20 SSS ——EE—E———EeE THE EVENING STAR, SATURDAY, MAY 4,. 1895-TWENTY PAGES. SUBURBAN NEWS ANACOSTIA, ‘The committee on police, Rev. Hugh T. Btevenson, chairman, and Messrs. J. E. Minnix and J. R. Williams of the Anacos- ‘tia Citizens’ Association, have arranged to call on the District Commissioners Monday and present the necessity of there being better police and fire protection at Anacos- tia and vicinity. The committee will, it is Understood, lay before the Commissioners the important data read to the association at one of its meetings last month by Mr. Stevenson, much of which was published in The Star at the time. It is likely that the facts in erence to steps taken almost twenty-four years ago by the then legisla- ture of the District to erect a new station in Anacostia, waich were made the subject of an interesting speech by the late Sergt. Charles Kerby at the meeting of the asso- ciation Friday night last, will also be pre- sented to the Commissioners. A large number of letters from citizens of Anacostia and vicinity have been sent to the District Commissioners asking that Acting Sergt. W. T. Anderson shall be pro- moted to the sergeantcy made vacant by the death of the lamented Sergt. Kerby. A opular petition having the same purpose in view has béen in circulation for a day or two, and has been numerously signed. An interesting meeting of Mineola Tribe, No. 14, Improved Order of Red Men, held last night at Masonic Hall, Anacostia. Great Sachem W. C. White and Great Keeper of Records James E. Dement, both of the Grand Lodge of the District of Co- lumbia, ‘were present. There were several adoptions and also exemplification of the work in some of the degrees. Announce- ment was mude that arrangements have been completed for the annual excursion of the tribe in July. Mrs. Mary Clements Leavitt, the well- known temperance lecturer, who was en- gaged in carrying the polyglot petition for that cause around the world, gave an in- teresting acecunt of her experiences at the Anacostia M. E. Church Thursday night before a large audience. The meeting was under the auspices of the Woman’s Chris- tian Temperance Unign of Anacostia. Suit has been entered by Messrs. Jordan and Richardson, attorneys, before Justice Carroll W. Smith, against Mr. Herman Schrenfeld, formerly United States consul at Riga, Russi and now a resident of Washington, for $75.45, balance on an over- due note. Mr. H, A. Griswold has sold a house and lot in Griswold’s addition to Anacostia to Mr. George E. Coomes for $4,000. A petition has been numerously signed by those interested asking the District Com- missluners to have an estimate made for laying a brick pavement on both sides of Jackson street between Taylor and Fendall streets. Mr. William Dupnington of Washington street is reported to be seriously fll. Mr. Hiram Pitts, who has been quite ill with the grip, has entirely recovered. Mr. Pitts is in his ninety-third year, and for a time fears were entertained that his age would cause his malady to result fatally, but he is again in his usual health. Mr. Harry L. Kelly and Miss Mary Dor- sey, both of Anacostia, were married Mon- aay night by Rev. W. G. Davenport, rector of Emmanuel Protestant Episcopal Church, at the rectory on Maple avenue. Mr. and Mrs. Kelly are now on their wedding tour, = are expected to be at home in a few lay Earnest efforts are being made by many of the members of the Hillsdale A. M. EB. Church to retain the services of their for- mer pastor, Rev. F. M. Ovelton, for an- other year, and a letter from the official board of the church has been sent to Bish- op Gaines, the bishop who appointed Mr. Oveiton to another charge, asking him to reconsider the transfer of the latter and allow Mr. Ovelton to remain at Hilisdale. Bishop Gaines left for his home in Atlanta, Ga., immediately after the adjournment of the conference at Baltimore this week, and a definite reply is expected from him in a day or two. —_--—_—__ ROCKVILLE. Harvey, son of Mr. Wm. B. Selby of this place, who was some two weeks ago bitten by a dog supposed to be suffering from rabies, and who was taken to the Pasteur Institute iu New York for treatment, re- turned home on Tuesday. When first sub- Jected to the treatment the child was ren- dered very sick, but rallied in a short time, and befors he left was pronounced out of danger from the disease. The property of Miss Lizzle Edes Waring, situated in the western section of this town, and consisting of an elight-room dwelling house and loi, was sold to Mr. Stephen B. Lyddane for $1,805. : The contract for building an addition to the dwelling house of Mr. Edward F. Droop on Rockville Heights has been awarded to Chas. H. Viett of this town. ‘f'wo commodious rooms and a bath room will be added to the present building. The farm of Mary E. Orme in Gaithers- burg district, containing G1 3-4 acres, was on Saturday sold to Nathan J. Walker for $1,619.40. The Athletics of this place will play the Columbia base ball team of Washington at Fair Park on Wednesday afternoon next at 2:30 o'clock. Mr. Thomas T. Mullican and Miss Gertie B, Butt, beth of this county, were married at the Baptist parsonage, this place, on the 26th ultimo by Rev. L. R. Milbourne. A game of base ball between the George- town University Reseryes and the Athletic team of this place