An address was delivered last evening be- fore the Temperance Society of the North Presbyterian Church by Dr. W. W. God- ding, superintendent of the Government Hospital for the Insane. He made a strong plea for the establishment in this city of an inebriate asylum, and spoke of the ef- forts he had made to induce Congress to take some action. He said that one of the burning questions of the day was the proper treatment of the inebriate. He referred to the mistake made by so many young men in supposing that alcohol is a food. When the evil which alcohol has wrought in the world is considered, said the lecturer, the conclusion is that if it is a nutriment then it Is fit only for devil's food. Referring to drunkenness as a disease, he said that it is a disease of which sin may have laid the foundation, but the pathological changes in the brain, the lecturer said, lies outside of the plane of moral accountability, and are in the nature of the wages of sin, rather than the sin itself. ——_ Ma Treatment of Women. At the men’s meeting yesterday afternoon at the Y. M. C. A. Hall Rev. Dr. McKim, the rector of Epiphany Church, delivéred a practical address on the subject of “Purity and Chivairy.” He condemned the double standard of morality that existed—loose for men and rigorous for women. He spoke of the extent of the social evil in this city and the number of women whose lives were blasted. The responsibility for this state of affairs, the speaker said, rested upon the male sex. He denied that from motives of health or any other motive there was a sufficient justification why men should de- base themselves. He pointed out the cor- rect ideal of life, which would be found in Jesus Christ. He urged that men should put an end to the Injustice to women, and expressed confidence that men, if they’ will, can cleanse the world of this awful blot. The Evils of Gambling. In the course of his sermon last evening at Foundry Church Rev. Dr. Brown, the pastor, spoke strongly of the evils of gam- bling. He expressed the opinion that the tendency of gambling, to alienate the heart, mind and soul from everything that built up character, was greater than that of drinking. It did its work quicker. The garbling habit, the preacher said, hardened the heart completely, made the person In- different and took him further from God. He condemned the idea that success was the result of luck, and he pointed out that, on the contrary, success was the product of labor and thought. Thomas Blannum, a young colored man, was arrested some days ago on a charge of cruelty to animals, and Judge Kimball sen- tenced him to the work house in default of fine. He was the driver of a brick cart, and while driving over the Long bridge the race horse “Larchmont” came in contact with his cart and was killed. Blannum’s em- ployer, Mr, Walker, ieceeded in getting Judge Kimball to grant a new trial, and the case was to have been tried today, but the unfortunate driver was unable to appear for trial because death had claimed him and called him before a higher court. He dropped dead in the work house yesterday, and the case js therefore ended. LATE SPORTING NEWS. Basket Ball League. In the Libby cup chess tournament some interesting changes have occurred <eom | the weck. The most notable of these Capt. O’Farrell’s second victory over Mr. Wright, in a game full of fine situations and imirably conducted on both sides. The battle was watched with close atten- tion by the spectators, who, leaning ov the ropes which inclose the space reserv for match play, were eager to catch the changing positions, and frequently retired to reproduce and discuss them over as board. On Wednesday night Mr. Wrig! achieved an easy victory over Mr. F.
