In 1892 the total registered vote was 10,183, show- ing a gain this year of over 500. The re- publicans are elated over this, claiming that a large majority of the gain is that of voters of their party. Mr. J. G. Hess, a leading populist of this city, is of the opin- lon that his party will poll 500 of the total vote of the county. The democrats, on the other hand, are making no claims, but are paying some attention ot the “still hunt” order to the new vote. A committee of the association, consisting of the Rev: Osborne Ingle and the Rev. G. C. H. Hankarl, appointed to Inquire into the subject of state aid to de- nominational schools, has submitted a re- port in which is embodied a series of ques- tions touching on this subject, which each of the candidates in the sixth congressional district will be asked to answer. They embody three propositions, as to whether the candidates, as law makers, wouid vote to protect the public schools from any and all cssaults, to prohibit the appropriation of public funds to denominational schools and private institutions, and to cause a rigid restriction of immigration. It is thought here that this manifesto of the preachers’ has been issued too late in the campaign to be of any effect and that the candidates will ignore it on the ground of its attempting to ensnarl them in a con- troversy not properly constituting one of the issues of the campaign. The Frederick County Floricultural So- ciety has decided to hold its annual flower show in the Rink building here on the 7th, Sth and 9th of November. C. F. Hale of Washington will be the judge, and it is thought that the exhibits of chrysanthe- mums will number over a thousand. The Frederick flower show is one of the largest in_the country. Cissie Ridenbaugh, a young woman of Brunswick, this county, was adjudged In- sane by a jury de lunatica inquirendo at the court house here Wednesday, and by the court committed to Montevue’ Hospital for treatment. Political meetings will be held in this county every night until the election by both parties, a number of prohibition meet- ings also being booked. John K. Cowen is announced to speak here on Novembef 3. Mrs. Wm. T. Haller and son of Wash- ington are visiting relatives here. Mrs. H. A. Kauffman has returned to Washington after a visit here. > Portugal the First to Agree. Portugal has accepted the invitation of the United States and has signified her ad- herence to the agreement arranged by the Paris arbitration for the protection of the seals in the North Pacific ocean and Bering sea. About two months ago the State De- partment sent out an identic note to all of the maritime powers save Great Britain, which was already included, inviting them to join in this agreement. These were duly acknowledged by all of the recipients, and the first nation to accept was Portugal, which thereby binds herself to forbid her subjects to enter the closed zones in pursuit of seal. This is the only response so far re- ceived. AUCTION SALES. FUTURE DAYS. THOS. DOWLING & CO.
