A week of repose since the great demo- cratic primary battle in this county serves te show pretty genera) acquiescence in the result. The county ticket having been nom- inated and delegates appointed to the state and judicial conventions, all eyes are now turned toward Baltimor2, and the result of the state convertion in that city Wednes- day next is eagerly discussed. Mr. Spencer C. Jones, one of the leading aspirants for the nomiration for governor, being a resi- dent of this place, of course, lends addi- tional interest to the situation. Mr. Jones himself dees not appear to be at all excited about the matter, hut passes about as usu- al in the pursuit 9f business or in easy con- versation with his friends. The latest re- port from headquarters that the “new as- sessment” question was to be made the main issue in the next campaign leads many to suppose that Mr. Hayes, the re- ted father and for several years the champion of the new assessment cause, would be selected as the standard bearer in the rext cortest. When it is remem- bered that the present state managers have had full control of the state legisla- tion for many years, and have at each re- curring election made the same promises that they are making now, it is not con- sidered wonderful that a large proportion of the members of thet party in this coun- ty look with distrust upon the professions of the leaders at this time. So far as the people of this county are concerned, there is no doubt but that a large majority of them, without regard to party, are in fa- vor of a fair and just reaseessment, but at the same time they are opposed ‘to sad- dling additional taxes upon the people to pay the salaries of assessors, appointed to pay political debts and not in consideration of their fitness for the work. This appears to be the general sentiment among the solid business men and farmers in this sec- tion. The recular quarterly meeting of Mont- gomery County Grenge took place at Browningsville Thursday, the proceedings being of more than usual interest. The forenoon session was devoted to the busi- ness of the order, and in the afternoon a public meetirg was held in an adjacent grove, which was attended by an audience of over 500 persons. Addresses were deliv- | Pincaun, balance in ered by Prcfs. Robinson and Patterson of the Marylend Agricultural College, Mr. C. R. Hartshcrne, Rev. J. W. Steele and others. He will return by way of London, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Dublin, and expects to reach New York cn the steamer Majestic in Sep- tember. Mrs. Trundle, wife of Mr. Wm. B. A game of base hall between the Wash- ington College boys and the Athletic club came off at the fair grounds Thursday evening. At the close of the sixth inning the game was stopped by rain, the score standing 22 to 1 in favor of the home team. A game will be played this afternoon on the same grounds between the Annapolis team and the Athletics, which game will be fol- lowed by one between the Relay club and the home team. . Mrs. J. F. Kelchrer of Pennsylvania 's a guest at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. John H. Kelchner at this place. Considerable excitement and alarm was created in the neighborhcod of Unity, a few days ago, by the appearance of a mad dog, which. after biting several other dogs, made its way to the premises of Mr. James Howse, where a number of hogs and other animals were attacked. The dog was final- ly killed by Mr. Howse. Great excitement was created here last night about 10 o'clock by fire, which origi- nated In the large store of D. H. Warfield, in the western section of town. The cause of the fire was the explosion of a coal oil lamp, the blazing contents being scattered over a lot of goods and setting fire to them. An alarm was at once given, and In a few minutes there was a large crowd in attend- ance, and the flames were extinguished be- fore gaining much headway. Mr. Warficid and one of hls clerks were considerably scorched in their efforts to subdue the flames. A considerable amount of goois was damaged by the fire and water, but the entire loss is not yet known. —— BRIGHTWOOD.
