The fact remains, nowever may be the matter of the style of the building, that there are Signa of Life on the site, such as have not been seen since the halcyon days of Albert Gleason, who threw so many laborers into the work of excavating the ground that they were in each other's way at times. It is altogether ridiculous to suppose that a good business man would not double, triple or even quadruple the num- ber of men employed on the work if he were bound by such an obligation, and so the fallacy of the calculation is shown at once. The caps for the great columns at the main entrance still absorh the attention of the stone setters. There was a gang of thirteen men there this morning, and the brick work had been begun at the west side of the entrance, where it was left unfinished in order to the capital on that side. ‘There ts a small shed being erected on the east wall frame, for the accommodation of the bricklayers, and that work will proba- bly be started in earnest in a few days. > War Against Saloo: ‘The Ant ent in the sum of $11 He is to receive credit, “ th interest. w left him by the wili of | however, for Samuel Norn —_—_ Counter Charges. wer was filed late yesterday after- Lydia Gordon to the amend- er husband, Fulton R. Adve. ing number, styled a divertimento, by Bach, which wes the arrangement of a number of themes that composer, orchestrated on Wagnerilan lines, was interesting in show- ing Seidl's command of the resources of an orchestra, and it was well received. The only work of the orchestra, however, that excited enthusiasm was its performance of Dvorak’s symphony from the “New World,” which was given in this city for the first time. The familiar ballads and uegro melo- dies, which suggested the original themes for the composer, could be readily traced, and the preservation of their characteristics and their treatment were masterly and wonderfully effective. It 1s to be hoped that Mr. Siedl will repeat this symphony at @ subsequent concert, for it is a work that marks an era in musical composition in this country and should be heard by every lover of melody and its artistic treatment in symphonic form, Miss Lillian Biauvelt sang the mad scene from Ambroise Thomas’ “Hamlet” in ex- cellent style, the quality of her voice, its flexibility and her artistic method enabling her to interpret the bravura aria in the most attractive manner. Miss Blauvelt is nol a great singer, but she is an extremely satisfying one, as was testifled by the con- tinued applause which she received last night, and which would not down until she reappeared and sang the well-known bolero from the “Sicilian Vespers.” The local interest last night centered in the performance of Miss Lotta Mills, a young Washington planist, who has but recently returned from three years’ study in Europe, under the famous Lechitiszky, the teacher of Padereweski. Miss Mills is extremely youthful in appearance, and as she came forward and seated herself at the piano there were many who wondered if she would be able to cope with the difficul- tues of the Schumann concerto, which she had selected for her initial concert per- formance. This is one of the most trying compositions for a pianist, but her opening chords showed that she had no fear of the result, and throughout her playing’ was matked by an intelligence of conception and a vigor of execution that called for only the warmest praise. Her touch is delicate, yet firm, and her tonal enunciation is clear, distinct and accurate. To a technique fin- ished and artistic in the highest degree she adds a vigor and brilliancy that are virile in their effect. She has the true artistic temperament, and is thoroughly absorbed in her work, her feelings and thoughts find- ing prompt and adequate expression {n her playing, and she has that magnetic quality that carrics her audience with her and sways them to her own mood. Washing- ton has reason to be proud of Miss Mills and will always be interested in the bril- liant future that awaits her. Her reception was enthusiastic and she was recalled again and again ta bow her acknowledgments, and finally was obliged to respond to the earnest demands of the audience for more, playing Mendelssohn’s “On the Wings of Song” with great delicacy of expression and feeling. New National Theater.—From a physical standpoint Miss Ada Rehan !s an ideal Katherine in “The Taming of the Shrew,” the play presented by her company at the National last night. Her mental conception of the character is no less remarkable, and the result is a perfect portrayal of one of the strongest of Shakespeare's female characters. Miss Rehan succeeds tn bring- ing out the lights and shadows in the char- acter of Katherine in a thoroughly ar- tistic manner, and the easy gradations from the tigerish shrew to the gentle, lov- ing woman, are a revelation to lovers of Shakespeare. who have been sometimes amused by the sudden conversion of Kath- erine as presented by many actresses. jeorge Clarke is an entirely acceptable Petruchio, and it ts too bad that the same cannot be said of the rest of the cast, which taken as a whole can only be classed as passable. Playgoers have beccme so ac- custerned to see Miss Rehan surrounded by an entirely well-balanced company that it was somewhat of a shock last night to witness the burlesque jester work of the young man who attempted the part of serv- ant to the young lover of Bianca. Albangh’s.—Last night Mr. Mantell pre- sented at Albaugh’s the romantic drama of “The Corsican Brothers” to a good au- dience, and with that completeness that characterizes all of Mr. Mantell’s produc- tions. In the dual part of the two brothers, Mr. Mantell is seen to excellent advanta: and bis support was adequa Tonight Mr. Martell will present, for the-first time in this city, his new play, ‘“Parrbasius,” in which he is said to have a part that fs pe- culierly adapted to his abilities. Marie Jansen.—On next Monday evening the theater-goers of this city will Fave an opportunity to see Marie Jansen, one of the mos: popular and charming comedy artists on the stage. She has a new play this sea- son called “Miss Dynamite.” Like all of Glen MacDonough’s comedies, it fs of a high order. It appeals to the best tastes. The lines are bright, the wit is keen and the humor genuine, and it furnishes real en- joyment to people who appreciate delicacy ath. Miss Jansen is a star, who, undec ry circumstances, might overshadow her ccmpany; but in this instance she 1s surrounded by a coterie, including Frederic Bond and other well-known players, which would claim notice under any circumstances, In compliment to Mr. Bond, who fs an as sociate member of the Press Club, that or- ganization has been invited to attend the Ing performance in a body on Monday Boston Symphony Orchestra,—The firet concert of the Boston Symphony series will take place next Tuesday evening at Metz- €rott Music Hall. This organization comes this season in even better form than ever, and its great popularity is fully attested by the large sale of season tickets already made. Only those have as yet been placed on sale, and already the greater portion of the house is reserved. The program for this concert is unusually attractive. The soloists will be Mrs. Julie W. Wyman, who comes fresh from a series of European successes, and Mr. T. Adamowski, whose ability as a violinist is well known here, Kernan's Lyceum Theater.—Manager Ker- ran’s attraction for next week will be Rice and Barton’s Comedians. These clever peo- ple will introduce for the first time in this city their musical success, entitled “Mc- Doodle and Poodle,” which introduces many pretty girls, tableaux, catchy music, dances, marches, living statues, gorgeous scenery and beautiful costumes, also a number of high-class a artists.
