIO?
