10 THE EVENING STAR, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 1, 1894-TWELVE PAGES. GENERAL NEWS NOTES. Mayor Hopkins of Chicago went before the grand jury for the purpose of securing an indictment against Chairman J. R. Tan- ner of the republican central committee. The mayor charges that Tanner circulated campaign literature containing charges that the former had levied blackmail on the vices of the city. Mayor Hopkins declared that he will relentlessly prosecute the re- publican leader for criminal libel. A hot sessiom® followed, resulting in the refusal of the jury to take any action in the matter. Mayor Hopkins then went before a justice of the peace to swear out a warrant for Tanner's arrest. Wholesale murder and express robbery was the motive that inspired the recent train wrecking on the “Soo” road. Two men, charged with the murder of the man who lost his life by their work, were given a preliminary hearing at Merrill, Wis., yes- terday, and were held for trial. One of the prisoners has confessed, and his story de- tails the methods pursued to derail the through Minneapolis-Boston limited near Heafford Junction on the night of October 7. In the crash Fireman Charles Cottrill was instantly killed and Engineer James Dutch was seriously injured. The pian was to cause a wreck that would kill every per- gon on-the train and then rob the safe in the express car, as it was supposed the safe contaimed a large sum of money. The man who confessed is Levitt Hazelton, about twenty»years old, claiming to be a resident of Brainerd, Minn. His companion is Frank Williants, a short, thick-set man,who claims to have relatives and friends at Appleton, Wis. Williams stoutty denies that he knows anything of the wrecking. During Tuesday night two bombs were expl in front of two local police sta- tions at Milan, Italy. The buildings were damaged, but nobody was injured. A jury in the United States court at Tren- ton, N. J., yesterday returned a verdict of $12,000 damages in favor of Geo. Spencer of Murray. Hill, ig his suit against the Dela- ware,Lackawanna and Western railroad, for injuries received in a railroad accident near Hoboken on January 15 last, when several persons were killed and injured. Spencer sued for $50,000. This is the first suit grow- ing out of this accident, many claims hav- ing been mutually adjusted. _The statement was made at New York police headquarters yesterday that the grand jury had found indictments against Police Captain Stephenson and Wardmen Glennon, Burns and Smith upon evidence brought out before the Lexow committee. ‘The specific charge, it is said, is blackmail. ‘The investigation of the police commis- sioner of Chief of Police Rogers of Seattle, Wash., on charges preferred by John Col- ins, proprietor of the Seattle Daily Tele- graph, ended yesterday, and Chief Rogers ‘was exonerated of taking bribes or receiv- ing money from gamblers, but ex-Mayor Harry White was exposed by Gov. John H. McGraw of having resigned to avoid publi- cation of the charges that he owned an in- terest In a gambling game while mayor, and of accepting bribes from gamblers in leu of the police protection, while White himself confessed on the stand that he al- lowed the ordinances to be violated, and fog = should have been impeached then and there. The long deferred trial of Maj. Wham, ymaster in the United States army, has Beta resumed at Vancouver, Wash., after an interval of nearly a month. A serious epidemic, pronounced by the physicians to be ‘continual malarial feve! has broken out among the students of Wes- leyan University, there being at present thirty-five cases there. Eight students have already been sent to their homes, and one case has developed into typhoid fever. ‘The pool rooms reopened at noon yester- day at Covington, Ky. The mayor says the proprietors will be arrested every day that they open. There is a bitter feeling be- tween the Oakley interests and the pool men, and an animated fight is expected. Chas. T. The British steamer Longships, which ar- rived at New York trom the Dutch West Indies yesterday, had a cargo of 12,000,000 pounds of sugar, ‘The issue of California 4 per cent bonds for $600,000, to pay for the new depot build- ing at the ferry landings in San Francisco, was sold to Farson, Leach & Co. of Boston, at 17-8 premium. The act authorizing the bond issue omitted any reference to the kind of-money in which the principal and interest might be paid, and local capitalists kept out of the competition. A rock-drilling contest for the champion- ship of the world and a purse of $325 Is in Progress at Leadville, Col. Seven teams are entered, Leadville, Telluride, Cripple Creek and Red Cliff being represented. Driver and McGilveray, a Leadville team, have already beaten the world’s record of 80 5-16 by drilling 31 1-2 inches in fifteen minutes. Prof. Theodore Mommsen, the eminent German jurist and historian, has been ap- pointed vice chancellor of the order of the Pour Le Merite, for science. The distillers of Baltimore have taken ac- tion to test the constitutionality of that sec- tion of the new tariff law increasing the tax on whisky in bond. Advices received from Port-au-Prince, Haytl, state that a rupture is imminent be- tween