10 Se SUBURBAN NEWS ANACOSTIA, It is understood that Messrs. R. B. Buck- ley, Julius W. Tolson and George F. Pyles, who were appointed a committee at the meeting of the Anacostia Citizens’ Asso- ciation Friday night last to urge the ques- tion of better mail service at Anacostia, will call on Second Assistant Postmaster General Neilson In a day or two in regard to the matter. The people of Anacostia are united on the question, and since the ap- earance of the article in The Star of yes- erday, where it was shown that Anacos- tla, which is in the District of Columbia, has poorer mail accommodations than Bethesda, that is across the line in Mary- land, they are looking forward with con- fidence to the time, not very remote, when they will enjoy free delivery also. A letter was received in Anacostia yes- terday from the setond assistant postmas- ter general, in which that official promised to give prompt attention to the petition from a number of the patrons of the Ana- costia office and an accompanying letter, which were filed Saturday, in which the Post Office Department was asked to im- prove the service there, both by giving one more mall each way daily, and also that a 9 p.m. daily collection from a letter box in Anacostia be ordered. e The ennual meeting of the Sunday School Society of the Congress Heights M. E. Church was held on Sunday afternoon and the following officers re-elected for the en- suing year: Superintendent, Mr. R. H. Jorden; assistant superintendent, Mr. D. E. Haines; secretary, Mrs. Anna MecGruder assistant secretary, Miss Fanny Littleford; treasurer, Mr. Wm. Jordan; librarians, Miss Fanny Littleford and Mr. William An- derson, A home and fcreign missionary so- ciety was organized, with Miss Emma Simpson, president, the other officers to be elected later. A corsecraticn meeting of the Christian Endeaver Society was held at night, and was led by Mr. Theodore Baldwin, assisted by Mrs. Stansbury. Mr. Charles Briggs, a member of the Colgate University Glee Club, preached on Sunday at the Hast Washington Heights Baptist Church, from the theme “Th eat Salvation.” -The members of this church are considering the advisability of leasing a tent for church purposes until next fall, by which time {i ts he a slight legal difficulty, which has will be satisfactorily adjusted, when the new structure can be erected without the danger of having any complicatior The Forest Lake Cemetery Company of East Washington Heights has been organ- ized and Mr. D.C. Fountain chosen presi- dent. The company has bought 140 acres of ground on Oxen Run road between the Suitland road and Pennsylvania avenue ex- tended, ard will improve the same at an expense of about $40,000. Work wiil be be- gun as soon as the weather will permit. Another antl-Green meeting has been called at the Hillsdale A. M. E. Church for Thursday night next, and Lawyer Jo‘n A. Moss, who ha; been the main disturbing element at the two previous meetings of the kind, has already signified his inten- tion to be present. The managers of the movement are at present disposed to admit Moss to the building and allow him. to speak for fifteen or twenty minutes, after which he will be expected to keep quiet for the remainder of the evening. Rev. F. M. Ovelton, pastor of the Hills- dale A. M. E. Church, said last evening that he expects to appear before the trial board of the police department tomorrow and prosecute charges against Sergt. Ker- by of the Anacostia substation for conauct unbecoming an officer and for neglect of duty. The charges have grown out of the alleged actions of Sergt. Kerby at the meeting at the Hillsdale A. M. In regard to the cpening of the new street, a letter was read from the attorney for the council, stating that application must be made to the county court for the appointment of commissioners. On motion of Ceuncilman Nowlan, it was voted to defer further ac- tion in the matter until the parties interest- ed should agree to pay the costs of further legal proceedings. S. J. Clark. After partaking of an elaborate supper, presided over by Miss Ida Palmer Topham and Howard L. Mcrrison, friends of the host, a delightful mvsical program was furnished by Messrs. E. W. Stone, Dr. Wm. Long, Wm. E. Green, members of the Georgetown Or- chestra, and Prof. Harry Wheaton Howard, pianist. Solos by the above named gentle men were highly appreciated. The first question discussed by the club was the “Mixing of Commercial Fertilizer,” it being one of great importance to the farmers present, as the present low prices of cereals have caused the problem of fer- tilizing to be one of vital interest. Prof. Henry W. Wiley, chemist of the United States laboratory, Agricultural Department, gave a clear talk on the subject. The next question discussed was the advisability ef the farmers to take steck or otherwise offer inducement in the pro- pcred Burnt Mills and Sandy Spring elce tric railroad.
