10 _————— THE EVENING STAR, WEDNESDAY, MAY 1, 1895-TWELVE PAGES. SUBURBAN NEWS ANACOSTIA. The Woman's Relief Corps, auxiliary to John A. Logan Post, No. 7, G. A. R., gave an entertainment, called ‘“‘a circulating H- brary,” in which many of the ladies who attended represented their favorite author, at Mason.c Hall, Anacostia, last night. A large audience was present. At the close of the exercises choice refreshments were served. The following program was ren- dered during the evening: Selection by the Anacostia Mandolin Club; character song, Master Howard Griffith, accompanied by Master Taylor Branson and Miss Lizzie Branson; recitation, Mr. Ogle; Indian club drill, Mr. Maurice Haines; solo, Miss Hessie Armstrong; fancy dance, Mortimer Fraser; recitation, Miss Breitbarth; violin solo, Taylor Branson; solo, Miss Mary McLean; comic song, Mr. Causell; recitation, Mr. Daniel Smithson; recitation, Mortimer Fraser. Smith, Mrs. Alice Si- monds, Mrs. Anna Anderson, Mrs. Lydia McGinnis, Mrs. Emily Frisbie and Mrs. George Girtman. < A large delegation of members of Electa Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star of Ana- costia, visited Ruth Chapter, O. E. 3., at Brightwood, by invitation, on Monday night, and were royally entertained. The program comprised, besides musical and literary exercises, a superb supper. Every- one present was delighted with the expe- rience of the evening. The members of Anacostia Lodge, No. 23, Knights of Pythias, who about two years ago removed their meeting place from Ana- costia to Washington, have decided to re- turn to Anacostia, and have leased comfort- able quarters in the Masonic Hall, where they will hold thelr meetings regularly hereafter. Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Prusheim, nee Redd, formerly of Anacostia, have returned from their wedding tour, and will In future re- Lan at No. 124 Virginia avenue southwest, Vashington. A business meeting of the Christian En- deavor Society of Garden Memorial Church was held last night. President Carlton E. Snell presided. Only routine business was transacted. - ‘The North Washington Rosebud Club, No. gave a concert and ball at Douglass Hall, illsdale, last night for the benefit of Mt. erare Baptist Church. Mrs. Mary Clement Leavitt, the “all- round-the-world” missionary of temperance, will lecture tomorrow night at the Anacos- tia M. E. Church before the Woman's Chris- tian Temperance Union of Anacostia. Much regret is felt among the members of the Hillsdale A. M. E. Church that their former pastor, Rev. F. M. Ovelton, has been transferred to another field of labor by Bishop Gaines, che presiding officer of the conference which has just closed its sessions at Baltimore. Mr. Ovelton will be eucceeded at Hillsdale by Rev. Mr. Gowens. —_——_—_ KENSINGTON. Not even the downpour of rain could keep a large audience from the benefit entertain- ment of the Noyes Library Monday even- ing, and those who came were amply re- paid by the entertainment afforded. The program, mainly carried out by clever ama- . teur talent from the city, was begun by Mrs. Lockwood's recitation of “The Ele- vator,” with “As His Mother Used to Do” for an encore. Miss Emma Morris and Miss Virgie Wake in a dialogue, “At the Polls,” made some laughable hits on wo- men in politics. Miss Virgie Wake then gave “Auntie Doleful.” This was followed by the pathetic recitation of “Hunchback Polly” by Mrs. Lockwood. The second part of the program was a comedy in one act, entitled “Which ig Which,” with the fol- Icwing cast of characters: Robert Capper, an artist much in debt, Mr. Charles N. Wake; Mr. Gargle, his uncle, Mr. Carl Mayer; Paddles, an oll and color man, Mr. T. E. Robertson; Annte, Miss Grace Rob- ertson; Bertha, Mrs. W. T. Robertson; Miss Mills, Miss Emma Morris. The play, which was full of bright dialogue and situations, was rendered by the performers in a man- ner which would have done credit to pro- fessionals. At its conclusion a life-size crayon portrait of Mr. B. H. Warner, which was the work of Miss Emma Morris, was Presented to the Library Association. . Mayor Martin, on behalf of the amusement committee, made a brief presentation speech, to which Dr. R. B. Detrick of the beard of directors of the library made a speech of acceptance. The work of the artist was greatly admired. It is the in- tention of the committee on entertainment to secure a companion picture of Mr. Crosby 8. Noyes, who joined with Mr. B. H. Warn- er in founding the library, as a testimony of the regard in which he is held at Ken- signton. Refreshments of cream and cake were served to those present. Rey. and Mrs. Robert M. Moore are spending a few days with friends at Boyd’s. A called meeting of the board of directors of the Noyes Library will be held Saturday evening, May 4, in the library room. Mrs. F. M. Fawcett and children have gone to Baltimore for a six weeks’ visit. Mr. John T. Freeman of Washington has Tented the residence of Mr. Curtice C. Mc- Cain for the summer. ~ Dr. William L. Lewis and family have moved in the house of Mrs. F. M. Fawcett on Fawcett avenue, while his own residence is being erected. The work on the Chevy Chase and Ken- sington electric railroad has been some- what delayed during the past week, owing to the severe storm. It is expected now that it will be finished and cars running by May 20. > FALLS CHURCH. William Thomas, colored, was brought from Washington Monday by Sergt. A. A. Soule and arraigned before Justice Riley, under a warrant charging him with stealing a horse from Mr. J. H. Jackson and a buggy from Mr. Lewis E. Oliver on the night of April 26. Thomas plead guilty to the charge and was committed to Jail to await the action of the grand jury and was taken to Fairfax C. H. Tuesday by the sergeant. The members and friends of the Con- gregational Church held a very pleasant soclable at the residence of Mrs. A. H. Raymond on Friday night. The Anthropological Society met at the Cosmos Club last night and listened to two interesting lectures. Major J. W. Powell discoursed on the relation between the ac- tion of the mind and the nervous system, making an interesting series of definitions, including sensation, perception, under- standing, and reflection. Sensation was termed the “integration of like properties,” and perception the “faculty of unifying unlike properties.” Dr. Frank Baker lectured with stereopti- con illustrations on the mechanism of sen- sation. In this lecture he followed the re- ception of impulses by the nerves that ramify with their filaments to the surface of the skin, and pointed out the varia- tions which appear in these nerves as -de- veloped in the eye, ear, nose and other portions of the body. ——_—_ Will Not Go to Kiel.
