The story of trouble on the Raleigh, now at anchor in Boston harbor, was today explicitly denied by the officer of the deck, who spoke for Capt. Miller, who was ashore when an Associated Press reporter boarded the craft. As a proof of his assertion, the officer ‘stated that the cadets who have not yet graduated from the academy have been in charge of the deck since the cruiser came to Boston, and if there were serious treuble the regular officers would certainly be on duty. It is true that the men were not paid off yesterday, the schedule date of wage pay~ ment. The reason for this was that there is much work to be done aboard, such as coaling, ete., and the probable dissipation of the men, were they paid, might greatly retard the work. The complaint of the men that they were overworked was also denied. The men who had shore leave last night reported = time today, with a tah dozen excep- tions. “They may have Geserted.” said the of- ficer, “or they may be too drunk to come back now. I do not expect mere than the usval number of desertions that oecur when a ship reaches port after many months at sea. 5 The story of a suicide, resulting from bad trectment, is based upon the death of one Straw, a landsman, who attempted to swim ashore from the Raleigh one night abcut six weeks ago as she lay in Havana harbor. He was swept away by a cursent. He did not belong to the boat, but wag simply doing a few days’ work on her. ——_~+e-. A MAD HORSE, Wonderful Story of an Escape iu Lucknow. From the Youths’ Companion. . It is exciting when the hunted tiger turns and charges the hunter, and he re- allzes that unless his bullet proves to be fatal he will be a dead man. But no charge of tiger or of grizzly bear was ever 80 ex- citing as the rush of a mad horse upon an English army surgeon in the streets of Lucknow. The surgeon, Dr. Knighton, was driving with a friend in a gig to visit a palace. To his astcnishment the streets were deserted, save by two or three per- sons, who were running as if for their lives, Suddenly an agonizing yell broke the still- ness. As the gig spun around a corner the mare stopped with an abruptness that al- most threw the two men into the street. In the middie of the road was the mangled body of a woman. Steerlng the mare clear of the bloody heap, the surgeon drove on, amazed to see that every house appeared to be uninhab- ited. Presently he spied a man standing on a housetop, shading his eyes with one hand and gazing intently up the street. Pulling the mare up, the surgeon shouted to him: “What's the matter?” “The man eater is loose! Look out, sa- hibs! He's mad toda: The surgeon had heard of a savage horse, belonging to a trooper of the King of Oude, and of the nickname of “Kunewalleh,” or the man eater, given to him because he had killed many men. As the surgeon hesitated for a moment, the man on the housetop shricked: Take “He is coming! care, sahibs, take cai Following the man’s directing hand, the surgeon saw far up the road a large bay horse, shaking a white bundle in his mouth, It was a native child the brute had seized by its shirt. Catching sight of the gig, the mad horse dropped the child and fu- riously rushed toward it. The terrified mare was almost unmanage- able, but she was turned about—the sur- geon never could tell how—and went tear- ing at a mad gallop down the road. The iron hoofs of the man eater were heard clattering behind. The surgeon looked over his shoulder. The glance showed him ‘that unless he could drive into a yard, not far off, there was no hope of escaping the attack of the furious animal. Its gates were ordinarily closed, but a streak of light shining between him and them suggested that they might be ajar. They were, @nd the mare's head almost touched them as he stopped. Jumping out, the surgecn flung himself against both gates. They swung back. Catching the mare -by the bit, he dragged the gig into the yard. As he slammed the gates back, and their heavy, bolt dropped into its sock- et, the man eater came thundering up. With head and cheeks covered with bl he glanced through the iron railing. Cocked ears, distended nostrils and glaring eye- balis showed the ferocity of the baffled monster. The mare shivered as with a cold, though the sweat streamed off her coat. The man eater stood for several minutes glaring thfough the bars, and then began to walk round and round the yard to fini an opening. At last satisfied that he could not get in, he turned, rattled his fron heels against the bars, ard, with his head and tall erect, galloped down the road. —_—_-_ e+ = Listened to His Funeral Sermo: J. H. Robbins of Millersburg, Ind., died before the funeral escort had returned from the burial of his wife. Mr. Robbins had expressed the determination to die as soon as his wife should have passed away, and he requested that his funeral sermon should be preached at the same time as that of his wife. His wishes were gratified, and the unusual incident of a: man listen- ing to his own funeral discourse was Wit- nessed by those present. The double funeral sermon was delivered by the Rev, S. H. Stolles of the Atlanta Methodist Episcopal Church. see, Unensy Cannibals. ‘The Seris Indians, the cannibalistic tribe that occupies Tiburon Island, near Hermo- sello, Mexico, are again becoming trouble- some, and the ranchmen along the coast in the state of Sonora, near the island, fear an attack. A party of the Indians made an attack on the ranch of Pascual Encinas a few days ago, but were driven off by the ranch employes. The ranchmen have ap- pealed to the authorities for protection. ‘ —s Daniel and Crockett Whidden, — were killed at a cedar camp near Brooks- ville, Fla., as the result of a feud. He is coming!