will be played at Fair Park on Saturday afternoon next at 2:30 o'clock. Mr. Samuel Riggs of R. this week an- nounces himself as a candidate for the office of state’s attorney, subject to the decision of the democratic primary elec- tion. The list of candidates for this office now numbers three, with the chances of a close and lively contest for the nomination. The Boyd's telephone stockholders will hold a meeting cn the 28th instant for the purpose of considering a proposition to in- crease the capital stock of the company to five hundred shares of a par value of $5. The caustic speech of Mr. Isidor Rayner delivered in Baltimore on Tuesday night arrouncing his candidacy for the govern- orskip ‘bf this state has caused quite a breeze in the ranks of the democracy of this county, and Is the subject of animated Gebate in political circles. The labored at- tempt to confine the issue of the next cam- paigh to the new assessment question ap- pears to be a magnificent failure. —_.__ KENSINGTON. D. Sweetser; constable, G@. W. Trickett; magistrates, Elisha Dyer, Sidney Shear and W. W. MeMillen; road commissioners, Harvey Cornwell, H. A. Crippen and Henry Beadley. = Mr. W. H. W. Moran of this place is about to start a newspaper in Manassas. The first number will be isued about the 15th of this month. The paper will be irdependent in politics, with probably a strong leaning toward free trade and state rights. Mr. Moran’s family will remain in Herndon till fall. At the meeting held in the Episcopal Church May 1 Bishop Whittle was present and confirmed the folloying named persons: Dr. B. B. and Mrs. Detwiler, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Celeman, Mrs. George F. Hines and Charles Dessay, who have lately purchased land near Ball- ston, and built handsome cottages thereon, have moved out from Washington and are rew living in them. Dr. Charles B. Mason has purchased six acres of land near Arlington, and will soon ecnimence building a fine residence upon the same. ‘Two sets of surveyors are busily locating the beds of the electric roads near the Vir- ginia end of the Aqueduct bridge, and are exyeriencing some difficulty. The road coming from Falls Church, superintended by Mr. R. Herry Phillip, desires to come one we and the Mt. Vernon road wants to come ancther, while the land owners near Rosslyn want to make both roads come in on the same track. Work has again stopped on the repair of the Aqueduct bridge. Many people of the county wish that the repair of this narrow, old and insufficient bridge would be aban- dcned entirely, and the government build a new, wide and commodious bridge there, capable of allowing electric roads to cross over from Virginia to the national capital. The widow and children of the late Presi- dent Garfield own a handsome tract of 100 acres of land south of Arlington, and near the residence of Mr. Frank Hume. A wealthy New York syndicate is negotiating to buy it and erect an extensive sanitarium thereon. od HYATTSVILLE. The ticket for town commissioners, which was nominated at the regularly called pri- mary meeting of the qualified voters of this town, held at Good Templars’ Hall last Wednesday night, has created some dis- satisfaction among the citizens, owing to the fact that Mr. Jas. A. Aman, who has served on the board of commissioners for a number of years, was defeated for renomi- nation. His friends say that they will plage him in the field as a candidate, and re-elect him, notwithstanding the action of the primary. Mr. Aman would have no doubt been renominated at the primary had not some of his friends been under the impression that he didn’t desire to again. beccme a candidate. Messrs. Walker and Emmons, who are on the regular ticket with Mr. F. H. Smith, the president of the present board of commissioners, seem to be objectionable to the manipulators of the municipal elections, who were conspicuous for their absence from the recent primary meeting, and strong efforts will be made to defeat them, but, in spite of this opposi- tion, they appear to have a good fighting shew, as they are both practical men, and have considerable following among the working class. There 1s no opposition to Mr. Smith, and his re-election is regarded as a certainty. The friends of Messrs. Walker and Emmons are very indignant at tke action of the leaders of the opposition. An enjoyable entertainment was given last Thursday night by Golden Chain Ledge, I. O. G. T., to a number of the friends of its members, at its new hall on Maryland avenue. A graceful address of welcome was made by Mr. H. O. Emmons, lodge deputy, and an interesting literary and musical program was rendered, after which refreshments were served. A committee has been appointed by the Citizens’ Improvement Association to wit- ness the test exhibition of the Handly Auto- tatic Gravity Fire Extinguisher which will be given by its agents, Messrs. Pear- son and Smith, on the Tinker lot in this pieee at 6:30 o'clock, next Monday even- ng. The Hyattsville Assembly gave a delight- ful dance last Thursday evening at the old Hyatt mansion on Bowie avenue. The charerones were Mrs. Arthur Carr, Mrs. L. H. Campbell and Mrs. H. C. Dobbs. Painter of Baltimore and Mrs. Wiiliam H. Jackson and children of Denver have engaged board for the sum- mer at Marden with the Misses Tyson.
