20 THE EVENING STAR, SATURDAY, MAY 25, 1895-TWENTY PAGES. SUBURBAN NEWS ANACOSTIA, The lawn party which was held last night under the auspices of the memhers of the Ladies’ Aid Soclety of Garden Memorial Church at “Fair Lawn,” the beautiful home of Mr. C. R. Dodge, on Harrison street, was a decided success, a large num- ber of visitors being present. The hand- some grounds were decorated with flags and lighted Chinese lanterns, and the com- bination produced a very pretty effect. The ladies in charge were Mrs. Charles Robinson, Mrs. E. V. Dodge, Mrs. S. Swin- dells, Mrs. M. M. North, Mrs. M. P. Snell, Mrs. M. E. Simpson, Mrs. K. Bury, Mrs. S. E. Wiley, the Misses E. Doughty, Em- ma Dodge and Anna Dodge and Lottie Bury. Last night Mr. George French, a resident of Southeast Washington, walked into the Anacostia substation and informed Station Keeper Middleton that Policeman Green wanted Lim (French), and that as he had no time to bother with going to court he would leave $5 a3 collateral, which he did. A little later a Mr. Fickling called at_the Station and wanted to know from Officer Farquhar, who was temporarily in charge, how he should proceed to make a charge against Officer Green for having told a citizen to tie Fickling’s horse up, when the animel was an annoyance to the former. Subsequently it was developed that war- rants had been issued at the Police Court for both French and Fickling, on the charge of allowing their horses to run at large. As no entry had been made at the station of the issuance of a warrant against Pickling, and no one except Police- man Green, who had it, knew such a paper was in existence, Fickling was permitted to depart without being taken into custody. It is stated that at Twining City a horse belonging to one of the persons named broke into the stable of Mrs. Bury and not only damaged her property, but consumed a portion of feed which she had _ pur- chased for her own horse. There was an extremely small attend- ance at the meeting last night of the Ana- costia Citizens’ Association, and it was 9 o'clock, an hour after the time appointed for the proceedings to begin, before there was a quorum—seven members—present. During this period Rev. H. T. Stevenson entertained his five associates with an acccunt of the successful lecture course which he inaugurated at the Anacostia Baptist Church several months ago. About 9 o'clock President Linger called the meet- ing to order, and, after some discussion, appointed a committee, composed of Rev. H. T. Stevenson, J. W. Bartley, J. W. Tol- son, A. B. arden, B. Bryan and J. E. Minnix, to which the chair was added, to co-operate with the Associated Charities of Washington in the extension of the Pin- gree idea of helping the poor to Anacostia. Mr. Francis Baker of Dodgeville, Wis., who came to Anacostia some time ago on a visit to his daughter, Mrs. James H. Dony, and has been sick ever since his ar- rival, has become so ill that he is now una- ble to return home alone, and, as he desires to go there, his family physician has been sent for. The latter will reach Anacostia tonight, and both gentlemen will probably leave for Wisconsin early next week. Franx Bierer and Albert Guenther, charg- ed with being vagrants, were arrested last night and locked up in the Anacostia sub- station. The Moerlein Pleasure Club of Anacostia is arranging for their annual excursion. . eta Nar SANDY SPRING. Nine of the descendants of Robert Brooke of England, who settled in Maryland with his ten children in 1650, made a pilgrimage by way of Baliimore and the Chesapeake, on the 19h and 20th instants, to Della Brooke, near the mouth of the Patuxent, in St. Mary's county, where their ancestor landed. They found a substantial brick Ecuse built about a hundred years ago by scme of the name, and, on a high hill com- manding a magnificent view, they dis- covered the ruined walls of the original home, which was destroyed by fire. A musical and dramatic entertainment given at the Lyceum, with the laudable object of clearing the free library of debt, was entirely successful, the audience being large and highly appreciative of home talent. Mrs. Edward N. Bentley perhaps bore away the palm as Mrs. Ruggles, from “The Birds’ Christmas Carol,” training her nine chiidren in manners, but Miss Marian Farquhar as Sarah Maud was capital, tuo. These spirited scenes were followed by a play adapted from “Oliver Twist,” by Mrs. Bentley, in which she was Mrs. Corney and Mr. Bentley personated Mr. Bumble, to the amusement of all beholders. There was elso a chorus of male voices, led by John C. Bentley: a recitation by Miss Ellen H. Thomas, readings by Prof. Wm. ‘Taylor Thom and Mrs. E. P. Thomas, and a charming dialogue, in Quaker costume, by little Mary Bentley and Edith Spofford. The Hunting Club arranged a fishing ex- cursicn to the Falls of the Potomac on Menday and Tuesday for the benefit of Robert M. Hallowell and Charles Miller of St. Louis, who ar> spending a fortnight here. Owing to cold winds and frequent showers, very few bass were captured, but from all accounts the trip was enjoyable despite these drawbacks. Misses Anna and Helen Thomas gave a so- clable Thursday evening, which had some unusual features, as prizes were offered for the best hat trimmed by a young man, and for the best nails driven by a girl. Mor- timer O. Stabler and R. Bentley Thomas won first and second prizes as milline: and Miss Sallie P. Brooke as amate carpenter. Fred L. Thomas and William L. Brooxe each won a couple of gold me at the “spring sport lege. Miss Ellen Farquhar has been in Phila- delphia recently, Joseph T. Moore in New York, Misses Sarah T. Moore and Clara P. The Chillum Dramatic Club gave a highly successful entertainment at Grange Hall, Chillum, last Thursday evening for the benefit of the hall fund. The program con- sisted of choruses, tableaux, vocal solos, in- strumental music, a farce comedy and an cperetta. The cast of the farce comedy, “Which Will He Marry?” was composed of the following persors, who rendered their parts very creditably: Misses Mary Ellin, Gertie Abbott, Lily King, Margaret Ellin, Ccra Pumiphrey, Betty Wiltburger and Messrs. Fred Ellin and Charles King. The cperetta, “The Gipsy Festival,” was well rendered by Mrs. Wineburger, Misses Mary Ellin, Cora Pumphrey, Gertie Abbott, Gar- net Payne, Lity King, Carrie Gude and Messrs. Chas. King, Fred Ellin and Enos Ray, jr., Mrs. B. F. Joy and Mr. Charles Russeil also took part in the evening’s en- tertainment. A much-appreciated feature of the entertainment was a chorus com- posed of the following little girls: Carrie Gude, Alige and Clara Israel, Bessie King, Emma Russell, Lottie Heitmuller and Elsie Burgess. The costumes and scenic effects were excellent. A new mission Sunday school has been crganized at Landover. The officers are as follows: Munroe Shipley, superintendent; Mr. Metcalf, assistant superintendent; Miss Mary Wilson, secretary; Mrs. Holmes, treasurer; Mrs. Magruder Sheriff, librarian; Miss Magruder, organist. Closing exercises were held Friday by the public graded school of this town. The teachers, Prof. E. L. Amiss and Miss A. M. Myers, conducted the festivities, which wound up in serving a set-out to the schol- ars and taking leave of them for the sum- mer vacation. Thursday evening Gaithersburg Lodge, No. 217, 1, O. G. T., held an unusually in- teresting weekly meeting. One new mem- ber was initiated, arrangements made for a fraternal visitation of the district lodge officers, on June 20, and the regular quar- terly banquet was set and enjoyed until a late hour.
