10 THE EVENING STAR, FRIDAY, MARCH 29, 1895—TWELVE PAGES. SUBURBAN NEWS ANACOSTIA, | Inspector Beavmont of the District health department has resumed his visits to Ana- costia, and was yesterday looking after the health not only of Anacostia, but also of Hillsdale, Garfield and the other towns this side of the river. The inspector again in- vestigated charges that the colored resi- dents cf Hillsdale were engaged in the bust- ness of hog raising, which is prohibited by law. A year ago Mr. Beaumont broke up over a hundred hog farms among the hills back around Hillsdale, and he has again commenced his war upon this menace to health. The gully on private ground on Washington street near Adams is to again receive attention, and an effort will be made to get either a sewer to run through this square to carry off the drainage which otherwise runs into this place and causes a cesspool, or the owner will be compelled to fill it up. ‘The citizens of Jefferson street extended are making an effort for a sewer on that thoroughfare, to extend from its present terminus near Adams street, to a point be- yond Taylor street. Numerous complaints have been received of standing water on ‘Taylor street, in this locality, and the only remedy advanced is a sewer. The matter will be brought before the attention of the Citizens’ Association at its next meeting. The efforts of the friends of Hunter Ware yesterday to accord him a Chris- tian burial were rewarded finally a few mo- ments before the time for the funeral by the appearance of Rev. Hugh T. Stevenson of the Anacostia Baptist Church, who read the church funeral service and delivered prayer. The funeral was one of the larg- est ever seen in Anacostia. = The reguiar Thursday evening prayer meetings at the Methodist and Presbyterian churches took place last evening. Mrs. E. V. Dedge, Mrs. M. M. North and several ladies, members of Electa Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, attended a re- ception given to the lady friends of Naval Lodge, F. A. A. M., in the hall of the lat- ter, Wednesday night. The committee on police appointed by the Anacostia Citizens’ Association is interest- ing itself in the welfare of the police of Anacostia, in efforts to procure a new sta- tion house. Considerable talk has been jade about locating the new station house vhen provided for In Hillsdale. In fact, the sentiment of this action in Anacostia is very pronounced,as the citizens claim rear- ly all arrests are made in Hillsdale and the hills of that vicinity. It has been stated, and publicly so, that the police depart- ment favor this project, and that it will be no distant day before the new station will be arranged and located in tat town. Miss Alice Reagan, the little daughter of Officer J. F. Reagan of the Anacostia po- lice force, was given a party last night by her parents, at their home, No. 37 Monroe street. In addition to a goodly number of the personal friends of Miss Alice, there were present the Misses Lila and Myrtle Dodge, May Armour, Mamie Goodwin, Messrs. Wilbur Dodge, Geo. H. Gray, jr., Walter Gray and Walter Hardisty. Dur- ing the evening a rfumber of stereopticon views were shown and refreshments were served. ————-__ BROOKLAND. Rev. J. K. Gilbert of the Baltimore M. E. Church South was a visitor at the Brook- land M. E. prayer meeting this week, and will preside at the services in the town hall next Sunday. Rev. Mr. Gilbert is the guest of Mr. B. E. Murray. Mrs. William Jones of the Bates road, who has been seriously ill with pneumonia, is reported better. Mr. Hosp and Mr. Frank Reis have been making extensive improvements to the residence of Mr. Bowen in South Brookland. The Brookland W. C. T. U. was called Prcmptly to order by the president at 2 p. m., with a large attendance of members present. Mrs. Scnwier, evangelical superin- tendent, conducted the devotional exercises, and Mrs. R. S. Wolfe led in prayer. Mrs. W. S. Daniels and Mrs. J. B. Lord, sr., were elected delegates to the district quarterly meeting at Gurley Memorial Chapel, April 3. with Mrs. I. S. Hollidge and Mrs. W. B. ‘Thomas as alternates. Very satisfactory reports were received from Mrs. G. B. Jcbnston, treasurer; Mrs. Rhine, superin- terdent of literature; Mrs. Hull,correspond- ing secretary, and Mrs. Schwier, evangelical superintendent. Brookland seems likely to attain its full quota of population very early this spring, as the few vacant houses are being rapidly rented and