THE EVENING STAR, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 27, 1895-TWELVE PAGES. SUBURBAN NEWS ANACOSTIA, Business men of Anacostia are com- plaining greatly of the effect of the pres- ent status of the street railroad qnestion cn the affairs of the town generally. It is stated that in some lines of trade no transactions whatever have occurred for several weeks, and no change is looked for until affairs settle down into their normal condition, which, it ts feared, wiil not be for several weeks yet at the earliest. A leading citizen of the town last night told a Star reporter that there is a move- .Ment on foot to get rapid transit on the Anacostia railway and that it will be con- summated as soon as necessary financial arrangements can be completed “It is cer- tain, however,” said he, “that no effort will be made to get permission from Congress to erect a trolley line, and my impression is that if it shall be demonstrated to the satisfaction of President Griswold and other persons who are among the few who ire willing to put money into a rapid transit scheme, that compressed air can be successfully used as a motive power, that will be the plan adopted. It may be possible that President Griswold, although he is now visiting his friends in Connecti- cut, may find it convenient to also visit the compressed air motor works in New York state and make a personal inspecticn of their merits before_bis return home.” The fact was recalled yesterday *that about two years ago the main line of the Anacostia railroad was entirely relaid with the best quality of rails of sufficient weight to bear any ordinary rapid transit car of Modern construction, and this fact will en- able the change from horse power to repid transit, if compressed air will answer and Is desired to be made at comparatively small cost. It is understood that application will be made to Congress at an early day for an appropriation for the repair of the navy yard bridge, witch ts satd to be badly in Need of a thorough overhauling. A promi- nent physician of East Washington yester- day told a Star reporter that a day or two since he was hurrying across the bridge tn his carriaze to visit a patient in Anacos- tia, who was very sick, but was compelled by the bridge keeper to walk his horse ba- cause, as the keeper stated, the bridge was in_an unsafe condition. The Ladies’ Aid Society of the Anacostia Baptist Church will have an “Old Ladies’ ‘Tea’ at the church tonight. Those partici- pating will be costumed in dress of a cen- tury ago. Burr and many Ef. F. Bo other Mr. C. R. Burr, a well-known Anacostian, has been appointed director of the muste at the Anacostia branch of the Central Union Mission, and has organized a large choir to assist in the services. Mr. Howard Wells, who came to Ana- costia from Connecticut a short time be- fore the recent lock out and became a driver of a car on the Anacostia railway, has been appointed acting secretary and treasurer of the railway company during the sickness of the secretary and treasurer, Mr. J. Lb. Pitcher. The ladies of Garden Memorial Church, Rey. J. HB. North, pastor, will celebrate Thanksgiving day by the distribution of a large number of good things tu the worthy and needy poor of the town and vicinil It is understood that a large number of tickets have been soid for the ball for the benefit of the locked out drivers of the * Anacostia Railway Company, which {fs to be held tonight at Masonic Hall, an@ it is thought that the result will bo of sub- stantial benetit to those for whom the en- tertainment is to be given. —_—_—_.
