Jules Wiessner, who resides near Addi- son’s Chapel. was arraigned before Justice Carr yesterday on the charge of attempt- ing to assault Bailiff Barr while in dis- charge of his official duty, and fined $10 and costs. Sometime last January his father, Jolfn E. Wiessner, was tried by Justice Carr for trespassing on the prop- erty of Mra Godfrey, and judgment was given against him for $2.80. The defendant gave an order on his son Jules for the amount, which the latter declined to pay. About a week ago Bailiffs Barr and Hickey went to the old man’s place with a writ of execution, issued by Justice Carr, and pro- ceeded to levy upon his property. Wiess- ner snatched the writ from Barr’s hands and tore it into shreds. Barr then placed him under arrest, and was about to drive off with him, when his son, Jules, came to his rescue, with a heavy stick, with which he attempted to strike the officer on the head. Bailiff Hickey drew his revolver on him end prevented him from striking Barr. ‘The two Wiessners, according to the state- ment of the bailiffs, began to act like maniacs, and the officers seeing that they could not effect their arrest. without re- sorting to violent means left the place. They went there yesterday with a strong posse and arrested the younger Wiessner, but were unable to capture the old man, as he heard them approaching and fled from the place. Justice Carr says that the offi- cers will catch him today. Zhe Bas Eleu Literary Societ: terday afternoon at “Melrose. inal essay on Bulwer Lytton was read by Miss Isabel Irwin. Brown and Henry Gude. Dr. Latimer A. Etchison, who died in Washington last Wednesday, was an old resident of this county, and at ‘one time represented it in the legislature. He was from Piscataway, and was a prominent re- publican until the latter years of his life, When he went over to the democrats, and did considerable quiet, but effective, work for that party. He lived several years in this district. a ‘ALLS CHUR The meeting of the Conversational Club Tuesday night at the residence of Mr. A. E. Rowell was of an unusually interesting character. The subject of the evening, “Did Columbus Discover America,” ably handled m a paper prepared and read by Mrs. Moore, who evidently had given the matter considerable thought and study. The discussion which followed the reading of tke paper was animated and general, all present taking part. A number took the negative side of the question and gave good grounds for their belief, though the majority seemed unwilling to dispute the generally accepted historic facts regard- ing the matter. Among those present were Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Davenport, Mr. Mrs. J. H. Tibbetts, Mr. and Mrs. L. B. Parker, Mrs. Moore, Mrs. Chamblin, Miss Belle Davenport, Miss Sue Riddle,’ Prof. Robert Nourse, W. W. Kinsley, H.C. Evans. The next meeting of the club will be held at the residence of Mr. J. L. Davenport. Rev. P. C. Steele of Washington, repre- senting the Junior Christian Endeavor so- cieties bf that city, has taken charge of the summer home here established by these societies for the benefit of the poor ehildren belonging to the societies of the district. Ten children will be cared for at a time for the space of two weeks, when they will be returned and ten others sent out for an outing for the same length of time. : Miss Ethel Mankin of Herndon Is vis- iting her aunt, Mrs. G. W. Mankin. Miss Amelia Ives of Washington is yisit- ing friends here. The delegates who attended the recent session of the local union of the Chris- tlan Endeavor societies, which was held last Saturday at Arlington, will make a report of the convention to the society here on Sunday afternoon. —— -ALEXANDRIA COUNTY. A large meeting was held last night in the town hall, over the new brick school house, at Ballston, and was organized by the election of H. A. Whallon, president; Dr. B. F. Hance, E. T. Sisson and A. W. Nourse, vice presidents, and James E. Clements. The meeting was non-partisan, and speeches were made urging care in the selection of officers of the county at the coming election on the 2%d- instant by Chairman Whallon, R. G. Cunningham, A. P. Douglas and James 1. Clements. Speeches were also made by W. W. Doug- las and R. W. Johnston, aspirants for the office of commonwealth attorney for the county; W. C. Wibist and A. D. Torneyson, candidates for county treasurer; Christian Costello, candidate for sheriff, and A. G. Hayes, candidate for county supervisor. Addresses were also made on the issues of the county campaign by Mrs. W. Woody, Joseph Feids and Rev. Mr. Ford and Jas. Henry Robertson, colored. During the evez ing the pres verely criticised by many of the speakers for permitting the condition of affairs at Alexander Island and elsewhere, which has brought disgrace upon the county. BITTER AGAINST ENGLAND. Nicaragua’s Smart Money Will Be Paid Promptly. There Is no longer any doubt that Great Britain will receive her smart money on tire. The £15,000 sterling to be paid by Nicaragua to Great Britain has been raised et Managua by popvlar donations. Three German mercantile firms have given about £2,000, and the whole amount will be ready to be paid in London in a few days. The raising of the money, however, -has only ircreased popular feeling m Nicaragua against Great Britain, and the feeling ts now very bitter indced, more so, if pos- sible, than when the British landed at Cor- into. The general opinion seems to be that the Central American republics will form a combination, possibiy secret, against Great Britain, and that everything possible will be done to exclude British goods from Certral Ameri This feeling will prob- ably result in commercial gain to the United States. There is no doubt, however, that the action of the three German firm in subscribing so Hberally to the indemnity fund will prove a good stroke of business for them coe The Golden Cross. At the last regular meeting of Potomac Commandery, United Order of the Golden Gross, Noble Commander Fletcher S. Page presided. A letter from Trinity Command- ery arnounced the appointment of a com- mittee consisting of Dr. Geo. W. N. Custis, Jas. F. Harvey and Sackett Duryee to con- sider the expediency of amending the con- stitution of the Immediate Relief Fund Association, The commandery concurred in the request, an1 the noble commander appointed W. E. Slater, R. W. Burn- side and E Ashford the committee to represent Potomac Commandery. Supreme Representative Yates was present, and made an interesting speech on the rapid <ress of the order in the Distriet. The t of the Golden Cross litrary was. discussed by FR. W. The London Daily News publishes ad- vices received from its correspondent at Kars, saying that eight hundred of the survivors of the recent massacre in Arme- nia, who returned to their homes under promise of protection from the Turks, are being daily persecuted and tortured at the hands of the Turkish officials, supported by_gendarmes. For two months, it is added, the officials have tried to force the refugees to sign an address of thanks to the sultan, stating that they have met with only kindness at the hands of the troops; that all the troubles were caused by the Kurdish raid- ers, and that the sultan’s troops took no part in the slaughter. Those refusing to sign the address are beaten, put in chains and are suspended for hours by their feet. Women were outraged, children were shamefully treated, and the soldiers drag- ged women and girls forward and forced them to sign the address. ——-- see. Prolonging the Term.
