Tiuddiman, 614 Yath, KNIGHTS TO DRILL re Entrleg Already Made for the Pythian Contests, ———+—__ MORE NAMED THAN EVER BEFORE Encouraging Reports Made by General Carnahan, AT LOCAL HEADQUARTERS ‘There was % goodly batch of mail for Secretary Percy G, Smith to open at Pyth- fan headquarters this morning, and in these missives the committee found much to com- fort and encourage them, Many of the chairmen of the subcommittees dropped in during the day to report as to the lay of land with them, to get information as to the outlook with the other committees and to swap prophecies, Gatherings of these gentlemen are very interesting, from the fact that they are nearly all veteran Pyth- fans ang they have had many experiences which they relate on very slight provoca- tion, When work is slack one of the favor- ite themes is the encampment which was | time. held at Kansas City two years ago, The knights never seem to weary of telling how they did it there. Kansas City is furnishing the model for the local committees, and they hope to eclipse the triumph which Pythianism registered in that hustling western town, They all have so profound a confidence in the ability = Sines chat te people to accomplish great Feel that their hopes are certain of realiza- on, The Competitive Drill. The entries for the competitive drill close on June 1, and it is thought by General Carnahan that the number of bodies of men who will have registered by that date will be more than forty, The list at present is as followss Infantry.— Excelsior division, No. 42, Indiana, Parkersburg division, No. 2,West Virginia, Marion ee > aon. Thus up to date there are over forty entries for the competitive drills, includ- ing infantry companies, infantry battalions and cavalry companies, This is the largest number of entries ever registered for com- petitive drill at any of the biennial en- campments of the Uniform Rank, Knights of fo that even now the Wesh- ington encampment is eclipsing all prior ones, Famous Drill Organizations, Some of the companies in the list have al- ready won their spurs in competition and have a national reputation in so far as the Pythian order 1s concerned, but many @o into the lists for the first time, They are ambitious, they know the price of the victory for which they covet and they go into the contest fully prepared. General Carnahan thinks that the more expe- rienced companies and battalions will find in their younger rivals foemen worthy of their steel. There are several celebra' bodies of Pythian Knights in the state of Ne- braska, and although these have not as yet been heard from it is thought very likely by the Nebraska-Was! that they will be here. Three of the most noted Nebraska commands in this particu- lar are Omaha Division No. 1; Lilly Divi- sion and Black Eagle Division, Information received today at headquar- ters from General Carnahan shows every brigade and probably every regiment of the Uniform Rank will be represented, and the indications say well represented at Washington in August. This is au- thoritative. General Carnahan tells the executive committee that no calculation oan well be made just now as to the num- ber of knights and the followers who will be here, because of the unsettled railroad transportation problem. The majority of the knights not state absolutely that they intend to come until they know how much the luxury of the trip is going to cost. It is also stated officially that the order will not accept a higher rate of fare than that charged during the Grand Army encampment and similar gatherings, Enthusiasm Reported.
