A union prayer meeting preliminary to the beginning of evangelistic’ services, un- der tke auspices of the Baptist and Presby- terian churches, was held last night in the Anacostia Baptist Church, Rev. H. T. Ste- venson, pastor. It is said to be practically settled that should the persons who have intimated their intention of applying for a saloon license in Anacostia do ‘so, and comply with all the requirements of the law, the license will be issued. Although it was un- derstood that applications for the opening of new saloons would not be considered vn- less filed in the office of the excise board on or before October 10, it is said that an exception was made in the Anacostia mat- ter. At any rate, those interested in the prcposed saloon say there is no necessity for them to hurry in the case, and they seem to be very confident that they will ke successful. ‘"’. W. Harrison, a driver for the Big Four Company, was thrown from his wagon by his horses taking fright in Anacestia yes- terday, and barely escaped having his head run over. He was sent to Proyidence Hos- pital to have the bruises and cuts, which he received by striking the ground, dressed. The “china committee” of the ‘proposed bazar for the benefit of the Masons, of hich Mrs. J. E. Hartley is chairman, held a meeting last night and perfected ar- rangements for the part the committee will take in the enterprise. Rev. J. B. North, pastor of the Minnesota Avenue Presbyterian Church, who was very sick for some weeks, has entirely re- covered. Mr. James Reagan of Maryland is the Guest of his brother, Officer John Reagan. es BRIGHTWOOD. The Brightwood Citizens’ Association held its regular monthly meeting last night at the Br'ghtwood Hotel. Among those pres- ent were President W. V. Cox, Secretary Claude F. King, Dr. C. G. Stone, Dr. J. Hamilton Stone, Edw. T. Bates, Theo. C. Feiter, J. A. Lavender, W. J. Cook, W. A. Knowles and Geo. Field. Mr. Bates, chair- man of the fire, police and light committee, reported on the presentation of the petition recently, and a favorable hearing before Commissioners Ross and Powell. In regard to fire protection he was told that the Com- missioners had already asked Chief Par- rish of the fire department for an estimate of the necessary service, but the site for Brightwood avenue engine house has not yet been determined. The subjects of water main assessment and street extension were spcken upon, but ne action taken. Mr. W. J. Cook moved that the committee on streets, roads and bridges urge the construction of the side- walk along Brightwood avenue from Gen- esee street to the Emory Chapel. Dr. C. G. Stone spoke at length upon the eubject of typhoid fever, which is now call- ed to attention by the fact of one family in Takoma Park, with eight members sick, and another in Brightwood Park, with four cases in the family, claiming that he has traced the cause of the disease from impure drinking water. In this connection, he par- ticularly urges the necessity of sewers in the resolutions, declairing that the atten- tion of the Commissioners of the District of Columbia be called to the great necessity for the completion of the contemplated ex- tension of the Piney branch sewer and its ramifications. The association heartily indorsed the rec- ommendations of the Medical Society of the District, of Columbia made to the last con- gress, and that the recommendations of Col. Elliott, in regard to the purification ard filtration of the water supply of the District receive favorable action from the coming congress. The Christian Endeavor Society gave a Teception to Mrs. Frederick Bex and Miss Lucy Broster, who have returned from England, at the home of Mrs. Jane Mac- Elwee on Flint street. Among those who assisted in entertaining were Mr. J. G. Keene, Miss Clara Clark, Miss Lucy Bric- ter, Miss Anna Nalley, Miss Virgie Brown, Misses Sophie, Edith and Annie Robinson. Mr. John G. Keene Was chosen as a delegate to the Distriot society. — + HYATTSVILLE. The ticket office of the Baltimore and Ohio station was entered last night by a thief and $ in change taken from the safe, which was forced open. The thief got into the office by prying open the door and lifting the latch. He carried off the monty drawer, which, fortunately, con- tained but %. It is thought that the rob- bery was committed by some one who was well acquainted with the place. An interesting meeting of the Chillum Grange was held Thursdey evening. Mas- ter Wm. R. McChesney presiding. Mr. Jes. Enos Ray was the lecturer, and in- troduced the subject of “Celery Culture,” which was discussed to some extent by the member3 of the grange. Mrs. Payne read a poetical selection. Under the good of the order appropriate remarks were made by Mrs. Anderson, Miss Ellin and Messrs. Jos. Ager and A. L. Ray. Resolu- tions were adopted expressing the loss which the community sustained by the death of Mr. Jos. Hollidge. Mr. and Mrs. James Enos Rey end Mr. G. N. Perkins Were appointed as a committze of three to visit the Chillum public school and report its progress at the next meeting of the grange. Gardeners in the vicinity report a great shortege of crops on account of the con- tinued drouth. This section has scarcely had a good rain since harvest season, and the celery growing is only kept alive by constant watering. The trustees of the Maryland Agricul- tural College held their regular quarterly meeting yesterday, with Wilmot Johnson im the chair. Those present were Chas. H. Stanley, Charles B. Colvert, J. P. Silver, Allen Dodge, L. Lake and State Senator Siebert. President Silvester of the college made a report, showing a healthful condi- tion of affairs. There are 114 scholars en- rolled. He asked for further equipments in the new departments of civil and mechanical engineering. Committees from the board visited these new departments, and expressed themselves as being much Pleased with ‘their appearance. The trus- tees visited the experiment station, and authorized the erection of a stable for the @ccommodation of twenty cows, for fur- nishing milk with which to carry on ex- Feriments at the dairy. President Silves- ter gave the trustees a practical illustra- tion of the good products