Mr. Proctor of Washingten opened the services, and a suc- | cessful mecting was conducted. It will be continued for two wecks, a new speaker being in attendance each night. Anacostia has a new postmaster. The Star representative was the first person to notify Mr. J. W. Tolson of his appointment to the position Seturday abont noon, Mr. olson was very much surprised, but when uced to -belicve that It was an actual soon commenced to thank taose who had’ worked in his behalf. Regarding free delivery in Anacostia, Mr.-Tolson sald he would do all he could to have free delivery at as early a date as possible: The ques- tion has been long before the department and they are not reluctant to gratify Ana- costia's citizens, but just at present it is a lack of funds which causes them to delay. The new post office wlil be located at Jack- son and Monroe streets, and on the site of the recently opened lumber yard conducted by the new postmaster. Mr. George F. Pyles, the Tepubliean appointee to the po- sition, sald this morning that he had had his term and was pleased to see that the new office would be so centrally located. Already the eftizens are getting ready for @ vigorous fight for free delivery. The new postmaster will provide every facility for the handling of the mail by carriers,and there 1s an assurance that the near future will record free delivery for Anacostia. HYATTSV Barnes Compton, jr., has recovered from the injures he received at the recent foot ball match at the Maryland Agricultural College, and has resumed his studies at that institution. Chief Judg+ Briscoe of the seventh judi- cial circuit of Maryland has moved into the residence of Mr. Johnsen, on Wine avenue, with his family. A White Cross League will be shortly organized in this village. The Hyattsville Progressive Euchre Club recently met at the residence of Mrs. J. C. Robinson and organized for the coming winter. A colored boy named William Snow, who resides near Brightseat, fell from his horse a few days since and broke his leg. A farce comedy, entitled “The Peake Sis- ters," will be presented at the next meet- ing of the Episcopal Guild, which will be held at the residence of Miss Mary Wells on Thursday night. Dr. J. R. Owens has gone to Anne Arun- del county to remain until after the elec- tion. The doctor thinks that the demo- cratic candidate for Congress will carry the county by between 500 and 600 majority. Mr. H. N. Crutchett and family have re- moved to Washington for the winter. Mrs. Charles H. Welsh left for Woodville this morning to visit friends. a BROOKLAND. The funeral services of Madam Delarue, mother of Miss Leonide Delarue, were par- ticularly solemn and impressive. Bishop Keane conducted the high mass, assisted by other dignitaries of the Catholic University. Miss May Garner is the guest of Mrs. Wilford Robbins. At St. Clement's P. E. Mission the serv- ices appropriate to All Saints’ day were observed yesterday, and the floral decora- tions were of pure white and green. The Queenstown B. Y. P. U. meeting last evening was led very gracefully by Miss Nellie Middlekauff, who, after a few in- troductory hymns and remarks, resigned the consideration of the subject for the evening in favor of Miss Elizabeth Horner, @ graduate of the Baptist Missionary Train- ing School of Chicago, who held the closest attention of the audience, while she in a quaint and attractive manner explained the object of thé training school and the work its graduates were trying to do. Miss Horner aroused much enthusiasm in her subject among the members of the union. ———- FOREST GLEN. Mrs. M. A. Keys has returned to her home at Edgewood after a four months’ visit to relatives in Boston. . Jessie, the twin daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Prosise, died last Thursday. Mrs. C. I. Manning and family, who have been residing here for the past two years, have removed to Washington and are now located at 1931 15th street northwest. Mrs. Rufus Gartrell is convalescing from a recent severe spell of illness. Mr. Henry W. Olds, who has been resid- ing at Woodside for some time, has had erected a handsome cottage, into which he moved with his family last week. Messrs. Wolfe and Miller are making ex- tensive improvements to their store at Linden by removing partitions and en- larging space. The young ladies of the National Park Seminary give a fancy dress Halloween — at the seminary on Wednesday even- Ing. Hinde of Pinkerton’s detective force arrived at Fredericksburg, Va, Saturday from Cincinnati. He says Morganfield’s leg is very badly broken and that he will not be able to be moved for some five or six weeks. Capt. Hinde bought for Searcey, the Aquia ereek train robber, in custody at Fredericksburg, a new suit of clothes and took away his old ones. Morganfield will not be on hand on the 2tst, when court meets, but will be indicted. There will be several indictments against the two men. Capt. Hinde left in the evening for Wash- ington. The professor has started on his re- turn to Germany. The Empire Music Hall in London re- opened Saturday evening, but the bars in the auditorium were closed. A large crowd was present and the sight of the barriers caused great indignation among certain of the spectators. A crowd attacked the bar- riers, which were soon torn down and broken into bits. Amid the uproar there conld be heard eries and yells of “Down with Ormiston Chant. Long live the Em- pire.” Mrs. Ormiston Chant was the prin- cipal leader of the crusade against the Em- ire. - POA bomb exploded last night outside a house in Tilney street, Park Lane, London, two doors from the residence of Sir Henry Hawkins, one of the justices of the queen’s bench division of her majesty’s high court of justice. The front of the house was much damagéd and the windows of nouses on the opposite side of the street were smashed. The explosion occurred shortly after 11 o'clock. The house was occupied, but nobody was hurt. The wharf of the West India and Domin- fon Steamship Company, 70 feet front on the river, the shets and houses, 4.200 bales of cotton and other freight awaiting ship- ment at New Orleans were burned yester- day, the total loss being $165,000.
