IN MUSICAL CIRCLES A Washington Baritone’s Success in Opera on the Other Side. ° anges in Church Choirs Like= Many C ly Next Fall—Other items of General Interest, In a letter received here from Mr. Homer Lind, the young baritone of this city, he says he is now at Kissingen, where he ts taking the waters and baths and where he will remain until the 15th instant. Then he will return to Frankfort, and from there he will go to London to commence rehearsals with the Carl Rosa Opera Com- pany. The season will besin in Dublin with Mendelssohn’s one-act opera, “Son and Stranger,” which will be given for the first time in English, and “Hansel and " a very pretty one-act light opera. Mr. Lind will sing the part of Tonio in “I Pagiiacci” for-the first time in Dublin, and he is now studying quite hard, even though he fs supposed to be resting. Last mcnth he sang in a concert given at Kis- singen for the benefit of the poor, which was attended by the Queen of Hanover, the Princess of Hanover and the Duchess of Cumberland, besides other Russian and . He says he hopes next year to be able to visit his native city, which still holds the warmest place in his heart. The church choirs have now practically corcluded their work for the year, and most of the singers will soon go out of town for a rest. It is likely that there will be several changes when the choirs re- sume in the fall. Whether those churches which have recently abandoned their choirs and adopted congregational singing, under the guidance of a precentor, will be satis- fied with the experiment, or whether they will again recall the voices that were heard with pleasure for so many years fs a _mat- ter for future determination. Those churches which have the best choirs usvally look upon them as a business in- vestment. Many people without strong re- {giols attachments, but with the church- going habit, who are fond of music, will naturally attend service where they can hear the best, music, and thus swell the congregation and increase the offerings in the plate. That a good choir does have a drawing effect it is sfuted that at one of the churches which not long ago did away with an excellent quartet choir the attend- ance has fallen off at least one-half. This has set the trustees to thinking, and it is understood that a choir will he re-engaged in the fall, if the means to pay it can be made clear. “Miss Harriet Whiting, the contralto, fs here spending the summer, and will prob- mence her work in the fail. She has made an exe reputation in BoSton and throughout New England, both in church and concert. Her mutny friends here are gratified at her success, for they know ft ts based upon genuine merit, Only once this season has Miss Whiting been heard in concert here, und the breadth and rich- ness of her voice and her artistic method was the source of much pleasure. It is stated that Miss Cora Boyd will probably not Le heard at the Congrega- tional Church next season. Who will take her place in the quartet has not yet been determined. ‘Professor Josef Kaspar is spending hie summer at his cottage on the Blue Ridge Mountains at Snickers’ Gap.