occupied. Mr. James E. Clark and family are about ane possession of their Michigan avenue cre. — HYATTSVILLE. Messrs. D. M. Nesbit, P. A. Scaggs and Wm. R. Baker, examiners appointed by the county commissioners to examine and re- port upon the advisability of opening a public road to connect the Riggs road with the Davis Mill road, met recently and went over the proposed route. The opening of this road is of great importance, as it will connect by a near route the villages of ‘Takoma and Chillum. Mr. Wm. R. McChesney of Chillum, who has been confined to kis home by sickness, has sufliciently recovered to be out. The county commissioners at a recent meeting increased the county tax to 85 cents on the $100. This increase was caus- ed by the extra heavy court expenses of last year and the additional appropriations for public school purposes, amounting to over $3,000. A valuable tract of land, situated near Forestville, containing ten acres, and own- ed by the late Emma Eaton, was recently sold to Mr. Richard G. Young at public auction for $57 per acre. Rev. John Chase, a local colored Metho- dist preacher, died at his home in Bladens- burg yesterday morning at 2 o'clock at the age of eighty-two years. The funeral will take place from the colored Methodist Church, in Bladensburg, at 2 o'clock to- morrow afternoon, and the remains will be interred in the colored Methodist burying ground near that village. —__——___ ROCKVILLE. In the circuit court on Wednesday, when the slander case of Aisquith vs. Owens was called for trial, it was found thai the two most important witnesses for the prosecution could not be found, and the trial has been pcstponed until the Novem- ber term. The report of Capt. Davis of the U. S. S. Montgomery upon his investigations in Honduras into the circumstances surround- ing the killing of the American, Renton, at Brewers Lagoon, is being carefully sifted by the officials. Capt. Davis made a most careful inquiry into all of the facts, and examined all of the witnesses who could be reached. The conclusion is that the Honduran government is properly charge- able with responsibility for the affair, and has been derelict in failing to take any steps whatever to ascertain and punish the perpetrators of the crime. Capt. Da- vis’ visit awakened the Honduran officials, and there is now a fair prospect that tardy justice will be secured at last. Capt. Da- vis found that the injury sustained by the Kenton estate amounts to about $35,000, and the Hcnduran government will be re- quested to reimburse the widow of Renton in this amount. It has already signified a disposition to do what is right in this mat- ter. THE JAPANESE TREATY. President Cleveland Signed the Proc- lamation on March 21. President Cleveland signed the proclama- tion of the new Japanese treaty on March 21, and the fact has just been made pub- lic at the State Department. The only charge made in the original treaty is the amendment made by the Senate and an- nounced at the time, allowing the treaty to be terminated on six months’ notice at any time after it goes into effect. Some question has arisen since the amendment was made as to whether by a misuse of language the Senate has not failed of its purpose, and had not really so worded the treaty that it could not be terminated until after it has been in effect twelve years. While the treaty as proclaimed shows some ambiguity, it is believed that the intent of the Senate has not been balked, and that an early termination is practicable if it shouid become desirable. + —_—_—_+2+____ Big Fire at St. Augustine. The northwestern portion of St. Augus- tine, Fla., was swept by fire yesterday af- terroon, destroying forty-nine residences and business houses, besides several smaller structures, entailing a loss of fully $100,000, with little insurance. A large portion of the residences destroyed were owned by poor people, and many families are home- less. Altogether the fire swept clear seven blecks, thickly covered with houses, some of them fine residences. The fire started in T. A. Master's blacksmith shop. The Ponce de Leon and other big hotels sent their fire equipments, and Col. Bainbridge sent both companies of the third artillery, United States regulars, to assist in fighting the fire. Many tourists at the hotel also rendered essistance. It seemed at one time as though a great part of the town must go, but by heroic efforts the flames were at last controlled. soo Venadito’s Commander Removed.
