Isaac Hanks of Rutland, Vt, an aged miser, charged with having caused the death of his wife by denying her suf- ficient food, has been found guilty by the jury in Salem, N. Y., where he was taken for trial. A recommendation of mercy ac- | companied the verdict, and the offender, who ts said to be worth more than $70,000, was let off on a fine of $1,000 and costs. Hanks is seventy years old. 0-2 Prof. Shortlidge’s Case Postponed. Prof. Shortlidge, who killed his wife while insane, was brought to Media, Pa., yester- day, and taken before Judge Claytoa. Wm. B. Broom, counsel for the defense, asked for a postponement of the case until the September term of the court on accoant of the absence of Dr. Laine, an important witness for the defense. The request was granted and the professor was taken back to the asylum. | EB. «11> A NON-PARTISAN TRUST The Sugar Combine Ooutributed to th Party on Top. Mr. Chapman in the Same Fix as the Newspaper Correspondents—Presi- dent Havemeyer’s Testimony. President Havemeyer of the sugar trust continued his testimony before the Senate investigating committee yesterday after- noon, after The Star's report closed. He said that Senator Brice was not a member of last year without refreshing his memory. His recollection was that no contributions were made by him in 1892. Mr. Havemeyer said: “Contributions to local political ganizations have always been made by Pcrations before the trust, and by the and the American Sugar Refining pany, and no doubt will continue to is @ very suitable and proper thing to On the Winning Side. In response to Mr. Allen the witness to explain why contributions should made in New York: “We have large ests In this state; police protection and Protection. They need everything that city furnishes and gives, and they have support these things. sk efits i see call it, does these things, and we do them.” “And you contribute to both parties, with the expectation that whichever party suc- ceeds your interests will be guarded?” asked Senator Allen, “We have # good deal of protection for our contribution,” repled the sugar presi- dent. “it is my impression that wherever there is a dominant party, wherever the majority is very large, that is the that gets the contribution, because that is the party which controls the local matters.” “Then the sugar trust ts a Gemocrat in @ democratic state and @ republican in a re- publican state?” “As far as local matters concerned, think that is about it.” eile : ile would have to look up where contribe- tions went in Pennsylvania and New Jer- sey. He could not give the amount con- tributed by the sugar trust to funds, but in answer to Senator Alien he said it did not amount to $100,000. It had not contributed to the anti-snapper fund. Mr. Allen asked for full data as to all money contributed by the American Sugar Renning Company or any of its officers 0: its account or im its interest im the differ- a of the Union in Isv2 and 1808 for political purposes of any political party, whether nationai, state rd local. The request was granted by the committee, and Mr. Havemeyer asked an opportunity to consult his counsel before furnishing Gata called for, ad Mr. Meyer Examined. Mr. Cord Meyer was also examined, He said his occupation was “executor of his father's last will,” president of the Acme Fertilizing Company, and managing partner of Cord Meyer & Compan; He had no connection with the American Sugar Refin- ing Company, except as a stockholder. The tate Was 4 stockholder. He represented the estate's stockhoiding interest, and had talked with Senators Smith and Murphy, and had told them that the last section did not afford sufficient proteetion to the sugar industry. Mr. Meyer denied having been present at any consultation between mem- bers of the sugar trust and Senators, in the Capitol or anywhere else. During the course of the afternoon the committee filed "its report to the Senate con- cerning the refusal of Mr. Elverton R. man of the firm of Moore & Schiey to an- swer certain questions that had been to him, replies to which were held by the | committee to be material, and under the Jaw the Vice President will certify the fact to the district attorney for action before the grand jury. The report was signed by all the members but Mr. Allen, who subsequently submitted the following minority report: “In addition to the above recommendation of the eom- mittee regarding the witness E. ALLEN.” ——___-e.__ THE PROCESS TRIUMPHED. was the complete triumph of the plate, an@ the demonstration of the value and cability of the Hi larvey process as to plates of this thickness. The plate was curved, representing 300 tons of armor in- tended for the barbettes of the battle ship Massachusettes. It measured 8 by 12 feet, one weighed thirty tons. @ projectiles were of the Carpenter type, which worked such havoc with the eigh- teen-inch plate a few weeks ago. The first shot, with a velocity of 1,410 feet, was smashed without penetrating the plate more than a few inches. The second shot, with the higher velocity of 1,858 feet per likewise broke into fragments without ma- i penetration, but made a fine hair-ling crack, running from the shot hole to the edge of the plate. This satisfied all require- ments, and the lot of plates was accepted, Then the twelve-inch gun was tumed against another seventeen-inch plate, in- tended for the barbettes of the Indiana. This plate was oil-tempered, but not Har- veyized. The two projectiles were given the same velocity and striking energy as in the first test. It was unnecessary to, make the test so severe in order to secure the ac- ceptance of this oll-tempered plate, but the contractors were ambitious to secure @ remium, and requested the same test. Possibly, too, chey were anxious to make @ comparison between similar plates, one Harveyized and the other untreated. Any lingering doubt they may have had on that score was speedily removed, for the first low-speed shot penetrated about nineteen inches and into the backing, while the sec- ond and faster shot went through the sev- enteea-inch pi through thirty-six inches of oak backing, through about six feet of earthwork and out of sight down the river, The lesson of yesterday's test was that the Harvey process is valuable; that it can be applied to thick plates; that the first eighteen-inch plate, which was badly smashed a tew weeks ago, was inherently defective, and that there ts a reasonable hope of pas. the remainder of the eigh- teen-inch plates at the next test, which wi come off soon.
