One of the most remarkable accidents, the particulars of which have just come to light, occurred about three miles south of Anacostia Thursday evening. A colored man named William Bewie and his wife, who live in Washington, had gone to visit some friends in that neighborhood, and dur- ing the Gay the entire party, it is said, arank considerably of liquor. At night it was determined to have an exhibition of ftre- works. but none of those. present were in any conditio# to handle them. Several tried, however, to do so, and were badly burned. After this had gone on for several hours, Bowie produced a Jarge revolver and began firing it off. Only a few shots had been Gischarged, however, when the chamber of the weapon became disarranged, and the pistol was prematurely discharged, the 1 passing through Bowle’s hand, and, strange as it may seem, passed through his wife's upper lip, although she was standing some distance away, knocked out elght of her teeth, split her tongue for a third of its length, after which she swallowed the bullet. Dr. Ty D. Mudd of Anacostia, who was sent for, rendered surgical aid, efter Which the injured parties were taken home. Bowie is able to be about again, but his wife is in a serious condition. Mrs. W. G. Davenport, who ts taking a great deal of interest in making the Salt Water Home fer Children at Colonial each a success, and has spent much time there recently, was at her home in Ana- ccstia for a few days this week, but has again gone to Colonial Beach. Mrs. Daven- Port says: “The home has already been of much service to the poor children for whose Tenefit it was intended, but the lady man- agers are much cramped for many neces- sary articles. The buildings are still in en unfinished state. Tne smaller one has been made comfortable, and is occupied. The other is being rapidly covered in, and in two or three weeks can be filled, as it probably will be, with happy children and their worn out mothers. Mrs. Davenport says further: “If every citizen would send the ladies the price of one cigar, the home would not want for support, and a great blessing would be conferred on those who need. Two faithful nurses, who have had long experience. have heen secured.” ‘The semi-annual installation of officers of Mineola Tribe, No. 14, Improved Order of Red Men of Anacostia, took place last night, at Masonie Hail, and was conducted ‘at Sachem Jam E. As the artist devotes much of his attention to marine views and Studies, a louse boat has been added to his artistic equipment.
