20 THE EVENING STAR, SATURDAY, JUNE 22, 1895—TWENTY PAGES. ON SHENANDOAH’S BANKS The President’s Troop Enjoying Life in the Historic Valley. The Soldiers Are Living on the Fat of the Land and Receiving Lots of — Hospitable Attention. Correspondence of The Evening Star. CAMP McCHESNEY, Front Royal, June 20, 1895. Captain Barbour and his men reached this place at about 6 o'clock p.m. yester- day, after an exceptionally long and dusty ride of about thirty-one miles. The troop- ers, however, stood it better than was ex- pected. The ride would have been almost without interest had it not happened that the troopers passed through one of the most picturesque sections of the Blue Ridge. After leaving Linden the troop en- tered Manassas Gap, where the scenery was grand and imposing. Happy creek Was crossed and recrossec several times, and the scenery, together with the fresh mountain air, probably more than any- thing else helped revive the tired troopers and enabled them to endure the otherwise wearisome journey. Along the road many cherry trees were ssed, and the cavalrymen tore off ranches at a time und ate the cherries as they rode along. From a distance to see each man of the troop carrying a waving branch in his hand must have given the impression that “Birnam Wood was com- ing to Dundee.” When camp was reached Captain Bar- bour and the whole command expressed themselves more than pleased by the excel- lent selection made by Lieutenant Rennie, and the captain stated that it was almost enough td make him forgive the ileuten- ant for hfs selection at Warrenton. The camp at present presents a very neat ap- Pearance. Several citizens of Front Royal visited the camp today and were much interested in the soutine of camp _ life. Among the visitors were Judge Cook and Mr. Downing. One of the most popular citizens of the town, Mr. Downing, who owns a large stock farm, sent a large lamb for the use of the troop, which was much appreciated by the troopers, who participated in the delightful dinner, prepared by Commissary Sergeant McChesney, with the lamb as a “piece de resistance.” Pleased With the Commissary. The efforts of Sergeant McChesney to cater successfully to the various appeties of the men_have so far been eminently successful. They have lived on an excel- lent bill of fare, and are daily sputting on extra flesh. Vegetables in sufficient quan- tity and variety have been served at every meal, and mi'k has been furnished in lav- ish manner to every one. Sergeant Mc- Chesney Is fortunate !n having for his side partner Quartermaster Sergeant Springman, who ts good natured enough to turn his hand or head to anything which promises to benefit the troop. One of the cooks is Private Burke, who, until recent- ly, was in company B, fourth United States cavalry. The other ts simply named “‘Char- le,” a colored gegtleman of renown, who comes very near Being about the best out- door cook the old soldiers in the command ever knew. The horses seem to be enjoy- ing the rest which has been given them. As for the men and the way they have taken advantage of their day of rest, it is only necessary to mention the fact that at 3:30.this afternoon nine of the troop reported themselves oa the ball field for the purpose of crossing bats with a picked nine from this place. Base Ball Extraordinary. Quite a number of the citizens were pres- ent to witness the game, and-it was re- marked that many of them were Front Royal's beautiful ladies. Although the score Is so large, the boys in blue put up a good article of ball until the beginning of the seventh inning, when the pitchers and everybody élse went completely to pieces, allowing their rivals to make eleven runs in th> last two innings. Smith, who was pitching for the troop up to that time, had pitched a really good game, and the score would have been much less had he been properly supported. The bright particular stars were Ruppert, who made two won- derful stops at short of hard-hit grounders, and got them to Poetzmann at first with professional-like accuracy; the latter man played a game at first which nobody could take exceptions to. Nat Carpenter played @ good game at second base, while Catcher Blush’s backstopping and throwing to sec- ond wus first-rate. The other troopers who Farticipated in the game were Ackton, third base; Stouffer, left field; Eubank, center field; Lesley, right field. The total score was: Front Royal, 26; President's Troop, 6. With a little practice the Prestdent’s Troop ought to be able te get away with almost any nine. It is expected that Winchester will be ae by the troop some time on Satur- AUCTION SALES. BUTURE DAYs.
