Colossal Aggregations of Wealth Which Have Few Duplicates in Eng- land. sy a calculation made a year or two ago by an American statistician, rays Cham- bers’ Journal, it seems that seventy citizens of the United States possessed among them an aggregate wealth of $2,700,000,000. That gives an average of about $37,500,000 apiece, To come to particulars: There was one estate—we refrain here from mentioning names—returned as worth no less than $130,000,000, ‘There were five individuals val- Led at $100,000,000; one valued at $70,000,000; two valued at $60,000,000; six valued at 350,000,000; six valued at $40,000,000; four Valued at $55,000,000; thirteen valued et $30,000,000; ten valued at $25,000,000; four Valued at $22,500,000), and fifteen at $20,000,- vou. The brain reels betore such figures. ‘They express measures of wealth which the ordinary mortal is powerless to grasp. Be- sides these seventy colossal fortunes there are fifty other persons in the northern states alone valued at over $10,140,000 each, thirty of them being valued tn all at $450,- 000,000, ‘There were, some litle time ago, published lists of sixty-fhree millionaires in Pennsylvania possessing in the aggre- gate $00,000,000, and of sixty persons in three villages near New York whose wealth aggregated $50,000,000. In Boston fifty families pay taxes on annual incomes of about $1,000,000 each. We have nothing to compare with such individual cases of wealth in Great Britain. Baron Rothschild and Lord Overstone each jeft about $17,500,000; the late Lord Dudley left $20,000,000; the late Duke of Buc- cleuch, estimated to be the richest Seotch- man, left estates valued at $30,000,000. One living English duke is valued at $50,000,000 and another at $40,000,000; but not many names could be added to these to place against the above list of American fortunes. In 1884 there were only 104 persons In the United Kingdom whose incomes from busi- ness profits were returned as over $250,000 @ year. In 1886 there were only seventeen estates which paid probate duty on about $1,250,000 each. see HALLOWED GROUND. A Plebeian Ingrain Pounded Between Marble Fronts. From the Chicago Tribune. In this moving and spring cleaning time | grounds on which carpet can be beaten are quoted high on domestic exchanges and their value is sure to be as far above par as is Yerkes’ street railway stock in parts of the city where houses are thick. It was in one of these parts the other day that one of the “unemployed” who had been hired for the occasion by a family that was wrap- | ping up its penates and other bric-a-brac in burlap, preparatory to a shift in flats, went forth looking for a bit of grass on which to pound an ingrain. In fact it was in the most exclusive section of the North Side. On Astor street the “unemployed” spied a vacant lot. He made for it, and presently his stout three feet of rubber hose which he had nailed to a broom handle was raising a cloud of dust. It floated lazily toward the windows of the two splendid mansions that walled the grass plot in on either side. “Whose carpet are you beating?” was the testy query that was shortly pelted down on the pounder. “Oh, it’s one I've got a job to clean,” he replied with meek indifference. This was too much for the irate questioner. “That land is ours,” she said, with the hauteur of Clara Vere de Vere, “and don't you bring another carpet there to beat.” No, I won't, but I guess I'll finish thie and the rubber hose continued ite on | plebelan thud in the aristocratic street til the carpet had yielded up its dust. Then the “unemployed” took his renovated burden and went back to the stuffy flat. As he dropped the carpet to the floor, he said, in answer to a question as to where he had given it an airing: “Oh, over there on Astor, between a couple of marble fronts.” ewe Her Sister Was Bashfal. From the Boston Herald. It was orly a few days ago that a young man entered the office of the registrar and asked for a license. He had reached his majority, but when he was asked the age of his proposed wife, who, by the way, did not call with him, he appeared to be slight- ly fivstered for a moment, and then replied: “Nineteen. His actions excited the suspicions of the clerk and he refused to grant the license until he had seen the girl. The young man promised to send her in, and then left the office. The next day a young woman bustled into the office and inquired: “What's all this talk about my age?” The clerk inquired the name, and, when he had that information, he explained where the difficulty lay. “Don't I look to be over nineteen?” she sharply inquire. There 5 no denying that. She had left nineteen years behind, if appearances coung- ed for anything, but still the clerk puzziel. Suddenly he asked: “How old is your sister?” ister,” she repeated, growing red. .”” replied the clerk, following up the advantage which he saw he had obtained. “This is not your name. It's your sister's name. You must be over nineteen, but she is not. What do you mean by coming in here and representing yourself In her place?” “Well, I didn’t say she was over rineteen. I asked you if I did not look to be over nineteen,” she said, as she perceived that she was caught in a trap which she had set for the clerk, but which she had sprung for herself. Then she broke down, and ex- plained the entire conspiracy. There was no reason why her sister should not have call- ed, except that the latter was som bashful, and, as the elder sister was not troubled in that way she volunteered to get the license. ————__+e+_—__—_ H.
