Good Hope was dhe scene of the trouble, and as a result John Henry Burrell, Ed- ward Blackwell and Willlam Jones, all col- ored, appeared in the Police Court today. Jones and Burrell were charged with as- sault and Blackwell with carrying con- cealed weapons. From the testimony of the prisoners in the station house it appears that on Halloween night Jones distributed freely-upon Burrell’s person a large quan- tity of flour. Burrell alleges that Jones used a knife on him, and Jones charges that fol- lowing this Burrell shot at him with a pis- tol, which he got fram Blackwell. The shot, instead of hitting Jones, passed through the coat of a colored boy named Taylor. ‘There has been reported to the police sta- tion the destitute cendition of a family on Sumner avenue, the father being {li in_ bed, and consequently unable to work, and his whfe being also ill. Six small children con- stitute the remainder of the family. Yesterday afternoon a policeman in the eighth precinct arrested a man and locked him up on charge of a suspicious character. A quemtity of clothing was found in his possession, and word was sent to Anacostia to inquire if any stores in the towr had been robbed. While the police were investigating word was received that the man, who gave his name as Henry Lane, had confessed to having robbed a small store near the railroad track in the vicinity of Benning. Officer Boland has commenced a further investigation. ‘There was an enthusiastic meeting of mis- sionary workers last night at the Metho- dist Church. Mrs. J, McKendree Riley was present, accompanied by Miss Day, a re- turned missionary from Moradabad, India. Missionary addresses were made, and then the object of the meeting stated. Follow- ing this there was organized an auxiliary of the Woman's Home Missionary Society, with officers as follows: President, Miss Mattie M. Minnix; recording secretary, Mrs. Elizabeta Page, corresponding secretary, Miss Stella Fort, and treasurer, Miss Lou H. Butler. The new organization starts with aboué thirty members. Mr. Jas. Miss Var- ney was formerly a Brookland lady, having resided for some time with her aunt, in the Brooks mansion. Among the pleasant events of Halloween eve was an entertainment by Miss Ruth Marean of a social club composed of the Brookland representatives of the Washing- fhe feature of the even- and much enjoyment was found in this uncanny company. ‘The Brookland Drum Corps are now un- der the instruction of Mr. Johnson of the Marine Band and are making considerable progress in mastering the technicalities of military music. The Misses Small and Miss Jean Dalgleish held an enjoyable reception at thetr home, on the Brentwood road, Wednesday even- ing. The first prize in a “peanut contest was won by Mr. Guy Camp, who was pre- sented with a large rose head of cabbage as a reward of valor. Mrs. Guy Camp won the second prize—a handsome silver spoon, decorated with chrysanthemums and white ribbon. Miss Grace, Thomas became the fortunate possessor of the piece of cake con- taining a beautiful ring. Other projects were tried, and dancing wound up the pleasures of the evening. Among those present were Mr. and Mrs. Camp, the Miss- es Eva McDowell, Lottie Fillmore, Mary Marean, Grace Thomas, Mary Burr and Bessie Baldwin, Rev. J. T. Crowe, Dr. Ham- mett, and Messrs.
