Witcher’s Wil peding Herd o | From the Chicago Herald. Capt. Russell is one of the Black Hills pioneers, and in the country where he Is known no man would think of sneering at what he said. In a general talk he related many singular occurrences, but none like the ride of N. L. Witcher of Sturgis, 8. Dak., which Witcher had on the back of a buffalo in 1849. Here it is, minus, of course, the interesting manner which Capt. Russell im- parted to it: “It was in the summer of 1849. A lot of Californians were in camp on the North Platte in the vicinity of Chimney rock, which is a landmark now of former times. The Californians concluded they would like some buffalo steak out of a herd they saw graz- ing in the distance. It was no uncommon sight in those days. But you won't see it any more. No more buffalo, and never will be again. Somebody thought different once, but there won't be any more buffalo. The one of the herd. Witcher took the north side of the herd and his friends came up on | the south and west sides. That stampeded | the herd, for the boys had fired on the buf- falo. “They took a header toward Witcher, who was on horseback. He saw them comin: and he knew they wouldn't turn aside fc him. He had seen them run before. In spite of the speed of his horse he was soon overtaken. He saw the herd gaining on him and he began thinking. He had been in many an Indian skirmish, and I reckon a man has to think as quickly in a time like that as he ever does in this life. had his mind made up what to do by the time he was overtaken, provided he wasn’t trampled to death before he could do it. “The foremost of the herd, an old bull, came upon him and gored his horse to death almost instantly. Witcher was an athiete and as quick as a cat. He leaped upon the back of the buffalo and grasped his shaggy mane with both hands. That only acceler- Witcher re- alized that he had saved himself for the But he heard the snorting, bei infuriated stampede behind him. His animal might be run down, or he might | lose his grip and fall, to be trampled under hundreds of feet at any moment. Pande- monium on foot was gaining on him. He had to do some more quick thinking. He knew his only solution was for his buffalo posing back to the rear. And this is how he aid it: “He had a long knife, such as the forty- niners carried in those days. He managed to get it out, and, hanging on for life with one hand, he reached with his knife one side of the neck of the buffalo and slashed into it. The animal leaped like a maddened devil at the thrust, and Witcher held on like a tick on a country dog. Quicker than it takes to | tell it he changed the knife to the other hand and made a slit on the other side of the animal's neck. The blood spurted from both sides and stained the ground over which Witcher was going at a rate that was too much for his comfort. But very soon the animal commenced to weaken. jowly he began to fail back, and finally all the others had passed him in the race in which he had had the sendoff. The animal fell and Witcher jumped from the back of the buffalo which had saved his life. Under 7 umstances to have killed that which had saved him would not have been lke Witcher. But this was a case where {t admitted of no sorrow. A man would kill a — buffalo in those days to save his own re.” oe The Most of Tt. From the Detroit (Mich.) Tribune. They had wandered far from the merry bathers, and in the shade of a beetling crag, where the rippling waves spoke in soft unison with their thoughts, they paused “My darling,” he whispered, “I trust our engagement will be short.” She looked into his face with a puzzled cok in her great, gray eyes. “Of course—" (Her every word burned into his soul) you don’t imagine I can afford to pay } $10 a day at that hotel and fool with long engagements, do you?” Then it dawned upon him that the heart | of the fin de siecle woman was fearfully and wonderfully made, and that the man who understood it was just about a dandy. coe A New Use for.a Syringe. From Pearson's Weekly. Mr. Angler—“It sometimes occurs that in trout fishing particularly all the known arts of the piscator will fail to allure the wary game, and once I remember having to try a very unsportsmanlike recourse. Mr. Listener—“Yes? What was that?” Mr. Angler—“I was fishing one day in the Sprain brook and discovered In an old pocl @ trout that must have weighed seven pounds. I tempted him first with all the artificial bait at my command, from gray hackle to flamingo Mies, shook @ button off my flannel shirt into his eyes, offered him a strawberry on a hook and a forelock of my red hair, flirted all the known brands of worms in front of his suggestive mouth and wasted all my lunch on him in the way of decoy, and when I was just about to give it up in despair a thought struck me. “Acting upon it, I went to a neighboring farm house, borrowed a two-quart syringe used for the demolition of insect pests, walked back and drew all the water out of the pool, and, walking into the exhausted reservoir, picked up my seven-pound speck- Jed trout.” Witcher | HIS DEATH SUDDEN Ex-Senator Perkins Passes Away at His Home Here. The Distinguished Carcer of the Deaé Man — Judge, Congressman and Senator—Apoplesy the Cause. Ex-Senator and ex-Congressman Bishop W. Perkins of Kansas died yesterday af- ternoon at 1815 16th street from apoplexy. He had been suffering for a couple of days with dysentery, but his physicians, Dr. Chas. W. Brown and G. M. Brumbaugh, did not regard his conditon as serious when they saw him Tuesday night. Early yes- terday morning it was discovered that the sick man had grown rapidly worse, and when Dr. Brown was called about 9 o'clock he found that his patient had relapsed into a state of coma. He rallied under the in- fluence of stimulants, but shortly before noon sank into a deep sleep, and despite the efforts of his physician and Drs. Balloch and Sowers, who were also called in, he died, without regaining consciousness, at 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon. The dead man was in his fifty-first year and was born in Rochester, Ohio. From early youth his life was unusually active, and its use- fulness was as marked as its energy and vigor. He removed to Milinois at a tender ge and received his final education at Knox Academy in Galesburg. He after- ward read law and was admitted to the bar at Ottawa, Ill.
