ATIKINSON VERY ILL, An Operation for Appendicitis Deter- mined Upon. A special from Atlanta, Ga. sent last night, says: Gov. W. Y. Atkinson lies at the point of death. Early this morning a case of appendicitis developed with him, and after suffering about five hours a phy- sician was sent for. All day long physi- cians have been at his bedside, hoping inst hope that an operation could be ensed with. Tonight, however, they fully determined that the usual sur- remedy must be resorted to. The governor's health has not been good for some time, and grave fears for his safety are felt by his wife and the members of his family. The physicians discover that twice before has he had attacks which must have been appendic, and that the de- bility of his system must be due to a great degree to this trouble. The governor has not been strong since his sensational cam- paign for the democratic nomination, when he made sometimes as many as five speeches a day and was on the railroads continually. Mrs. Atkinson, who was recently in a sanitarium in the north, is by his bedside, but she, too, fs in a weak physical cond! tion. A Too Playful Guardsm: Robt. Cummings, aged nineteen, and Lewis Carlin, aged twenty, members of the third regiment, N. G. P., were returning from a rifle range at Essington Saturday night, when Carlin playfully pointed his weapon at his companion. It was acci- dentally discharged. Cummings received the bullet in his forehead, dying shortly af- terward. Carlin was arrested. + e+ A Central American Union.