of the farm and tke college by providing for them an ex- cellent repast. Mrs. John G. The Cleveland and Hurst Democratic Club announce a grand rally to occur at the opera house Wednesday even‘ng. The announcement of the sudden death of Mr. George M. Hoblitzell in Washington, who was a frequent vis'tor here at the home of J. K. Upton, his stepfather, was a great shock to the many friends he had made in this vicinity. He suffered from a light at- tack of malarial fever. No danger was ap- prehended, but a sudden change resulted fatally. He leaves a young widow, daughter of Col. Moore of Winchester, Va., and an infant son. At the Methodist Church South this morn- ing the funeral of Master Uriah Briggs was largely attended. Interment was in Forest Oak cemetery. Rev. L. L. Lloyd officiate]. Officer of Registration John E. Clagett completed his October sitting today. Fort: nine voters were regis@ered, eighteen stru. off and fifteengtransferred, making a n gain of sixteen, which, including the gain of nine at the September sitting, gives a total increase of twenty-five. There are 598 voters now in the district. Thursday evening the Gaithersburg Lodze of Good Templars received two persons to membersh‘p, and had a fraternal visit from Prof. Vernon D. Watkins of Clagettsville Lodge, who was highly entertained with vocal and instrumental music. Rev. L. L. Lioyd and Mr. E. Wilson Waiker ave this week been in attendance upon the Baltimore district conference at Arlingion, Baltimore county. They were representa- tives from the M. E. Church South of this town. Mr. Walker, who was recommended by the quarterly conference here, at the conference passed sat!sfactory examinations and was licensed to preach. The Laurel Democratic Club met at its rooms in Conway's Hall last night. A large number of the club members were present. The president announced that the following gentlemen had been placed on the commit- tee on arrangements for the meeting to be held here: Barnes Compton, Stephen Gam- brill, Charles H. Stanley, John Padgett, G. W. Waters, W. H. Owens, M. F. Peake, President T. M. Baldwin and Secretary E. M. Flannery. The president also announced that the date of the meeting had been chang- ed from October 19 to October 31, in order that the candidates could be present. It is the intention of the committee to give a large supper on the afternoon of the 31st in a tent which will hold 1,500, the supper to take up between two and three hours. Speeches will ke made in the afternoon and night by Mr. John E. Hurst, candidate for governor, Mr. Marion DeK. Smith, candidate for controller, Mr. Charles C. Crothers, can- didate for attorney general, Senator A. P. Gorman, ex-Senator M. C. Butler of South Carolina, and candidates on the county ticket. The principal speakers will address the meeting at night in the Academy of Music. A parade of mounted horsemen from Laurel, lower Prince George's, How- ard, Anne Arundel and Montgomery will escort the speakers from the depot to the place of meeting. The Interstate Demo- cratic League of Washington has signified its intention of sending a large number of the members of the league to Laurel that day on a special train. Mr. M. F. Peake at the meeting read resolutions from the Interstate League of Washington indorsing the Maryland candidates. A reference to Senator Gorman, as the presidential candi- date of 1896 was greeted with. tremendous applause. The regular weekly meeting of the club will be held tonight. Laurel Wreath Lodge, No. 149, A. F. and A. M., will hold a fair and festival at the new Masonic Hall next Tuesday, Wednes day and Thursday nights. The committee on arrangements consist of Messrs. C. W. Bond, W. A. McClellan, D. M. Fisher, Jos. R. Wheeler, M. N. Gambrill and Arthur F. Nicholson. — BROOKLAND. The foundation of the addition to the school building is progressing rapidly, and the contractor says he wili be ready to lay the brick next week. Tomorrow will be communion Sunday at the Methodist Episcopal {hurch. Every- thing has been got in readif™ss for this oc- vasion. The new pews and pulpit, which arrived this week, will be put in, and the new church will present a fine appearance. Miss Elanche Gudgin will lead the Brook- land Chapter of the Epworth League to- morrow evening. Her subject will be “What Made the Difference?” The people of Brookland will be interest- ed to hear of the marriage of Miss Bell Perkins, sister of Mrs. R. Ridgway, and Mr. Joseph Ridgway, Mr. Robert Ridgway’s brother, which took place lately in Chicago. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Ridgway have taken up their residence in Iowa. Judge Wm. C. Robinson, professor of law at the university, has gone north on a short visit. He will return about the mid- dle of next week. The reading room of the Brookland Guild has been changed to the room in the Town Hall on the Bunker Hill road, lately va- cated by Mrs. Lee. Miss Lillie Schwier will probably return next week from Bellview, Md., where she has been visiting her grandparents. —_—_——>— HERNDON. Mr. Jacob Laonhardt, who has been in the state of Washington for the last five years, and Mr. Will Bready, who has been spending several months in Colorado and New Mexico, arrived home Tuesday. Mr. Isaiah Bready has sold to Mr. R. Bradshaw a village lot on Elden street, adjoining the Episcopal Church lot. Mr. Geo. A. Williams has sold Mr. A. M. Mullen the small house near his residence, on the corner of Elden and Spring streets, and a lot on Elden street, with 60 feet frontage. ————o— BRANDY STATION. An unusually large shipment of live stock was made this week from the Brandy sta- tion cattle yards to the Baltimore mar- kets. A wedding attracting much attention in the vicinity is that of Miss Nannie C. Green of Culpeper and Dr. William Grant of Denver, Col., which is to take place at Green Lawn, Culpeper. The ceremony will be quietly performed on account of the recent death of Mrs. Green’s brother, Mar- shal McDonald, United States fish commis- sioner. The “uture residence of Dr. and Mrs. Grant will be in Denver. Culpeper, having the water works now in sight, is agitating the project of rais- ing a volunteer fire department. ' AUCTION SALES.
