Mrs. Sartoris Says It is Not So—Recent Personals. _—_ A number of Washingtonians were pres- ent yesterday at the marriage of Miss Ann Page, only daughter of Dr. and Mrs. C. Shirley Carter of Morven Park, near Lees- burg, and a granddaughter of the late Gov. | ‘Thomas Swann of Maryland, and Dr. J. Sheafl Stewart of Philadelphia. The ceremony took place in St. James’ Epigeopal Chureh, Leesburg. ‘he ushers were Messrs. John Elton of New York, John Gregg of Harrisburg, J. DuBose Fur- guson of Washington, G. M. Chichester, ‘T. The bridesmaids were Misses Elizabeth Baker of Wash- ington, Sarah Sherrard of Philadelphia, Henrietta ‘Tiighman of Baltimore, Evelyn Buckner of Baltimore, Sophie Brogden and May Chichester of Loudoun. Just behind these came the maid of honor, Miss Mary Brogden, and thien the young bride, on the arm of her father. Preceding the bridal party were two little children, Miss Klien Griffith of Washington, and Master Wm. Byrd Page Carter, brother of the bride, beth attired in pure white, ‘The bride was gowned in a rich peari- white satin, and trimmed with a profusion Of rare old lace. Her vell was caught with orange blossoms, and she carried a bunch of bride roses. The maid of honor wore white organdie over rose-colored silk. The biiier maids wore white organdie over apple-green silk, and their white hats were trimmed with greeh ribbons and white roses. They car- ried instead of the orthodox bonunets ~ daintiest of parasols in Dresden design stripped with bands of green silk. These were the gifts of the eal a tn: The groom presented his ushers scart pins of emeralds and diamonds. The best man was a brother of the groom, Mr. Mur- ray Stewart. Rev. in Green, rector of StJames’ Church, performed the ceremony. Imme- diately after the ceremony the bridal party drove to Morven Park, the stately home of Dr. Carter, and partook of a wedding break- fast. At 4 o'clock the young couple left for an extended tour. Upon their return they will make their home for the present at Morven Park. The groom is a graduate of the Medical School of the University of Vir- ginia, and ts now surgeon in the marine hospital service of the United States, and is located in Washington. Among the guests present from a distance were Capt. Wm. Page Carter of Clarke, Mr. and Mrs. John A. Baker, Gen. and Mrs. Watmough, Dr. and Mrs. Griffith of Wash- ington, Miss Sturt of England, Lieutenant Commander Rush, United States navy, from Washington. Mrs. Nellie Grant Sartoris, as was inti- rated in this column, is not engaged to Gen. H. Kyd Douglas or to anybody else. So she says herself and so say several mem- bers of her family, as well as the gallant southerner himself, who {s naturally very sorry that the truth must be admitted. Mrs. Sartoris is now in New York with her moth- er, visiting Col. and Mrs. Fred Grant, She wants to spend the early summer in a quiet place until the arrival of her son Algernon from Englard, and then show him some of the summer life gt various fashion- able resorts later on. Mrs. Grant has taken a cottage at Narragansett. There is no doubt about that, for several friends here | BERR’ have received invitations from her to visit her during the next two months. It has also transpired that Mrs. Sartoris, previous to her departure from this city, gave author- ity to some friends to deny the rumor of her engagement, which was then in circu- lation. Count and Countess de Mitkiewicz, who were married Monday night in Baltimore, went yesterday morning to visit the lat- ter’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Small, at Mel- v M4. The latter knew nothing of their intention to marry until they re- letter telling them the deed was done, but they have accepted the situation gracefully and smiled on the couple when they mrde their appearnce yesterday. After this dutiful act, the count and his wife took the 1 o'clock train for Washing- ton, where they will make their e at No. 2217 Washington circle, where they are surrour ded by six children, the eldest, a daughter, being the sare age as her new stepmother. Sir Julian Pauncefote will go abroad to = his family early in July. The Misses uncefote were presented to the queen at the last drawing room. The family will travel on the conrinent during the summer. Mrs. Jeremiah Wilson has gone to Oak- land for the summer, where she has a charming home. Mrp. Harriet Lane Johnston and her niece, Miss Kennedy, will summer at Charlestown, W. Va. Mr. and Mre. L. Z. Leiter and family sailed for Europe yesterday. The lights are splendidly arra: ) and the picture shines like a jewel. e view will continue the rest of the week, from 10 to 6. The ob- ject of the exhibition is the establishment of @ free kindergarten and training school in Jackson alley. Miss Bertie Sprague Batley and Mr. Paul Vernon Bunn were married at noon yester- Gay at the First Presbyterian Church, the Rev. Dr. Byron Sunderland officiating. The bride was given away by her father, Mr. Milo V. Batley. She was attired in a gown of white bengaline, and carried a bouquet of white carnations. Her sister, Miss Irene Bailey, was maid of honor, and wore white organdie, carrying pink carnations. The best man was Dr. Sterling Ruffin, and the ushers were Messrs. Melville D. Hensey, Wallace Stansell, Charlies B. Dodson of Richmond, Va., and William I. Washburn. Miss Jennie Giennan presided at the organ. After the ceremony Mr. and Mrs. Bunn left for Canada. They will travel down e Ontario and the St. Lawrence, and will then spend some time at Lake George. The Home Social Club held a regular meeting at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. H. G, Bergling, 1219 6th street northwest, last Tuesday evening, and the following officers were elected for the ensuing six months: President, E. K. Anderson; vice president, Mrs. M. M. Rouger; second vice president, Miss Minnie. Brower; secretary, Miss C. R. Nelson; financial secretary, Mr. Cc. G. Harrison; treasurer, Mr. M. M. K. Decker;audit- ing committee, C. Harrison, George Kenny and Miss Minnie Brower. The guests were pleasantly entertained with music and cards, and after a delightful supper the club adjourned. The next meet- ing will be held at the residence of Mr. J. A. Augusterfer, Langdon, Md. —_——_— AN ENJOYABLE MUSICALE. The first recital by the pupils of Miss Carrie V. Kidwell was given last night at the E Street Baptist Church, which was Not large enough to contain all the friends who had been invited to enjoy the occasion. On the prettily decorated platform were seated about twenty-five of the pupils, pre- senting a most pleasing effect. The pro- gram opened with a chorus number, “O Holy Father, Hear Us,” followed by De Koven's song, “Only in Dreams,” by Miss Maud Porter. The features of the evening were Mattel’s “Slumber Song,” by Mrs. 8. H, Evans; Pinsuti’s ballad, “Fly Forth, On, Gentle Dove,” which Miss Mattie Wade sang by request; Gounod’s aria, “Le Par- late d’Amor,” by Miss Lavinia DeWitt, and @ song of Sala, “‘The River Speeds to the Sea,” by Miss Letitia E. Elliott. Miss Wade also very sweetly sang Nevin's serenade, “Good Night, Beloved,” with mandolin ac- cempaniment by Prof. and Mrs. A. V. Holmes. Aside from the solo numbers, the program was varied by a duet by Miss Kid- well and Mrs. §. H. Evans; a quartet, com- posed of Misses Keene, Lyman, Davis and Keene, and a trio, Miss Kidwell, Miss El- Mott and Mrs. Evans, who sang Abt's “Twi- light.” Miss Kidwell did not appear in any solo part, but her exquisite voice was heard to advantage in the duet and trio numbers. Miss Elliott's song is one never before sung in this country, but a favorite in England. The program was interesting and varied and thoroughly enjoyed by the appreciative avdience, and the young ladies were warm- ly applauded for their creditable perform- auce, THE DEAQLY TROLLEY.
