Piano Agency. aplé-20tt ——__— SS — LAND OF THE KICKAPOOS, The Opening Proved to Be a Tame Affair. ‘The much-talked-of opening of the Kick- apoo Indian reservation to settlement Thursday was after all a rather tame affair. The intending settlers, who had come with the idea that several hundred square miles of land would be thrown open, discovered that but 70,000 acres were available, and that of this quantity probably one-half was fit for nothing—not even grazing. Then, too, it was notorious that the reservation swarmed with “sooners,” who would be ahead of those who waited for the official opening of the reservation. Because of these facts hundreds of boomers did not attempt to join in the rush across the border. ‘There was no disorder and no drunken- ness, and all the stories in circulation to the effect that bands of desperadoes would make trouble among the boomers proved to be entirely without foundation. ‘Every claim within five miles of Choc- taw has at least twenty-five claimants. There will be work for the courts in de- ciding these contests. 20+ Naval Orders. Ensign R. J. Hartung has been ordered to the Bennington. Lieut. D. P, Menifee has been detached from the Yorktown and ordered to the Petrel. Ensign G. W. Brown detached from the Petrel, ordered home and granted three months’ leave. Passed Assistant Engineer W. H. Chambers has been detacheg from the New York navy yard and ordered to the Columbian iron works, Baltimore, to inspect the machinery for the three new torpedo boats. Chaplain J. S. Wallace has been granted one year’s leave of absence, with permission to go abroad. : ’
