The council, which is democratic, refuses to confirm the appoint- rents of the mayor, republican, who con- tends the collectorship is vacant by virtue of expiration of the term of J. H. Should he attempt to do this legal complications will arise which will have to be settled by the court. The last meeting of the mayor and council was a stormy one, the mayor refusing to put a motion made by Councilman Rowland, authorizing Mid- dickauff to collect the taxes, or for the ap- proval of his bond. Sharpsbu: and Hancock districts have been visit within the past few days by cloudbursts. In each instance the rain, which was accompanied by furious wind, fell like a cataract. A fearful clectrical storm that passed over this city Monday afternoon between 5 and 6 o'clock left a train of casualties in its wake, one of them fatal. The victim was Thomas Addison Berry, a brfkemarp em- ployed on the Baltimore and Ohio railroad at Brunswick. The talk at present prevalent anent the large salaries being derived by virtue of the fee system in the cases of certain coun- ty officials and the advocacy of an over- hauling of the system calls to mind a good story told on Mr. Robert H.
