24 THE EVENING STAR SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 30, 1895—TWENTY-FOUR 7PAGES; FORMER NA yAL TACTICS. Sometimes Theory Was "Converted Into Practice and Then It Was Not. From Temple Bar. ‘The line of battle simply meant that, up- on coming in touch of an enemy, an ad- miral formed his fieet in one long line, in which each ship followed in the wake of the cne immediately preceding it, at a sufit- cient distarce to allow room for maneuver- ing. In this order the two fleets ranged alongsile of one anotker, discharging their broadsides as they passed, until one line was thrown into confusion, whereupon the commander of the other hauled down signal for “a line head’ and hoisted that for “a gereral chase," which meant that his ships were to close with those of the enemy, .nd finish the business with the grappling ircn and the cutlass. This was a naval bi in theory; and, supposing the ant. eally in edrnest, the the- ory was capable of being converted into extremely good practice, but in the eigh- teenth certur wis just what the French rarely were. The tradition of the English service was that a commander should destroy his ene- my’s ships; of the French, that he should preserve Fis own. Coasequently a French admiral would never accept battle until he had gained a pesition in which he could, at any moment, run out of action before the wind, and as an English admiral would never leak his own Iine to force him, most actions ended in the fleets defiling past one another, the French bringing down the English spars, the English hull- ing the Frezch with every shot, until the French, having, as they considered, made pursuit impossible, put suddenly about and ran before the wind to fulfill the'r destiny of living to fight another day. Of course, it was always open to a deter mined officer to disregard “the line ahead’ and close with the eremy pell-mell by means of a “general chase.” Anson fell back on this in his battle with La Jon- quieré and St. George, when he saw the Frenchmen playing their old geme of wait- ing upon the night; Hawke made use of it on that winter afternoon when, with a gale howling on a lee shore, he followed Con- flans through the shallows and between the granite reefs into Quiberon bay, and Boscawen adopted it when M. de la Clue showed him his heels along the Barbary coast.