Hayt! and San Domingo. An en- gagement is reported to have taken place on October 18 between troops of the two republics near the boundaries. The San Domingo troops, it is said, entered upon Haytian territory and were repulsed. A special dispatch from Rome says that the trial of Merlino, the notorious anarch- ist, has begun in Florence. The charge is that he published articles inciting the peo- ple to revolution. In the United States circuit court at New York yesterday Judge Lacombe handed down an opinion on the petition of the Farmers’ Loan and Trust Company to compel John King and John G. McCullough, receivers of the Erle railroad, to pay the interest on several coupon mortgages that have fallen due, but have been unpaid since the property entered the receivers’ hands. Two robbers while at work in a Polish residence at Mahanoy City, Pa., early yes- terday morning were attacked by two boarders, Jchn Frank and Joseph Breniski. The robbers drew revolvers and commenced firing. Frank was shot through the left breast and mortally wounded. Five anarchists, Jacques Elisee, Reclus Poete, Martin, Duprat and Pouget, were yesterday, at Paris, sentenced, in their ab- sence, to twenty years’ imprisonment. They were found guilty of belonging to a crim- inal association. John R. Englebert, a civil engineer, was shot in mistake for a “white cap” by a boy whom he was trying to frighten, at Rife, Dauphin county, Pa., Tuesday night ‘The work of unearthing the skeleton of @ mastodon, recently discovered in a bog on the farm of George W. Swayne, near Shirleysburg, Pa., is progressing as rapid! as the dangerous condition of the soil will permit. An Official examination shows that the Parthenon at Athens was seriously cam- aged by the earthquakes that occurred last spring. The structure is reported to be in a dangerous condition. The federal grand jury at Baltimore has Gismissed the case against Col. Geo. W. F. Vernon, the pension attorney, charged with accepting $30 from a client, more than the law allows. William Jones and George Buckland, min- ers, were drowned by a rush of water from an old working, while they were cleaning up an old gangway in mines near Nanti- coke, Pa., yesterday. The Union line steamer Wairara) was wrecked Sunday night on Great Barrier Island, off the rortheast coast of New Zea- land. ‘The steamer had a large number of assengers, and one hundred and twelve of em were drowned. Fred. S. Snow, claiming to be from Rhode Island, is missing, as is also a number of articles of jewelry, which he is charged with having stolen from the residence of H. B. Scott of Jacksonville, Fla. Mrs. J. Coleman Drayton, in her reply to her husband’s suit for divorce, makes specific denial to each and every charge in her husband's bill, charging her with adultery with Hallett, also Borrowe, and says that she was never guilty of adultery with Borrowe, or any other person whom- soever, either In New York, London, Ber- nardsville or any other place. The opening of the new music hall at Baltimore iast night was a brilliant occa- sion. The building is the largest of its kind in the south, and was begun three years ago. Two of the oldest and largest financial institutions of Indianapolis have been con- solidated. They are the Meridian National Bank and the Merchants’ National Bank. During the trial of 8S. G. Worden at Woodland, Cal., yesterday, one of the A. R. U. men, charged with wrecking a rail- way bridge timony was given as to a confession by Worden. The hog cholera is raging with fearful fatality in Wisconsin. Hundreds of hogs are dying in a few hours after the disease is noticed. Consul Zeyas, in his report to the Mext- can government, presents claims for an international irrigation agreement between the United States and Mexico, alleging in- discriminate use of the waters of the Rio Grande above El Paso. The matter will doubtless be brought before the State De- partment at Washington very soon. A great fright exists in Guatemala over the report that Mexico {s sending a fleet to blockade Guatemalan ports on the Pa- cific. The government is taking all pos- sible precautions for defense. An aged German farmer named John Kouse was killed by two masked robbers at his residence, one and a half miles east of ns City, Pa., last evening. Geieral Master Workman Sovereign of the K. of L. denies that he and his friends will attempt to disfranchise the Canadian K. of L. in the coming general assembly, as had been reported. Owens, the founder of the Topolabampo colony, being interviewed at Mexico, said the dispatches from Abliene announcing the failure of the Topolabampo colony were the purest fakes sent out by parties who were hostile to the company. The Berlin Lokal Anzeiger sxys that Dr. Miquel, Prussian minister of finance, has been appointed imperial vice chancellor to assist Prince von Hohenlohe. ‘Two passenger trains were in collision at the station at Redfern, a suburb of Syd- ney, N. S. W., yesterday. Seven persons, including a Catholic dean, Father McCar- thy, lost their lives in the accident. Capt. Alfred Drefus of the French gen- eral staft, who was attached to the organ- izing and mobilizing department, has been arrested on the charge of treason espionage in behalf of the triple alliance.
