The Henry Athletic Club expects to have some of the best in the profession box under their auspices during the present season, ae Charged Wtih Robbery. Thomas W. Jordan, a colored letter car- rier, is under arrest on the charge of rob- bing the mails, and has been lodged in jail in default of $1,000 bond. Letters were taken from his person, which, he stated to the inspectors, had been put in bis pockets by cther carriers. It 1s charged by those who arrested him that his plan of operation was to abstract a letter from the collec- tions made by other carriers, so that the thefts appeared to have been ccmmitted in various parts of the city. Such letters were selected as seemed to contain money. Jor- dan lives at 981 Florida avenue, is married and has one child. He served in the United States navy for three years, two terms of enlistment in the, army, and entered the service of the city post ‘office through the civil eervice three years ugo. TAKEN BACK TO JAIL Searcey, the Train Robber, Again in @ Ocll. Morganfield Denies Knowledge of the Other—Dispute Over the Sub- ject of Reward. Robert Pinkerton and party, with Charles J. Searcey, one of the Aquia creek train robbers, reached Fredericksburg, Va., yes- terday afternoon at 1 o'clock, having driven back from Calverton. Nothing of special interest happened on the route, Searcey was cheerful, and seemed relieved that the thing was over, though he sald he would not mind prolonging the drive. When he parted with ex-Sheriff Adie he shook hands and asked him to come to see him when he came to Fredericksburg, which Mr. Adie, who 1s a kind-hearted man, promised to do, At the suggestion of the commonwealth’ attorney of Stafford, Judge Ashton of the county court of that county has issued an order adopting the jail of the city of Fred- ericksburg as the place of confinement for Searcey, and there he will stay until the 21st of November, at which time the county court of Stafford will sit and a grand jury find indictments against the train robbers, Nothing has yet been determined about any preliminary hearing before a ~ trate, and nothing can be gathered on that point until after Morganfield has been brought to Fredericksburg. Detective Robert Pinkerton left last night for the north, Just before leaving he said Morganfield’s correct name is Charles Mor- gan, and that he is a professional gambler of Neelyville, Mo. The photograph of him printed in Tle Star from Cincinnati hag been positively identified by Searcey as the man who was his accomplice in the train robbery, Charles A. Morganfield, the broken-legged suspected Aquia creek robber, at Cincinnatl was plied all day yesterday with every de- vice of detective ingenuity to elicit a con- fession. He is mute. “Who the —- — is this crazy fool Searcey?” he exclaime® when told of Searcey’s confession and the recovery of the stolen money. Sheriff Ken- nedy of Virginia and Capt. Hinde, the Pink- erton man, supported by the Cincinnati detective force, could get nothing more out of him. He positively denies that he is the Missouri! gambler, Jim Morgan. In the application for a requisition for Morganfield Assistant Superintendent Her- ring of the Adams Express Company makes affidavit that the amount stolen was over $20,000, President L. C, Weir of the Adams Ex- press Company was seen yesterday at New York and questioned regarding the recovery President Weir said: “We have not opened the bag yet, and, of course, I do not know what it contains. But I can tell you now what it should contain. The contents In- clude some bills of lading for cotton and several thousand dollars’ worth of railroad receivers’ certificates. Of course, the loss on this would be very small, but would cause considerable trouble to our customers and ourselves in replacing them. We have now recovered everything.” In an interview Mr. Pinkerton said: “Searcey, to the best of my knowledge and belief, has never before been connected with a train robbery. He is well up in Masonry and the Knights of Pythias, and evidently at one time stood well. His confession weg due to papers found on him that would have convicted him. His implication of Morganfield was willingly given, the entire confession having been made in Washing- ton last Sunday. “Morgantield’s right name is Charles Morgan, and he is from Neelysville, Mo., where he followed gambling for a living, and was no doubt the promoter of the ‘hold up.” ‘Morzan,” continued he, “is the right man; for, besides certain papers found on him, I have since my arrival here secured his picture, which Searcey recognized.” Referring to the pouch, Mr. Pinkerton said he did not know the amount of the con- tents or value, for it was shipped to Wash- ington. He, however, knew that it con- tained all, with the exception of about $2,960. This amount the robbers kept, the larger portion of it, however, being re- covered. Officials Here Reticent. The express officlals here profess to be ecmpletely ignorant of what the contents of the stolen pouch are as well as of any further developments in the case. General Managcr Herring left the city this after- noon for New York. He was uncommuni- cative, as usual, regarding the matter in which he is most deeply interested just now. There is no doubt that he believes that the two men now under arrest had com- panions in their crime, and that he is direct- ing all the efforts of his agents toward their discovery. The one legged man who is known to have been in Morganfleld’s company prior to his accident and arrest is being looked for in several directions by the Pinkertons and express detectives, and several people in Fredericksburg and this city are under close surveillance. There will probably be a bitter struggle for the possession of the $2,000 reward of- fered by Gov. O’Ferrall and President Myers of the Richmond, Fredericksburg and Potomac Railroad Company. The of- ficers at Cumberland who arrested Searcey and those in Cincinnati who caught Mor- ganfield will resist the efforts of any one else who may try to secure any portion of the prize money, while Detective Pinker- ton will also claim it on account of having procured the confession from Searcey and recovered the pouch and its valuable con- tents. It is probable that the case will be closed so far as the public interest in it is concerned in another day or two. —_——_—. The Tall Hat Grievance. To the Editor of The Evening Star: The agitation in the press of every public grievance is the most effective means to- ward reform, as your paper continually proves. The tall hat institution has risen literally to the height of a grave public nuisance, Not alone in theaters, but in lec- ture halls, churches, concerts and in all assemblies, people who have a right to see are debarred from seeing by this obtrusive fashion. At a recent Geographical Society lecture I was unable to get a view of the speaker because of two towering head- dresses obstructing my line of visiou. This prevented, to a degree, hearing as well as seeing, as’ the lecturer was gifted with a very low voice, and experience proves that a speaker unseen is only half heard. Your correspondent who denounces the la- dies for not removing their hats in assem- blies {s (as they say in the west) * up the wrong tree.” The fact is, towering monstrosities require so many fastenings that the wearers can’t remove them and resume them without time and trouble, The cure lies lower down. Let a modest, sensivle, low-crowned head dress, like that generally worn not long ago, be worn in all public assemblies, and we should hear no more of the tall hat nuisance. They might be kept for driving out, shopping, &c., in places where the flamboyaat Style would invade nobody's right to see; or, bet ter still, let lovely woman topple down the whole fortification as a disfigurement, in- stead of an ornament. It will come to that sooner or later, and every man, well as most women, will devoutly pray that it may be sooner, SPECTATOR. — Republicans at Glen Echo. ‘The republicans of Montgomery county are holding a lively series of meetings throughout the county in the interests of Mr. Wellington for Congress.
