Populists Will Present a Candidate for the Legislature—Other Mir+ rorings of a Busy Town. Mr. Wm. Oates of Philadelphia, an ex- pert on gas housegconstruction, arrived in this city yesterday and went to work on the preparations necessary for the rebuiki- ing of the three old benches in the city gas works, which have been burned out. ‘The benches contain fifteen retorts, and the work ot rebuilding them will take some weeks. Wien it is completed the gas works will then be in thorough order, and will have capacity enough to keep up with the increase in the consumption of gas for sev- eral years to come. Another Legislative Candidate. It is unjerstood that Mr. Frank Harper, the chairman of the populist party in this city, will be a candidate for the house of delegates. This will make three candidates already announced—Colerran, the colored independent candidate; the democratic can- didate, who will be nominated tomorrow, and Mr. Harper, the populist candidate. The republicans have not yet announ cne, and it is not supposed that they do 80. Union Mission in New Quarters. The Union Mission, which has been hold- ing services in a tent on the old fair grounds for the past six weeks, has fitted up a hall at No. 1210 King street, where It will continue to hold meetings nightly. A special progrem of sacred sor.g has been prepared for this week. Disorderly Armed With Weapons. Last night at about 9:30 the cries of “Po- lice! Police!” could be heard in the neigh- borhood of the local depot. It appears that two young white men, named Frank Gil- man and George Johnson, had gone into the eating house of Ben Lucas, colored, who keeps just opposite the depot, hunting for a man who had struck one of them. They became very disorderly, and, upon being ordered to get out of the place, one of them drew a revolver and said that no one there could put them out. The officers were telephoned for, and Officers Jones, Dean and Wilkerson responded, and took the men to the station house. This morn- ing Mayor Thompson fined them $20 cach under the city ordinance for carrying con- cealed weapons, whereupon the prisoners nounced that they would carry the case to the corporation court. Police Court Cases. Mayor Thompson this morning disposed of the following cases: Sarah Alexander, colored, charged with escaping from the work house, had thirty days added to her original sentence; Ella Lee, colored, charged with disorderly conduct, dismissed; Harry Johnson, colored, charged with an assault on George Anderson, colored, fined $1. Personal and General Notes. Rev. F. T. Benson of the Methodist | Church entertained the members of his con- sregation at the parsonage last night. The October term, which is a grand jury term, of the corporation court will begin Monday. City Engineer Dunn has temporarily em- ployed Mr. Lewis Kemper as an assistant in ee place made vacant by the removal of W. B. Dobie. Mr, Harry Callan left yesterday evening for the exposition in Atlanta. Mr. and Mrs. S. Lee-Ledman have return- ed from their wedding trip. They will make this city their future home. Mr. John Craven is quite sick at home with malarial fever. Alexandria council of the Jr. O. W. A. M. held a regular meeting last night, and con- ferred degrees upon several candidates. The employes of the water works were en- gaged yesterday in repairing the leaking cut-offs to the water pipes in different parts of the city. It Is reported that the first ice of the sea- son formed in exposed places last night. This is the first time that ice has formed this early in the season for a number of years. The white jeachers of the public schools have been requested to meet at Peabody Hall tonight at 7:30 o'clock, to reorganize the class of methods. The schooner French Smoot was sold at public auction yesterday by Messrs. O'Neil and Lunt for Mr. Thos. Ballinger, and was purchased by Mr. W. Rohde of Washington for $725. The committee on streets considered last night the communication from the Washing- ton Southern railway, asking permission to lay double tracks on Fayette street. Col. Lewis C. Barley has named the fol- lowing delegates to the convention tomor- row: Messrs. F. H. Marbury, Saml. G. Brent, Frank Price, C. C. Carlin, G. W. Bontz, Henry Strauss, Harry Yohe, T. L. Cockrell and Leonard Marbury. A large crowd attended the dedication of the New Grace Church parsonage last night. A short prayer service was held in the church, after which the congregation visited the parsonage. Little Mabel Paige and her company of players have been playing at the Opera House all this week to fair-sized audiences, —— Murdered Her Aged Mother. Mrs. Mary Knight, aged forty-three, mur- dered her mother, Mrs. Catherine Hart, ugel sixty-four, at Dayton, Ohio, last n’ght. Both women were drunk and quar- reling, and Mrs. Knight knocked her moth- er down with a picce of iron; then, picking up a chair, beat her over the bend. mash- ig her skull and braining her. Johnson Orr, one of the wealthiest farm- ers in Union county, Ind., was instantly k'lled at a crossing yesterday by a Cincin- nati, Hamilton and Indianapolis train.
