The Anacostia Citizens’ Association will Meet at the substation at 7:30 o'clock to- Morrow evening. Miss Mamie Campbell, daughter of Mr. J. G. Campbell of Prince George’s county, M., was drowned yesterday afternoon 1 Herson branch, a small stream between Fort Foote and Fort Washington. Rev. Hugh T. Stevenson, pastor of the Anacostia Baptist Church, had recently established a mission station at Fort Foote, and had, at the urgent solicitation of Mr. and Mrs. Campbell, gone there to make a general Pastoral call upon the members, with head- quarters at their residence. The family Vehicle was placed at the disposal of Mr. Stevenson, Miss Mamie accompanying him en the round of visits in the capacity of guide. While crossing the swollen stream upon the homeward journey the horse, after entering the water, refused to draw the carriage. Mr. Stevenson got out into the water to the head of the animal, which made a plunge, disengaging itself from the harness, and in the act so entangling Mr. Stevenson as to render him powerless. The vehicle was carried down the stream by the swift current, lodging against a bridge. The body of the unfortunate young lady was afterward recovered clinging to the running gear, three feet below the surface of the water. .Mr. Steverson was rescued by some farm hands, who happened to be in the neighborhood at the time. He reached his home in Anacostia last night about mid- night, and is under the care of a physician this morning, thoroughly unnerved by the distressing catastrophe. A freight train on the Anacostia branch of the Baltimore and Ohio railroad was wrecked at Twining City early Wednesday morning. The cars were heavily loaded with cast-iron sewer pipe, which was smashed to fragments. The accident was caused by a broken axle. The branch being only a single track, all traffic was suspended for the day. —___. HYATTSVILLE. The seventh meeting of the Hyattsville Gastronomic Club was held at “The Cedars,” the residence of Mr. and Mrs. F. J. Gramlich, a few evenings since. The menu was elaborate and tempting to the appetite. The first prize was deservedly czptured by Mrs. Gramlich, for pot-pie, and the “consolation” prize fell to Mrs. Me- cutchen. Thoce present were Capt. and Mrs. Bartlett, Mr. and Mrs. Baukhages, Mr. and Mrs. Jonnson, Dr. and Mrs. Buck, Mr. and Mrs. Gramlich, Mr. and Mrs. Tise, Cc. O. Wells of Amherst, who died about a year ago, was as well known in athletics as was Dohm. His record for a mile run, made on the Berkeley oval about three years ago, of 4 minutes 27 3-5 seconds, stood until a University of Pennsylvania man lowered it four seconds several days ago. Not a few other college athletes who were in the same class with Dohm and Wells have died within a year or two and in each case it has been said that they were weak- ened by overtraining. It is urged in sup- port of this that the men who go in for the long runs and events of that sort ac- quire for a time an abnormal expansion of the lungs. When they stop training, as most of them do after leaving college, there is reaction that leaves the lungs weak and ready for disease. A college man today who goes in for football, the crew or field events is trained more carefully than a race horse. Usually he gives some indica- tion of his athletic possibilities during his freshman year and from that time on he is watched and discussed by every man in college. Success in athletics is usually an open sesame to the best societies and to a certain amount of consideration from the faculty in college work. But to gain this suc- cess he must work harder than a profes- sional athlete. When the trial comes he is spurted to extraordinary efforts by coi- lege spirit and college cheers. When sucha man, who has not inherited weak lungs and who must of necessity have developed his lungs more than the average man, dies of consumption there are not a few people who think that they can ‘trace the effect di- rectly from the cause—overtraining. —_+o+- TEACH CHILDREN TO WORK. Youngsters Should Be Trained to Per- form Small Services. From St. Joseph News, If you want to make a chijd think that it Is of some importance in life, teach it to work as soon as it can understand a re- quest or obey an order, says the Washing- ton Star. Make it understand that {t can look at the magazines on your table, but that it must promise not to tear them and must carefully pile them up just as it found them. This will be a good first lesson be- cause every child likes to look at maga- zines. Work makes a child feel important just as it lifts a man out of the vagabond ranks to give him employment. A very little child will save you many steps if you have but the patience to teach it properly and thus sow the seeds of a future usefulness.
