THE EVENING STAR, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 5, 1894-TWELVE PAGES, SUBURBAN NEWS a ver BROOKLAND. The Ladies’ Aid Séciety of the Brookland ‘M. E. Church had a gala time at their an- niversary meeting at the home of Mrs. I. 8. Hollidge last evening. In the absence of the president, Mrs. Greene, the vice pres- ident, Mrs. Malone, conducted the business session very ably. After singing “Corona- tion,” Rev. Church Tabor read the Bivle lesson and offered a prayer appropriate to the occasion. Miss Minnie Gudgin was 1p- pointed secretary pro tem. in place of Mrs. Murray, who was absent, but sent her an- nual report, which was very interesting, showing that the society was organized November 22, 1803, with eight members, and has made large additions to its work- ing force since. December 7, 1808, the first meeting was held at the home of Mrs. Fisher. During the year the ladies had col- lected over $4 in funds, $27 of which had been expended for the purchase of a hand- some c¢mmunion set and table. [he re- port of the treasurer, Mrs. Hollidge, was very satisfactory, displaying a wise man- agement of finance. The election resulted in a reinstatement of the same officers— Mrs. J. S. P. Greene, president; Mrs. N. B. Malone, vice president; Mrs. B. E. Murray, secretary, and Mrs. I. S. Hollidge, treas- urer. Miss Blanche Gudgin, chairman cf the entertainment committee, presented an excellent program, each number of which was well received and enjoyed. Miss Ada Sweetman of Washingtcn gave an instru- mental solo; Miss Wood an amusing reci- tation, “How Girls Fish; Miss Rice, a cunning dissertation on “Babies; Master Louis Ohm, a vocal solo; Miss Helen Reale, @ recitation; Mr. J. W. Horner read a shar- acteristic “Drummer's Experience; Miss Sweetman rendered in excellent style some selections from “Wang; Miss Nannie Hol- lidge sang very prettily “Come, Buy My Flowers;” Miss Lrenerman recited “How a College Maiden Learned to Cook,” and received a hearty encore. The literary ef. forts closed with a chorus by the M. choir, after which the guests were invited to the dining room and served with an abundance of ice cream and excellent cuke. The Brookland Citizens’ Association will meet in the town hall on Friday evening next. Miss Hattie Cooper and her brother, Mr. Joseph Cooper, of Morristown, Tenn., are the guests of the Misses Gudgin of Uni- versity Heights. Dr. Emil Holub, the celebrated Austrian explorer, who has been visiting in Brookland, has carried out, at his own expense, twocf the largest and most successful exploring expeditions in South Africa, the first lasting seven years, the second four years, and is contemplating a third. His wife, an at- tractive and accompltshed young Vienn: lady, who was also a visitor to Brookland, accompanied her husband on his second expedition, sharing his dangers and hard- ships and securing for herself the distine- tion of being the first African lady ex- plorer. The M. E. cottage prayer meeting will be held this evening at the residence of Mr, J; 8. Hollidge, on Providence street. Kirig David Lodge, F. A. A. M., of Brook- land, last night elected the following cf- ficers to serve the ensuing Masonic year: William H. Stal worshipful master; J. Lewis Sherwood, senior warden; H. MeP. Woodward, junior warden; Dr. H. J. ren- rod, secretary; John B. Lord, sr., ¢reasurer (re-elected); trustees, John B. Lord, sr., and Dr. H. J. Penrod. Past Master Thomas G. Carmick, member of the Masonic board of relief; John H. Small, member of St. John’s Mite Society; proxies to Grand Lodge, C. H. Btz, William P. Armstrong and ‘Dr. Albert L. Jackson. The Brookland W. C. T. U. nold their an- nual election of officers tomorrow after- neon. St. Clement's Sewing Guild spent a pleas- ant time with Mrs. James Norton yester- fternoon. The next meeting will be H. H. Penrod next week. Sacer etal me ROCK VILL A letter from Miss Claudia White to her parents of this town says that Dr. J. B. Hartwell, formerly a missionary among the Chinese in San Francisco, and now restd- ing in northern China, ts lying critically il. His daughter, Miss Anna Hartwell of Canton, has been summoned to his bed- e. This youag lady spent the summer some years ago with Miss White in this town. Miss a is the eldest daughter of Rev. and Mrs. S. R. White of this plac and has been engaged in missionary work under the auspices of the Baptist ciety near Canton, China, for years. Mr. Harry F. Kidwell and Miss Lena M. Ogle, both of Washington, were mari here on the 3d instant by Rev. S. R. White. Previous to the adjournment of the cir- cuit court on Monday sentence was passed upon the following prisoners: Joseph Duf- fin, convicted of larceny, five years in the Maryland penitentiary; John Payne, con- victed of assault ith intent to rape, five years in the Maryland penitentiary. ol. Elijah V. White, a native of this county, now of Leesburg, Loudoun county, Va., Was married on Wednesday of last week to Miss Margaret Bayne, at her home, in Philadelphia. During the late war Col. White was in comgand of the thirty-fifth battalion of Virginia cavalry, made up principally of men from this county. Mr, John Heeter, a farmer, residing about four miles west of this place, while driv- ing home in his wagon a few nights ago, was accosted on the road by a negro maa, who demanded his money. The assailant being informed that he had no money, then demanded his watch. When invited to come alongside the wagon, the negro declined, and made a hasty retreat on the horse he was riding. Mr. Heeter was un- armed, not even having a stick with which to defend himself. Suspicion points to a party living In that neighborhood. At a meeting of the county commission- ers held here yesterday the following bills for work on the public roads were exam- ined, passed and ordered to be paid: First strict M. Price, $48.70: Cc. Ward, Second district—James S$. Carlin, Albert B. Thompson, $1.50. Third dis- 0, H. Larman, $4: dis- Ss M. Barnsle Th A 71; James M Geo. (bridge), $48.51. rict— Oliver T. Lawson will have to serve thirteen years and six months and Duffia and Payne five years each. : Sinee the fire on Tuesday night of last ek, when the residence of Mrs. Sarah s burned, there has been talk of sa public meeting for the purpose of organizing a fire company, and the pur- chase of the necessary apparatus for pro- tecting the town against similar disaster.
