Nase SATISFIED WITH THE SENATE. Mr. Elkins for Free Silver, but Not a White House Seeker. “Being a Senator is good enough for me,” said Senator S. B, Elkins, when asked at Los Angeles yesterday if there was any foundation for the statement recently sent ~ out from Cincinnati that the West Virginia Senator would be in the race for the presi- dency at the next republican convention. The dispatch based the Senator’s chances upon his extensive business connections in the East, which would make him strong in that section, and his silver ideas would at- tract the west. As to the latter Mr. Elkins sald: “I am ungualifiedly in favor of free silver, and shall work with the west in an endeavor to give it its proper place. As to how the question can be best handled, I can say nothing now. Put me down as a solid sil- ver man, though. “You can authoritatively say, however, that I am not a candidate for the presi- dency, for, as I said, I am perfectly satis- a rig representing West Virginia in the enate. Senator Elkins left for San Francisco in the afternoon. ———— WILLING TO DROP IT. ——— . How the President Regards Dr. Lan- sing and His Slander. As an outcome of the “apology” made by Dr. Lansing regarding his statements about President Cleveland a Boston citizen felt that some fellow-townsman ought to call upon Dr. Lansing and demand an apology for the apology he made. With this end in view an offer to demand an apology and proper reparation was warded to the President and the following reply has been received: WASHINGTON, D. C., April 10. While his so-called retraction is an ag- gravation of his original offense I am will, ing that his further punishment should be left to his conscience and the contempt of his neighbors and the American people. (Signed) GROVER CLEVELAND. Short Honeymoon. Two months ago a young .colored man named Ernest Patton and his sweetheart stood before a minister. The minister asked the necessary questions and each answered “I do.” They appeared in Judge Miller's court yesterday to tell of their separation and of an unpleasant meeting on the street Saturday night. According to the wife’s story her husband deserted her last Thurs- day, and when he met her on 7th street Saturday he went home with her. She left the house to go to the drug store and he foliowed her. When she reached N street near the mouth of Blagden’s alley she says he stabbed her in the back with a pen- knife. She denied that her husband had supported her, and called witnesses to prove the truth of the charge against him. The prisoner denied the charge, and claimed that his wife had spent his money for whisky. He thought she wanted to get rid of him. His mother-in-law appeared as a witness, and was questioned, and her evidence was even stronger than that of her daughter, There was a hole in her dress and wit- nesses appeared and told of the cut in her back and of having seen the blood. Judge Miller held him gullty of the charge and imposed a fine of $25 or sixty days. eS The Golden Cross.” At the last meeting of Goodwill Com- mandery, United Order of the Golden Cross, Noble Commander Walter E.
