The November term of the circuit court for this county commenced here yesterday, Associate Judge John T. Vinson on the bench. Shoruy after the calling of court the names of those summoned 1s jurors were read and the following persons were selected to serve as grand jurors: Josiah J. Hutton, foreman; E. P. Marlow, Edward G. Fisher, Amos W. Magruder, Bernard Monday, Jus, T. Allnutt, Charles F. Duvall, Robert Ulison, James B. Jones, James N. Barnesley, Wm. T. O. Glover, John T. Har- desty. Samuel W. Budd, Alexander H. Bean, Charles F. Townsend, Robert Ait- cherson, J. Collison White, James W. Har- riss, Allen A. Bowie, L. T. Walters, Benja- min N. Gott, Luther N. King, Lewis L. Sellman. A brief charge was delivered to the grand jury before retiring to their reom for consultation. A large portion of the day was consumed in calling over the docket and the assigrment of cases. On motion, Messrs. Alexander H. Bell of Washington and R. Dorsey Trundle of the county were admitted to practice at'the bar of this court. The petit jury for the term 1s composed of the following persons: John E. Ward, Wm. H. Buxton, George Butler, Philtp C. Dudrow, Wm. L. Aud, Aaron B. Hersberger, Jesse Hyatt, Wesley Carroll, Henry T. Mobley, Wm. W. Russell, Albert King, Henry C. Crown, Eli Bready, Wm. Rich, Stephen B. Balch, Jacob B. Ernst John E. Hill, John W. Whiteside, John Clagett, Wm. Luster, Zachariah G. Cooley, Wm. J. Lewis, Luther H. Young, Lawrence Hogan and Thomas Stewart. There are not a very large number of civil cases set for trial at this term, but the criminal docket is large and will consume a number of days. No criminal cases will be taken up until next week. As usual, a large number of persons who have been summoned to ap- pear before the grand jury were In at- teidance during the day. The news, which first reached here through The Star of. yesterday evening, that Hattersly W. Talbott would probably be appointed assoelate judge of tbe circuit court in place of Judge John T. Vinson, whose time expires by the age. limit in January next, has been the subject of much comment in political circles. Mr. Talbott is now state senator from this county, and should he receive the appoint- ment of judge from Governor Brown, it will necessitate the election of a new sena- tor. This would doubtless lead to another bitter fight in the primaries between the administration democrats and the “ring” forces, which might lead to the defeat of the judicial ticket at the next genera! elec- tion. During the congressional contest, clo: ed a week ago, a sort of truce was observ- ed, but it is generally understood that both sides are sleeping on their arms. A lasting peace between the two wings of the party ———s that has yet to be brought about. — SILVER SPRING. Among the handsome presents received was @ massive solid silver pitcher, salyer and goblets, presented by Mr. Gorsuch’s fellow employes in the service of the Baltimore and Ohio railway. Mr. and Mrs. Gorsuch left this morning on the 11 o'clock train for their wedding tour, which will be to New York, Philadel- phia, neighboring cities and Niagara Falls. Upon their return they will take up their residence in Baltimore. a Henry George's View. Henry George, the single tax advocate, was asked his opinion last night in Phila- delphia of the recent elections. “This glorious republican victory,” he said, laughing, as if he wanted to inclose “glorious republicans” in quotation marks, “will hasten the advent of free trade and a single tax.” “On what grounds do you draw such a conclusion 7" “The election showed that there cannot be two protectionist parties. The demo- cratic party must be one thing or the other if it wants to amount to anything. It must come out squarely on the {ssues and not dodge responsibility. So this contest has only cleared the atmosphere, and the lincs can now be drawn.” To Feed the Hennepin Canal.
